I snooped around the BIOS a bit, didn't really see anything of interest but I ws just in there to change the boot order

Try alt + insert in the advanced tab menu and see if nothing comes up.

The jokes on you Queen! I carry the anti-Borg virus. It's similar, but not identical, to the strain that the future Admiral Janeway used to destroy the Collective so that Captain Janeway could get Voyager back to the Alpha Quadrant.
You're falling apart at the seams, literally! That's why you're subwoofer isn't working. In the words of Cdr Worf, "Assimilate this!!!!"
Just kidding!

That's what I turned up on the first of 11 pages. Its a pretty common issue and is almost always caused and fixed by video card drivers. -
Yes well to come back to problems with these 2 notebooks, is there a way i can make msi make the updates faster so that hybernation and sleep will work?
Oh and msi bios updates are a hassle :S -
Yes. Assimilate MSI's corporate leadership and board of directors. Bend them to your will, and the drivers will be forthcoming.
-
so is this PCI-E x16 problem only when the laptop is on battery? And can someone bring me up to speed with this hibernation issue?
-
Someone try the key combo that dead posted in bios on the advanced tab please,
The sooner we can see whats inside the faster we can attempt to pin the issues. -
At least a quick fix to the issue with the PCI-E x16, with stock drivers was to disable ATI`s Powerplay in CCC. Of course this will disable some of the power-saving features. But this is at least /care for me
After disabling and rebooting, my PCI-E is always @ x16.
This including booting up with no power cable connected.
Also tested to close the lid, sleep and hibernation after disabling Powerplay, and these work. And the image also comes back.
Probably not the best solution, but at least it works for me.
Driver Packaging Version: 8.69-091211a-096612C-MSI
Haven`t tested this on any newer driver. -
Actually kska thats the best solution available right now, and if your machine is functioning with the appropriate MSI drivers then its like that msi are aware of the issue
And will not try and fix it if its working with their own drivers.
What you could do is leave MSI's CCC installed and try with a different raw driver. -
I stated earlier that I couldn`t install later drivers on my MSI because of the "The Installation Verification Software will prevent driver download on certain notebook products."
Although, I had the 10.3 preview drivers which didn`t have this software. But when I installed these I had the black screen when I got to the Windows log in screen. So I rolled back the driver and disabled Powerplay.
Anyway, is there any way to install newer drivers or disable that?
Or does still Mobility Modder the trick? cba to test atm -
is the pci-e issue really that big? i probably won't need super high performance, should i not worry about it until a driver comes out that fixes it?
-
Try a manual INF install
Or boot up, hit that key (F8) and disable driver signature signing or whatever it is, drivers should install fine.
Also run drivercleaner to completely clean other driver remenants out of your machine. -
A bit offtopic but instead of creating a new topic.
I installed 10.3 and didn't know what to do so I used the OS-recovery function. Now it takes forever to startup the computer. I tried defrag it but doesnt help. any ideas? -
I've just run 3DMark Vantage twice, but both times it went to x1 and got poor results even though when I started the benchmark it was at x16. Rather annoying, because I thought that kind of thing wasn't going to happen.
I'm not sure what the deal is, but I've tried it with ATI PowerPlay disabled, and ATI PowerPlay enabled in Max Performance mode, and I got the same result both times. What's stranger is that 3DMark06 ran just fine with the PCIe @ x16 before then.
What did people do to fix this? -
this sound sleep problem is really bothering me now. anyone else have this and is there a solution?
if not im just throwing the drivers away. -
Off Topic , can you go to your bios , Advanced tab and press alt + insert and let me know what you see there ? Thanks.
(a pic if possible)
-
and you mean bios at booting screen? -
Yes , on booting up press DELETE , it will take you to the BIOS , from there navigate to the ADVANCED tab and press ALT + INSERT .. the hidden menu will come up , usually for overclocking and so on ( just curious to know what MSI implemented in the Gx740 ) -

I'll do a little digging in the BIOS when I get home from work
-
-
Na man , it supposed to fix the pci-e x1 issue. What sound issue you been having ?
No hidden menu ? -
Yeah, it looks like 10.3 properly fixes up the PCIe x1. I just ran 3DMark Vantage and got 7162 CPU/7069 GPU = P7092, no problems. Sadly I forgot to run HWMonitor at the time, so I didn't see how hot it got.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
whats the sound issue?
-
Also happens when starting a song from itunes. after a few seconds the song starts to play. -
And which version of 3DMark Vantage do I need - basic or advanced? I ran my free trial and only hit 4948 on the GPU. PCI-E was showing x16 before & x1 after the test so will need to run again. -
this . i just removed the damn realtek drivers.
now i can hear normal sound again, at least. -
Hmm wonder if its related to the bus issues, perhaps try disable hdmi audio.
-
a guy made a new thread containing the fix
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
so anyone else want to try the new vbios?
-
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
-
what does it actually do?
-
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
false alarm, I tried it. Says its the one already installed so MSI was just late posting it
-
It's fine anyway, since 10.3 seems to conclusively fix the PCIe x1 problem. They still need to get it to sleep and hibernate properly, though.
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
disappointing, if a new vbios would have improved something it'd be better
-
Yeah, if the vBIOs suddenly improved the cooling that would be great XD
At least come up with something to hope for instead of just "improving something". -
So any update on this problem/solution yet, guys?
-
With the 10.3 drivers and PowerPlay off, the PCIe is always at x16 and I have no trouble with hibernation or sleep.
-
Does that mean that when I buy this, and do a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate, I go to ATI and download the driver, and turn Powerplay off? What about the "msi cd drivers" and "not using ccc"? Which do you mean?
Thanks -
What does powerplay do exactly? And is it a big difference if its off?
-
-
That was happening to me before as well, but turning PowerPlay off fixed it. As I understand it, with PowerPlay on the GPU downclocks itself automatically when you close the screen, but something must go wrong when it tries to resume. Something similar seems to happen when you sleep or hibernate.
-
Therefore, this problem still persists, and MSI guys havent done anything yet? hmmmm
-
I was told the MSI official drivers work fine (Nomatter how outdated)
If they work fine then MSI wont do anything,
Powerplay works off power profiles too, so high performance in ccc on the high performance on windows will result in that being saved to that plan (Same with low power too),
You can customly set it in CCC and i think it saves to the windows profile. -
The official drivers might work okay for sleep/hibernation, but the PCIe running at x1 was a big problem for performance.
