Can a 15mm 2.5" SATA fit in an GT780DX or GT70? Either slot?

Trying to figure this out before purchase and don't have the laptop in front of me... thanks!

Don't think anything from that generation was 7mm only, these came with a rubber stopper to hold a smaller drive in but the height of the bay was for a 9mm drive.

 

Yes it will fit but you have to place it in the slot under the touchpad. That's the most roomy place regarding HDDs in these models. A friend of mine is using it in his GT780DX and the GT70 uses the same chassis.
You can see the 2TB WD20NPVX in the HWINFO window. That's 15mm in height.

The big question now is this: can I get away with running my SSD (OS drive) from SATA 1 instead of SATA 0 and would it diminish the performance of the SSD (Samsung 860 Pro) to make SATA 1 the boot port?

 

No support for 15mm, the thickest you can go is 9mm.

Thanks, that's interesting though..felix seems to just have offered proof with his screenshot that 15mm is working in his friend's unit..

 

Most of 15mm are enterprise drives with few exceptions that aren't. Also, there isn't enough clearance for such drive to go in as far as I can recall.

 

When I had my GT60-2OD the best upgrades I did was moving to the 980m and "filling" the notebook with HDD space. The 2TB WD Green I showed in the screenshot I had it in the GT60 along with 2 mSATA in RAID0 and a 3rd 1.75TB HDD in place of the DVD slot. The GT60 required just a little mod to the bottom panel but on the GT780DX it fit like a glove. I then sold the 1.75TB one and gave the WD20NPVX 15mm drive to my friend. Regarding your question, both those slots are SATA 3.0 so no performance degradation

I would advise you to go the 7mm route as the drives are newer and produce less heat and vibrations. Otherwise the 15mm route is viable if installing a 3TB to 5TB one.

Some 1.5TB and up were consumer drives found inside external enclosures. I've had several of them from Toshiba and WD. It fits in the GT780DX without problems. The larger chassis permits it. That notebook is still rocking (I bought it from you guys, Ken gave me a deal ).
