Guys do you know how to make the laptop work at full throttle while on battery? I have an MSI gt683.

All games (Starcraft 2, Demigod, etc..) run at 10 fps and that is not normal....

My gx660 (with ati 5870) had an option on the catalyst control panel to switch between gaming/balanced profile, which allowed to run games at full fps even while on battery.

    Thanks!

You can change the profile under the windows power options. You can set two different profiles, one while plugged in and another on battery. I think its safe to assume your "on battery" is set to power save mode or something along those line. Change it to performance or tweak it individually as you'd like. You can get there by Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options

thx for helping. no that's not the problem. I've changed it to performance and tweaked manually, but does not work. it seems to be something related to optimus

Have you tried changing power management mode in nvidia control panel to prefer maximum performance, I believe its pre set to adaptive mode.

I haven't tried gaming with just the battery, but if I remember right when on battery the gpu is locked in at .82 volts were as when plugged in it bumps up to 1.00 volt when there's a demand. Download gpu-z and check your clocks and voltages when plugged in and when on just battery.

Your battery is rated at 11.1v and has 7800 mAh capacity. This equals to roughly 86 watts of power, which is nowhere near enough to provide power to your system under heavy load. The 2630QM and a GTX 560M can draw 120 to 140 watts of power. You're not going to override this since it's something that is setup within the low level BIOS.

There is no Optimus for any of the GTX 560M equipped notebooks either. Like the GTX 460M, the 560M supports Optimus but it is up to the manufacturer to utilize it in their system design or not.

I've taken some screenshots so we can get more detailed information about this problem. I've read the alienware forums and they seem to hace the same problem: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/560579-r3-slooooow-battery.html

Here are the screenshots to compare the voltages and frecuencies when plugged in and when using the battery.

Maybe you can confirm this if you try to run any new 3d game while on battery.

Well it's kinda strange considering my gx660 (ati 5870 and i7) was able to run games at max fps and full graphics using the battery. And I don't think there are so many differences in power consumption between these systems..

There is a considerable difference between the two. The Arrandale i7 draws about 7-10 watts less, and the MR 5870 draws about 15-20 watts less. The MSI GX660R has an average draw of 110-120 watts. While it probably does throttle to a certain extent, it's not as severe as the GT683R or any other Sandy Bridge-based gaming notebooks for that matter.

mhh I didn't know there was such difference. However, 10 fps in sc2 for a gaming laptop is a ripoff. I think they shouldnt have capped the flock frequency that much. Maybe there is a way to increase it manually using a program like rivatunner..

That seems to be a common issue among all of the machines as well. The new setups require a lot more power, so running them at full settings on battery will cause them to slow down. I have that same issue on my ASUS machine with an i7.

Well my gx660 was able to run all games maxed @ hd on battery for about an hour. That's enough for some gaming in the university without carrying with the charger which weights about 1 kg.
