Currently running a Quadro k5000m in my MSI gx640!

What more needs to be said?
Hmmm, is my performance going to be limited by the PCI express running at only 2.5gb/s?
...Hope it works in the ms-16f2!

It might not work (as it didn't with my 16F2) - tried both Dell and Clevo without any luck.

Looking forward to your results.
Pau1ow, you got your hands on a dell 680m? -
Yep - no luck with the 16F2
- it worked actually fine in the MSI 1762 (GT70).

UPDATE: Running a k5000m in the GX640 now!
-
o m g ! let's see some benches and screenshots!
-
Hey niff, did you have to mod anything or did the GX640 just reckognize the K5000M like any GPU?
Congrats, thats quite some expensive (and powerful card). Pretty nice step up from your old and hot Quadro 4000M  -

Wow, nice to see so many replies so quickly!
I haven't benched anything in forever, lol.
No, I didn't have to do anything special, unless you count laptopvideo2go drivers as special. Though I decided to use kapton tape on a number of places. The heatsink for the 5850 as far as tension and leveling between the vRAM and GPU core areas is really not ideal, and there is also very little room under the card to cool the vRAM.
I just put thicker pads on the top and the thinner ones on the back. The ones on front are kind of too thick, so I used some thick thermal paste.
The one place where kapton tape is a necessity is on the 3rd smaller VRM of the card (with the DELTA logo, probably not on all cards). The lead comes in direct contact with the copper heatsink.
Pretty much the same setup with the Quadro 4000m, doesn't seem to be running any cooler... though I think the gk104 die is flatter than the gf104.
Unfortunately, there are 2 problems with benching, 1 it will likely overheat and 2 I don't have a PSU with more than 120 watts.
Though if I get ambitious in my spare time I suppose I might daisy chain a 65w adapter to my 120w and see how it works. -
Pretty shure the K5000M runs cooler than your 4000M if you look at performance/heat ratio
Thats awesome though, since the BIOS support for Kepler is there even in an "old" notebook such as GX640. I was warned by MSI engineers that the BIOS might not support the new Quadro`s
Looks good since I have the K4000M myself and will install it inside the GT70 and force the fans down to make it a quiet notebook. Luckily for me I get the heatsink for the 680M which will allign perfectly with the K4000M so no thermal pads is needed.
Hopefully the 16F2 will reckognize it too since you have 180W available there, more than enough juice for K5000M. Let us know how it works out -

It looks like you have a very early vBIOS...
Could you please dump it with nvflash:
Download NVFlash 5.118 for Windows | techPowerUp
Just run in commad prompt (cmd)
nvflash -b K5000MSI.ROM
We have bumped two versions to GTX 680M speeds:
HP K5000M vBIOS 80.04.12.00.03
DELL K5000M vBIOS 80.04.33.00.35 -

I have a ton of very early vBIOS.
though the others are for Quadro 3000m and 4000m.
Is it necessary to use nvflash to dump the vBIOS?
Yes, its an engineering release vBIOS, with a note that says "HWDIAG" every time the notebook turns on. I bet you could do some special things with this card, no? -
That's quite of a beast right there
I love when old machines run on par with the new ones
-
yes nvflash dumps it properly. SVL7 can bump your clocks to GTX 680M levels...like he did for the other K5000M versions.
-
Can we actually turn the 680M into K5000M ?
-
Usually the Geforce have a few cut lines by a laser, so they would work with a Quadro vBIOS, but not give you the extra performance in ProAps.
I have a spare K4000M if you are interested in having a real Qaudro. -

Wow, you originally said clevo 680m, now you got a k5000m. Looking forward to seeing if it works in your 16F2.

TODAY IS THE DAY. I found my Dell m1730 230 watt adapter.
Went to my local surplus store, got some industrial quality dc jacks.
I now have 3 Quadro k5000m, one with Samsung chips, each with a different vBIOS.... -
keep us updated niff.

Probably going to download some real benchmarks tonight - this is all I have... It seems to be a decent score, comparable to an (overclocked?) GTX 470 which is comparable to the 7970m.
I HATE THIS COOLING SYSTEMstays under 80c only when the notebook is on its side(!) otherwise it pretty much skyrockets to 100c during furmark, at least the Quadro 4000m did. At least this means adding a heatpipe and copper mass to the GPU area will be particularly effective.
Here is the first vBIOS:

WARNING: Extracted with GPU-Z. May not be a complete, working vBIOS.
P. S.
...this card is missing a resistor near the EEPROM area.definitely broken off the board. I'm not too surprised that it works fine, I've experienced this before, not sure how i feel about flashing the vBIOS - though I suppose its being read correctly so I shouldn't be afraid?

Ok so heres the 3dmark11:
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-740QM Processor,MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-1656 score: P4765 3DMarks
A little bit underwhelming. I'll get SVL7 to bump up the clocks maybe.
Max temp is 76c - again with the laptop on its side. -

........and GTX 680m speed achieved !!
Generic VGA video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-740QM Processor,MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD MS-1656 score: P5370 3DMarks
Completely stable... max temp 79c... stock cooling... "boost" is already disabled with quadros so it overclocks just like a normal card!
View attachment K5000MMSI.zip Here is the vbios extracted with NVFLASH.
Thats enough benchmarking for today. -
notebook confirmed working with K4000m as well..
