I've been looking at the GS63VR or the GP62MVR; it seems to me that they're a similar spec with the GP being a little heavier. I'm a little worried though that while a see a lot of info on the GS63VR- reviews, an owners lounge thread here etc- I don't see much for the GP62MVR. Is there a reason for this and are there other significant differences from the GS63VR? The price difference in favor of the GP is appealing...

There are some large differences in quality of the two builds. The GP is a very budget friendly gaming laptop, uses more plastic construction, doesn't have many of the same features like TB3, and probably doesn't have an IPS screen. That said I've seen it priced for some very good deals around $899 if I remember. Right now it isn't cheap anywhere so I can't recommend buying. Wait a few weeks and watch for sales.
Edit:
$999 after rebate. I've seen it at $899 though.

GP62MVR cuts many corners to have that low price tag:
- Soldered GTX 1060 3GB (The GS63VR has the 6GB MXM variant if I'm not wrong)
- More plastic-ish build. GS63 uses metal, plastic and rubber
- 60Hz TN panel with abysmal viewing angles, GS63 can either have a 60Hz IPS level panel or a 120Hz TN (better than the one in the GP62)
- No thunderbolt 3
- Worse cooling. But keep in mind the thin chassis in the GS63 could be problematic as well. It uses more fans but they're smaller.
- No support for NVME SSDs. You can only install one M2 Sata SDD and a conventional spinning disk.
It's up to you, if your budget is really tight but you still wish to get the best bang for your buck in terms of performance, go for the GP62MVR. If you don't mind those cut corners of course! GS series are more aimed for high budget / professional gamers.

The market segment has been more defined by MSI thus why the availability of such product. Still a good value.
