Posting a screenshot isn't that much of a hassle. It was just that your post came off as being suspicious of us pretending our laptops are better than they are. Although that might make us feel better about our purchase it would be a disservice to others who read these boards and only encourage MSI to continue without fixing the problems we are covering up.

What test do you want me to run for temps? -
how do i disable powerplay?
-
My laptop seems to be idling at 61 celsius for GPU and about 49 for CPUs....Pretty toasty....
-

The other thing is that we need to know the ambient temperature. -
Okay, I'm setting my script up so that it will also use frame data from FRAPS, so you can have a graph of framerates as well. I think that would be a useful addition.
-
What type of coolers do you guys use for GX640?
-
Newegg.com - Thermaltake Massive23 ST 23cm fan Notebook Cooler Model CLN0009
I ordered one of these last night as users have said it runs quiet with above average cooling. And it's pretty cheap compared to the competition.
Not that it matters, but Thermaltake's marketing for their Massive23 Coolers feature an MSI notebook that looks to have the same chasis as the GX640

On this video, it seems if you have the notebook on it, you can't hear the fans at all.

Room Temp: 21° C
idle CPU Temp : ~ 49° C (from speccy)
idle GPU : ~ 62° C (from catalyst)
Hard Drives : ~ 35° C (from speccy) -
Got it for $30 at a local store, and there's a $10 MIR. Hopefully I can get the MIR then I'd have it for $20 -
Does it get uncomfortable after a while? Taking for exemple the ZM NC1000, it does look like it as a more natural/ smoother pitch than the thermaltake. -
Do you notice your temps decreasing at all? -
What I can say is though that the right palmrest is much cooler.
As for the elevation problem: at home I use my notebook like a desktop anywayI have an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc etc. The built in LCD is off

if only mine did, or I could map it to some button...
-
cpu idle-54 max -71
gpu idle -62 max -81 (after 3dmarkvantage/06) -90 (after 5min furmark extreme burn test)
stock thermal. might apply as5 but atm it doesnt seem very necessary -
k well, so far ive played HON and GTAIV episodes from liberty city.
temps for hon were like 84deg max.
temps for GTAIV were about 98 deg max.
on my old nv 360gts m, the temps were 93+ in both and the graphics were not nearly as good as this card... the improvement is really noticible
ill post some screenshots later.
most importantly, is that this computers vent is on the right, so the place on the left where u rest ur hand does not get hot. -
It's a tradeoff between venting onto your left palm rest or venting onto your moues hand. However, since you have the option of moving your mouse hand somewhere else, it's better that way. Things are different if you're a left-handed gamer, though.
The G73's rear vents are an even better solution, but they come in a much larger laptop. -
No, screens here, but some repeated impressions.
While gaming GTA4/Crysis Warhead: max GPU temp 87 C.
Idling through the night (downloading torrents): min GPU 50 C (@100/150)
Gonna try to stress it a little more on furmark though. -
Dont do it! youl only be annoyed by high temps! xD, mind you crysis does warm the laptop up, i can boil beer with my 4850 and q9000 with that haha.
-
tried crysis too, max settings and about 95 degrees max.
played few hours of HON at about 80 degrees.
lovin this laptop
No cooler here, just a small laptop sized board to put it on.
is there anyway to remap that function button? stupidest place to put a FN key... ever... -
Personally, I just swapped Caps Lock and Left Ctrl.
-
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
whoah, 95C while crysis?
is GX640 really THAT hot?
(im traumatized with heat on lappies)
-
-
Ehhh 800 by 600 is not a hardware test
-
-
Native res and full screen, im sure it made a difference, and i want to see the 5870s frames at 1080p too!
-
Furmark on full HD is laggy though, too many furs. -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
I still have time though...
But yes, temperatures are phenomenal. -
So far for a one fan system, I'm impressed by MSI.
Getting the GX640 as thin as it is and as light as it is, this is a phenomenal laptop and no need to go to the dark side -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
LOL " the dark side"...
I'm limited by budget though
If i went Sager, i'd have to save up $300 more...
to get at least an i7 upgrade, a 500gbhdd, windows7, a full hd screen and IC thermal compound...
not good.
I've been considering the bestbuy G73, its on my budget too...
so right now my list goes:
-GX740 (still need more input)
-GX640 cuz its thin, light and just wow.
-G73JH in the list because of budget, dual fan setup, etc..
-NP8690 same as above but in last because of budget.. -

The best buy g73 is gimped though isn't it? And you lose the good warranty
I like Sagers but only if I'm using it as only a desktop replacement and have a spare Win7 disc on hand -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
Well, its i7, 500gb, 6gb ram, 1600 x 900...
for $1199, its really not a bad deal...
I'm in love with the MSIs (both 640 and 740)...
But these other two lappies are tempting me...
-
I'm going darkside for my next purchase that's for sure.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
remember, you'll need to factor in buying a best buy warranty (if you want a warranty) and supposedly the screen on the best buy one is no good? The G73 is a great machine but I just keep hearing bad things about the best buy one. -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
Me too... specially the BB model...
I'm really interested in teh MSIs...
I'm really into the 3 year warranty... bad thing is I'd have to mail it all the way up to the USA if I ever have a problem with it...
I'd buy any... I just dont wanna end up with an overheating lemon
-
Running furmark 1.8.2 got me 99c max after about 10 minutes or so. :eek CPU on prime 95 brought about 78c. Ambient is 74f now.
GPU idles stock clocks at 62c, cpu idles at upper 40's. -
I'd laugh if your ambient was 74C
74F = 23C, though, so your temps are normal for the GX640.
-
can't keep my c's and f's straight somedays lol.
-
played hon for an hour. max temp 82C.
-
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
wow 82C ain't that bad at all
!
but then again, hon is not a demanding game :\
-
-
i'll install bfbc2 just for temp purposes (cant believe i bought that game) but i dont think it will get much hotter than 82. copying 75gb steamfolder man this will take years, i cant get the estat for my external hd to work and usb2 is slowwwww. 1 hour remaining fun.
edit: played bfbc2 for about 40mins GPU max temp 88C CPU 77C. temps seems pretty good since everything is stock no as5 or such applied and its been sitting in the same spot for about 5 hours now -
dirt 2 for about 20 mins on high detail 1680x1050 showed max of 90c on the gpu. ambient 74f
-
sounds about right, i had similar temps with Dirt 2
-
Here is a guide for Auto downclock of the GPU at every startup:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...w-underclock-your-ati-5870-automatically.html
What are the best clocks for the best battery life/heat and that is stable?
And, Can we overclock the gpu to HD5870's clock without too much heat? -
Many of us already knew how to do this, but it's handy having a nice guide to link to anyway.
