Is there anyway to get it back, already reinstalled windows. Anyway to find the backup or is it gone permanently

You were storing your backup on your hard drive?

Unfortunately yes I did. Didn't get much of a chance to port it to an external before I tried installing Kali -
It's gone, but the good news is you can do it correctly the next time
Do you remember how large it was?
I usually keep my latest image on the Macrium Reflect boot recovery flash drive.
I write it to the drive after imaging to an external drive - so I have it in 2 places - I don't bother keeping on the internal drive as that's too tempting - as you've found.
64GB to 512GB USB 3.0 flash drives can be had relatively cheaply, heck you could even take an old internal 2.5" HDD/SSD in an external 2.5" bus powered case, and put it into service as your boot recovery drive - I've done that before.
You aren't the only one to do this this week, BTW
It happens to all of us at one point or another... buck up, keep calm, and carry on.Last edited: Apr 30, 2017 -

I'll take your wise words to mind. I'll back up next time before doing anything that requires messing with the drives. Slowly getting everything back. Just can't remember everything I had downloaded was the issue.hmscott likes this. -
Definitely buy an external USB hd for your backup images at least, best case scenario buy a 2 drive NAS that has raid 1 capability.

If a new OS had already been installed then the lost files aren't recoverable at all because new data were written over them. Best to keep backup in either external drive, or cloud.hmscott likes this.
I lost my macrium backup on my MSI laptop while trying to install Linux
