Long story short, I love my GE62 7RF, what I am not so keen on is that it was sold to me under the premise that the 1 TB hard drive was 7200RPM.

It looks like it has a 5400RPM drive instead.

Once I open up the machine and decipher what the actual drive is - the betting is on a 1TB WD Blue, as that is what is reported everywhere except Windows device manager, I'll be more 'enlightened'. Will leave to cool overnight.

According to BIOS/Windows it is the HGST HTS721010A9E630 which is a 7200RPM drive

According to various utilities, including MSI's help centre (!) it is a WDC WD10JPVX-22JC3T0 which is a 5400RPM WD Blue.

I know that HGST is a WD company, - (link to 'supposed' drive https://www.hgst.com/products/hard-drives/travelstar-7k1000 ) so that doesn't bother me, and-it sounds petty, but the faster drive was one of the attractions. Plus I don't like being misled, so hopefully things will be settled when I open it up again.

I will be back to confirm one way or t'other....

So where do I go from here ? I'd rather not send the laptop back but I'm not happy I didn't get what I thought I was getting......

It is being sold as having a 7200RPM Drive

Does the drive has another sticker with MSI's own serial number?

Not that I could see but I did not remove it from the cradle (too many screws and too early in the morning!) when I am next in the case I shall look.

Have you also checked with your reseller about this?

No but MSI got back to me after doing a check on my serial number. It is a 5400 RPM drive. Fair enough but my and other resellers have it marked up as a 7200. Will get in touch.

I see, so your SKU is supposed to come with 5400RPM then? Hmmm.

I'd be telling PC World to send me the 7200rpm drive they advertised.

Apparently so, but PCW and amazon and a lot of others are selling them as having 7200 drives. MSI or WD are a bit naughty as well as it looks like they are doing something to the firmware to make is show as a 7200 HGST drive, when upon inspection it isn't.

That's what I thought too. I'll be emailing therm in the morning with pictures and all... :) As I said, I'd let it slide but the 7200 drive was a factor in my decision to buy this laptop.

I've had no response from PC World yet. Bank Holiday so I am not really surprised. I did get my 2TB firecuda this morning and yes I KNOW its a 5400 drive :twitchy: but balls to it, I can't afford a SSD  so this was the next best option.

    Will see what happens.

A SSHD isn't well suited for mass storage duty, as the point of these drives is for the flash memory to "learn" what programs and files are used most frequently. So unless you're accessing the same things over and over again, you won't see any benefit. Better to have saved some money on a regular platter drive.

Point taken, but It will be my 'gaming drive' so the circumstances you describe will be met.
I thoroughly researched before my purchase and I think I will be ok. ;)

Are you going to be playing the same games all the time? I had the 1 TB version of this drive, and I noticed no improvement because I play a variety of games. I elected to save $30 and get a standard 7200 RPM model.

Long time since original post so here's an update:

I emailed My issue to PC world customer services on 24/08/17 I included the photos you have seen in this thread previously and told them that I wasn't happy they'd been advertising it as 7200 and I'd only got a 5400. (Irrespective of MSI's confirmation).

I got an emailed response back on 29/08/2017 :

    Dear asm1,

    Case Reference: abdcefg (redacted)

Thank you for your email dated 24th August 2017. Please accept my apologies for the delay in this response. I would have liked to discuss this further over the telephone, however, there was no response on the number we hold for you. My response therefore is via email.

I am sorry to learn that you believe you have been miss sold this item, we can only advise that you return back to the store with your item and receipt, the store will be able to assist you further. In the meantime, I have contacted our Head Office to review the description of the specification on our website.

    A Person

    ---------------------------------------

My response two hours later (still 29/08/2017 within business hours)

    Hi A Person

Thank you for your reply. Please bear with me as disability/pain levels necessitates my taking strong medication which usually makes me very sleepy. I have been known to sleep through the phone ringing although usually it is more than loud enough to wake me. I suspect that has been the case here as I have a "Witheld" number in my 1471 - from 12:44pm today. (1471 is a last number infoservice that we can dial in the uk on landlines)

On to the matter at hand, Cerebral Palsy (disability) is making it particularly difficult /painful for me to move at the moment, even with my crutches so the chances of my being able to get to a store are unfortunately very slim.

I can be reached on <land line no> or <mobile number> - if you give me a time frame to aim for I am more than happy to take a call and discuss the issue.

Attatched is a picture of my receipt where the appropriate information is visible.

    ---------------------------------------

That brings us up to today, about 2 hours ago:

I get another phone call from a lowly CS rep, who was an 'indian gentleman'. We back and forthed over the issue which I don't think he really understood.
At one point he gave me the old chestnut that by opening the laptop I had "voided warranty". and "our engineer says...." I set him straight MSI allow upgrades without voiding warranty.

"I am looking on the website and I can't see it what is the problem?" -

I nearly had a fit. You recall from the text above that "A Person" had "contacted our Head Office to review the description of the specification on our website."
I'd noticed over the weekend that all mention of HDD speed had disappeared. - no wonder he couldn't see it, they've updated the website!

Lots of back and forth to his manager. (going round in circles) Unfortunately I didn't get his name but he dumped me on to one of the engineers at the store I bought it from.

This time I got the chap's name and he was REALLY helpful once he'd established what the story was.

It is not a store issue, as they can only refund or replace. They have no control over the website - that was head office.

I told him the laptop was fine and I didn't want to refund/replace as I'd been using it for over a month etc etc.
Eventually he understood my issue and we established that I should not have been passed to him - he said he thought that the chap who passed me over didn't understand what had happened and was going round and round in circles).

    I used a car analogy:

"I saw a car for sale and it was advertised as having 20" wheels...... I was really wanting bigger wheels so I bought it.
When I took delivery of my new car, I discovered I had only 15" wheels - even though the sales literature sold it to me as having 20 inch wheels as standard."

Customer services should've dealt with it or Head office (doh!) as it is not a store issue.

It sounds like the second guy was passing the buck again, but he really wasn't - he was super helpful and gave me the customer services number and email (oddly different to the one I had used previously).

It now looks well dodgy that they've changed the website BEFORE contacting me to resolve the issue.

Understandably I am a bit wound up after nearly 90 minutes on he phone. Not to mention tired and sore. I need a break before I contact customer services, so will probably leave that until tomorrow.

I only have the case number emails and photos you have seen, unfortunately there is no "PC WORLD" logo but it is pretty obviously theirs.

    To be continued......
