UPDATE: I called MSI again and got in touch with someone in tech support. They said that the sticker tearing happens... so they will just inspect the computer before repairing to make sure you didn't make any changes (not even memory or HD swap).
-------------------------------------------
I had to start a new thread about this cause i'm starting to get worried if I should do something.
I received the EX625 from newegg about 2 weeks ago. I love the notebook...
However, not long after I opened it I noticed the "Warranty Sticker - Void if Tampered" was actually already split.
I'm a bit suprised - when I recieved it, everything seem "new" and packaged like I was opening it for the first time. It really seemed unusual... I don't know what a refurb/openbox packaging looks like - but this didn't look like something "used" as i was opening it.
Also, I noticed the cooling fan "rattles" when it runs at certain speeds (when it spins slowly). It's loud enough to hear in a quiet room. Could this have been a laptop that was returned for this reason?
I don't know why some people have said that "its okay" and "MSI will still honor warranty" because I called them and they said they won't.
I did an online chat with a newegg rep and she said that I "shouldn't worry about it" and that if something goes wrong with my laptop, I should get in touch with newegg. Is she full of it, or what?
Should I call newegg and give it hell and tell them to take this laptop back and send me a new one?
-
Hmm agreed, MSI fans do not "rattle" nor do they have there seals broken, in this case i would push towards a new one because you have a rattling fan as well as a broken/tampered seal, also they could turn around and say you void the warrenty, i dont think MSI mind this seal broken (ive seen this so many times and the warrenty has been used) thats for sure. You are allowed to re-apply thermal paste etc and any components that break due to your own error then they wont fix, but the rest of the components they will, in my oppinion these guys have one of the best warrenties around
.
Grab the phone, give new egg a call. -
Give Newegg a call about the fan issue, but don't fret too much over the warranty sticker, it's not Newegg's fault. It's just a flimsy sticker and tears easily, my EX625's sticker was torn out of the box as well, and I got it from Frosty's Computers.
-
In that case, any chance I can fix the rattling myself?
It seems to happen when the fan is spinning just slightly above the lowest level. This happens right when i'm getting into a game... or for while after i just got out of one (it stays on that rattling speed for a couple minutes sometimes). -
My ex625 also came with a warranty sticker that seems to be ripped a bit. I don't even know what to do now..
I don't care about it much except that I heard MSI won't honor the warranty if it's ripped... -
That's weird that 2 people have the same exact problem.
Did you get it from Newegg too? -
I bought my MSi ex625 from Newegg (open box to be exact) and my warranty sticker was not ripped.
-
I hope this thing doesnt break down in the near future.. -
I'm pretty convinced mine isn't a refurb... maybe that sticker did just break.
I think i'm going to just keep it. I think the rattling is from the bottom plastic vibrating on the fan. Maybe if I stick something soft in between there...
But seriously - that sticker was already broken (i didn't touch it). -
Personally I don't think any company should be able to do that when it's a sticker on the _external_ part of the computer case, in a wear area.

GREAT NEWS!
So I called MSI again. The first time, I called customer service and they told me the warranty wasn't going to be honored.
This time, I called and complained that this issue is happening to a lot of people. He forwarded me to tech support...
The Tech support guy said that in these cases, you still ship the laptop to MSI for repair. However, before repairing, they will inspect the laptop inside to make sure you didn't make any modifications (hard drive, memory, soldering, etc...). This confirms what someone else said...
So it looks like i'm gonna have 3 yr warranty after all. I'll modify the original post with the good news.
Looks like the trick was to talk to the right person at MSI. -
Mine came with a slit down the warranty sticker too, and it looked brand spanking new, so I found that rather odd.
So even though the laptop is upgradable, we won't be able to claim warranty on it if we've upgraded the parts? Or just have to swap out the new parts for the original if we want to send it in? -
-
-
more than likely you would probably want to send it to Newegg
-
-
I think you can do both, either way you can upgrade and the warrenty will still be honoured, just not for the upgraded component.
-
-
Oh? what aren't you happy with best?
-
On the other hand its only $1033 CAD, i assume about 700-800 less than the Asus g51 if it releases on newegg.ca -
Hmm true, depends what you want to do really, you will benefit from lower res hugely in games as its alot less (millions) of pixels to render, im happy to have a small res on my 17in book
-
@bestbacon I would say try it first and then if you don't like then send it back.
@catacylsm I agree with you. I actually like 1366x768 resolution. Easier on the eyes and less strain on the graphics card. -
-
Let us know what you think after this.
-
no problem. lets hope this laptop is one that i like, i realized theres a MSI service center within drivable distance for me XD
-
-
-
Dam, what a luxury having that close to your house
No shipping for you.
-
Edit: The Asus g51 also looks to be having some cooling problems so . -
-
Heres to MSI, Cheers. Hope build quality is good.

What MSI means to me

still not 7k im beginning to think it would be very hard to, did you run 3dmark at 1024x768 yet?
Its a shame increasing the voltage and overclocking the processor isn't possible because of temp that the cpu already sits at. -
-
-
-
-
-
By overclocking the processor, you meant the cpu right?
-
-
I never did a benchmark on 1280x768, I will have to try that as well.
-
-
At least you guys got RIM up there cranking out BlackBerrys.
I will look out for any processors and if I see some that ship to Canada for a decent price, I let you know.
