Hi guys, i recently read that ccfl screens will lose their brightness day by day.. Is that true? What you think will be the lifespan of a ccfl screen found in gx740?
-
The display loses about 50% of its brightness after 6 months of intensive use (8 hours a day everyday) but the controller compensates by upping the voltage for the backlight. As a result, in many years to come, you won't notice any significant change other than pure white looking more like egg white (yellowish).
LCD panels with LED backlights don't have those issues, but they generally produce more washed-out blacks (unless they have local dimming, which is very costly).
Anyway, you shouldn't have to worry. You'll throw out/sell your notebook long before the screen starts to degrade. -
thanks dakins..so should i think of anything before buying a MSI e7405??

Hmm, this is an interesting question I wasn't aware of. Are CCFL screens a popular option in budget/lower-priced laptops in general? Or is the market overwhelmingly LCD?

CCFL: backlight
LCD: display -

Yep, they are all LCD screens, some just have a CCFL backlight and some have an LED backlight.
I think my whites are slightly yellow

what you mean by 50% loss? And if the controller steps up the voltage for the light, does that mean more power being consumed which means less battery life?
-
Yeah, it's the case with all CCFL-backlit LCDs I've seen. The pure white provided by LEDs is nice at first, but it quickly leads to eye fatigue because they're so effin' bright. CCFL light is easier on the eyes.
CCFL just means cold cathode fluorescent light, it's the same thing that's probably all over the ceilings at your workplace, albeit a lot larger. Like all fluorescent lights, the ones found in LCD monitors gradually lose their intensity, especially if they're pushed to the limit often and for extended periods of time.
You won't notice a significant change in battery life because the lithium ion cells in your notebook's battery will also degrade with time, and eventually the battery won't hold a charge at all.
But don't count on that happening any time soon. -
okay finally got insight to the display types.. Thanks guys
Life span of ccfl screens..
