I'm in the market for a new laptop and really like the GS73VR. I'm a little concerned about battery life though.
My question is whether or not I can recharge the laptop via the USB Type-C/Thunderbolt port.
Basically, I'm wondering if i could get away with a smaller power adapter to make it more portable.

Max power output via USB Power Delivery is 100W. That's not nearly enough to power the GS73VR. Type C chargers are more meant for ultrabooks and mobile phones.

It doesn't appear to support charging over TB3. As for battery life - expect about 3 hours.

At one point I saw power draw estimates for this laptop of 30 watts idle and 100 watts for productivity work. All I'm looking to do is extend the battery while on the go. I'd be happy with 60 watts.

Can I ask your source?
The only mention I could find online also falsely stated you couldn't use TB3 to run dual 4k @ 60hz. -

It is not listed on the spec-sheet and manual. Any laptop that supports it has it listed in the manual. -
I searched the manual before posting and you are correct, it doesn't mention it. I didn't take that as any type of confirmation (as you can tell).
I didn't see any warnings in the manual either. I'm curious if there are any brave souls out there who are willing to plug a usb charger into their MSI laptop for science? -

It will probably just sit here - the firmware is likely not configured to recognize it and connect it to the battery. -
USB Power Delivery is a specification which may or may not be implemented for a Type-C connector. Usually if it is implemented, it is explicitly mentioned in the product manual. I also don't see any sense that this is implemented for this model as I already said the max power is 100W and this model draws 180W at load. MSI would not implement a 100W charging just because idle/low usage draws less power.

To add a bit - 100W is the theoretical maximum - in a lot of cases, OEMs cap the total power for one reason or anther. I believe the TB port on my phone is capped at 15W. -

I believe it is - I mean, speeds are higher than a normal USB and it's a type-C connector -
Unlike many traditional gaming notebooks, the MSI Stealth (and Ghost) series are basically ultraportables. They are not designed to sit on a desk plugged in for 6 months at a time. I think it's perfectly reasonable to provide a compact and universal charging solution for those emergency situations on-the-go.
Also, I'd like to add, the computer has a ~0watt power draw while turned off... -
phones only have normal usb-c ports. with usb 3.1 gen 1 or 2 speeds
