Im planning to buy a laptop and what I'm looking for is a gtx 1080, 17 inch full hd (i like more fps than 3k or 4k), 120hz with g sync. Everything falls into place with the msi gt73vr.
however it confuses me when I check the specs on their official website and some other sites, it doesn't mention g sync unlike with the gt62vr etc. So i emailed xoticpc and asked.
Here's what he says
"Sorry for the confusion. I have gotten confirmation from MSI there is no Gsync. The 120hz screen is similar to having gsync but it is not gsync"
For those who own gt73vr,can you please confirm this, because he said that there's a g sync option in the control panel but in reality it doesn't really work.
It makes sense because msi and other websites didn't mention it in the specs wherein it is a high selling point.

Yes the GT73VR has G-Sync.
The screen is gsync certified. -
That's good to hear, did you experienced it personally i mean is there really no screen tearing?

The 120Hz will definitely eliminate/reduce screen tearing, especially if you're producing a lot of fps. You probably wont notice it even if it was there unless you're really producing insane amounts and the game engine allows it. On a 60Hz screen its definitely noticeable but on 120Hz you'd have to look real close to see it or have crazy frames.
Gsync helps by keeping the monitor refresh rate synced with the frame rate.. which "eliminates/reduces tearing". But you'll only see the benefits when the frame rate is lower than the max refresh rate as the purpose is to match it if you're not producing that much frames.
If you're producing a ton of fps you can also look up Fast Sync which was introduced with Pascal and works on Maxwell as well. -
There is a bunch of factors here.
What country are you in?
GSync is different on the laptops vs desktops. Desktops have chips in the monitors that work really well. The laptops do it software based just like AMD Freesync. So maybe that's what he meant? It's a different implementation of GSync, which is slightly worse than the desktop version.
GSync also doesn't work at or over your refresh rate. So at 120fps it turns off and either enables tearing again or enables VSync which adds input lag. Both desktop and laptop do this. It is recommended to cap your fps just below (i.e. 117 fps) to keep GSync on and still be at a high fps.
@Tanner@XoticPC wanna chime in here? Or @pat@XOTICPC ? Is there really no GSync on the GT73 even though it is listed as having it? -
The GT73VR does have G-Sync. A friend of mine purchased it from XoticPC back in November. Even though the product description didnt say that. When he received the product and turned it on. It was G-Sync enabled.
I think they don't officially advertise it because of something to do with the G-Sync panel certification from Nvidia. This has been the case since August 2016. Don't know what is taking them so long. -
I ordered this laptop on amazon last month. The xotic reps there said it didn't have g sync, and msi's page didn't list it as a feature, but it definitely has it, you just have to make sure to enable it in the nvidia control panel.
-
Not that I don't believe you but are you sure it's working?
This part of what OP said, "For those who own gt73vr,can you please confirm this, because he said that there's a g sync option in the control panel but in reality it doesn't really work. "
Is most unusual. And it could be hard to know since such a high performing laptop with such a high fps display may make GSync not overly noticeable. -

Here is a quick test I made lol excuse my lack of editing...
I used AMD FreeSync Windmill demo but I used the test pattern to show.
GSync ON@120Hz 60FPS vs. GSync OFF @120Hz 60FPS
What's not shown on here which I tested later on was 45, 50, 55, 60 FPS and with GSync OFF it would look worse at 45FPS with tearing but with GSync ON it would look normal. -
Thanks man appreciate it, forgive me for asking, so what would be your conlusion? That's a gt73vr with gtx 1080 right? -

Nah this is on a 1070.. but I'm pretty sure that they all have GSync.. -
My GT73VR TITAN (puchased in Italy, near Milan) - GTX 1070 - 32 gb DDR4 - has a 120 Hz, FHD, Gsync panel

Yeah the FHD 120hz / 5ms panel wasn't GSYNC certified so that also got me confused because when I ordered my laptop (see the model in my sig), it said GSYNC certified. Strange, I thought that FHD Panel wasn't going to ever be GSYNC certified
-
so it does have g sync, its just not certified? did get that right?
-

I can't be sure until I get the laptop to verify this, just placed my order last night -
i see, i also placed my order last night, hoping it will have. because it's also mentioned in hidevolution.
-
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
oh you got yours from HIDevolution?? -
I have the 120hz 5ms TN screen and it HAS GSYNC even though it wasn't advertised as such. I verified this using the nvidia control panel and also by plugging in my Asus PG279Q monitor via DisplayPort. The monitor led changes color based on the mode and it switches into GSYNC mode right away. If I disable it I can see a difference.
My guess is that the Chi Mei panel that MSI uses wasn't certified in time for production and as such they can't advertise it on the packaging or something silly like that. -

Please install AIDA64 Extreme, then go to the screen tab and tell me the exact model of that screen:
-
no i ordered it here in a shop in philippines but its the same model 425 with kabylake, i just checked for websites for g sync and i only found it in gentech and hidevolution.
-
im assuming yours has the skylake processor, i personally saw g sync in the nvidia control panel on that one, but im not sure with the kabylake and that's what worries me
-
I had a skylake 017 but I exchanged it for a kaby lake 425. Both had the same GSYNC screen.
@Phoenix I will get you the screen model info tonight after work.Spartan@HIDevolution likes this. -

Wait a second, I thought for a screen to be GSYNC certified, there has to be no Intel integrated GPU but this one has a switch for the IGPU? Or maybe because it's like a hardware switch which makes you choose one or the other then we still have G SYNC?
-
I have the gtx1080 model with the 120 5ms fhd display, under nvidia control panel I enabled the gsync indicator, and when gaming the "gsync on" caption shows in the top left corner.

In the nvidia control panel you can select the option for an overlay caption to appear in game whenever Gsync is engaged in game.Senbei and Spartan@HIDevolution like this.

If it has gsync then you can turn it off or on in the Nvida control panel. Just look there it literally says G-sync

What I don't get is people here are saying gsync is software based for laptops. If that's true then all laptops with nvidia graphics could implement gsync if the software is available for it? And if it is implemented would it be through a bios update. It just begs the question, how come all 10 series laptops don't have gsync if it's just a software based thing for laptops. With 1070 sli on my laptop I haven't noticed any tearing in dying light and it usually gets to 350fps or so. Adaptive sync works real well too but of course, limited to 60fps(which is fine for me I guess). Wish I could try fastsync but it appears to be unsupported in sli.

The early release of G-Sync requires both hardware and software support for it to work. It's likely this particular component is built-in in G-Sync certified display panels thus why if it's not certified then it can never function.
