Just upgraded my GT73VR to EC Firmware 17A1EMS1.112

I found a newer EC Firmware on the GT73EVR 7RE TITAN Drivers page

So me being curious George and since the EC Firmware for the GT73VR Titan Pro is still on the old .108 I thought heck, lemme try it since the laptop models are essentially the same

1) Download the EC Firmware from here = https://www.msi.com/Laptop/support/GT73EVR-7RE-Titan.html#down-bios

2) Extract the ZIP file j00 just downloaded

3) Disable your AntiVirus and exit all programs

4) Right click on ECWIN.BAT and choose Run As Admin

5) Press Y to confirm

6) Your fans will start spinning

7) After the EC firmware has been flashed, the laptop will shutdown

8) Unplug the power cable and wait for 30 seconds

9) Replug the power cable and turn on your laptop

10) Enter the BIOS again and load setup defaults

11) Save and exit then shutdown the laptop then reset your EC Firmware:



12) Enter BIOS again and reconfigure everything the way it was before

13) It is recommended to set the VR Current limit from the stock 0 to 400 which shows as 100A to avoid CPU Throttling

Note: I am not responsible if you brick your laptop, do this at your own risk. if you are not acing any issues with your laptop currently, don't even bother. I did it because I like to always have the latest and greatest

Did the fan curve change? Can you post a photo of the CPU and the GPU fan curve? Select Advanced and select default.

Phoenix, that doesn't reset the EC Firmware.
In order to reset the EC, you either have to unplug the battery for 30 seconds, or you need to press the underside pin hole with a paper clip for 30 seconds (both after unplugging the AC cord).

While it may still work, the EC may not be fully reset....

 

I did unplug the power cord for 30 seconds as stated in the guide. Do I need to press the button under the laptop also? and for how long?

 

That button is for resetting the EC. It's one or two presses of it for 30 seconds. SVET included that in his instructions for his Bios mods. Resetting the CMOS (as you already know) is holding down the main power button for 40 seconds.

There's no harm in resetting the EC. Usually a reset is only needed if something strange starts happening, like fans don't reply correctly or FN key isn't working, but it's sure much easier to do than a full CMOS reset. If it means anything, I did reset the EC long after my failures at making Command Rate 1 work a second time, and stopped trying (i should have tried right after resetting the EC. I just did it for the 'heck of it') but as soon as I tried it again last night, CR 1T worked right away (<15 seconds to POST), unlike before. Might be luck or placebo, and going to be smart and not try to "test" my theory.

it would be nice if there were a changelog. Do you (edit) still have the "black screen" dGPU bug after "Load Defaults ->iGPU->dGPU->black screen?"

 

These are the default fan curves for EC .108

Looks like the only change was the CPU fan curve.

 

Do you think it would be save to install it on a GT73VR 6RE ?

Edit: Just installed the EC Bios on my laptop, no problems so far. (also got the new CPU curve)

 

Yeah so it seems everything is the same on the GPU side.

For the CPU the fan speed still the same at 65% at high temps, 20% at low temps.

The change happens when they ramp the fan speeds for the CPU to 34% earlier, and added the 40% at mild load.

So instead of a 30% -> 35% -> 55% jump its a 34% -> 40% -> 55%.

Theoretically this would make the laptop slightly louder at same temps 34% (vs. 30% rpm) but the added 40% rpm will keep it cooler and maintain the temps (should keep the sound overall lower) till it kicks up to 55% when they're both at the same level. (Thats my guess lol).

 

Where is the EC reset pin hole on the bottom of the notebook?

Got it working on my GT73VR 6RF. The file name/convention is exactly the same for this as it is for the much older EC update that was specifically released for the 6RF. The new fan curve is present and accounted for. It also for whatever reason fixed a garbled text display problem I was having with the MSI Silent Mode software, which is basically the fan control component of Dragon Center with none of the other bloatware.

 

Do you have a link to the "Silent Mode" software that works on the GT73VR? It isn't even listed on their software section.

 

It's actually called Silent Option and is technically (still) a beta piece of software. It only officially supports Haswell, Broadwell, and Skylake. Not sure if it would work on a Kaby Lake model - you may need Dragon Center proper in that instance.
