Yes. Stil haven't received yet ?
-
Of course you can start the review off with the MS-1022...just make sure you include the comparison with the Asus and Compal somewhere in the body. -
Arrives tomorrow along with the components I selected for this review.
-
Correction, the barebones just arrived. Components are here tomorrow.
-
awesome, this is the notebook I've been waiting for...
please tell us the build quality (is it a cheap plastic like hp/compaq?) can you post some pictures of it before you work on a review? -
Klas,
No cheap plastic here. Similar combination of materials to the MS-1029 with the bottom being constructed of an aluminum alloy. The back of the LCD uses an ABS plastic with a badge cutout which will allow backlighting through for illumination (like the MS-1029). Palmrest area is a very solid ABS plastic and the keyboard is not clickety/clackety like the MS-1029 (softer feel). There is a little flex from the center to the right side of the keyboard but I will reserve final judgement until the build is completed as it might be mitigatged with components installed.
Unfortunately, I am still digital cameraless thanks to an accidental water spill courtesy of my wife. Might be picking up a new one tonight so I will get pics up if possible. -
Pics as requested:
-
Pics continued (unable to post all in one thread due to forum restrictions):
If anyone would like greater detail of any portion of this system, please post your requests. -
1. where on the keyboard is the delete key? (this is oddly important to me)
2. are there any ports on the rear of the laptop?
3. how's the battery life? -
1. The "DEL" key is located in the top right corner (last key horizontally and vertically)
2. The only port on the rear is the RJ-11 (modem) jack on the back right.
3. The system is not yet assembled. The pics were taken of the barebones per the request of members here prior to build. The components I selected for this build will arrive tomorrow: P-M 760, 2 x 512MB DDR533, 100GB 5400RPM HD (Hitachi) and Intel Pro Wireless 2915 -
Wow, in terms of looks, it looks alot better than it's rival, the Compal EFL30! and the best thing is..the vent is on the left side! the one thing i always hated about MSI models is that they were on the right..and not only that..in the middle too!
if possible, could u measure the depth of the palm rest? i'm guessing it's 4 inches between the keyboard and the end of the notebook. -
I'll bet you that Compal EFL30 looks better and more sturdy except for its keyboard. I currently have a Compal EFL30, and I like it very much better than Asus Z63a. More importantly, heat is not an issue for Compal EFL30. Previously, I had Asus Z63a and installed a 7200rpm hard drive on it. It generated heat and was so hot. I was uncomfortable with it. However, Compal EFL30 works like a charm. I feel little warm, but very comfortable. Its screen is bright and sharp just like a Fujitsu screen as a comparision.
-
^hey, why not write a review for NBR, Compal EFL 30 vs Z63a. we had one before of IBM T43 vs Portable one MX (Asus). If you do an indepth review, complete with bench marks (pcmark, 3dmark05, battery drainer, etc), the site will give u a nice $60
good way to cover costs. that's what I did with my Fujitsu.
-
Goren:
I didn't have a tape measure/ruler handy, but I would say it is more like 3". -
thank you for pictures unleaded, I am diffentely considering this notebook now, I would like to know how it compares to Compal 30 though. is it the one
-
I will try to get at least some initial impressions up this weekend, Klas, but I won't be able to draw any direct comparisons to the EFL-30 as I have not tested that unit and do not have one on hand.
-
can you take a picture of the bottom?
-
cool thank you! is that the fan on top right?
-
That is where the fan would intake, yes, however I have not yet installed the heatsink/fan assembly. Components just arrived so I will attempt to build tonight, but I might encounter resistance from the wife.

-
good so far......if only price was cheaper......
yes somebody compare this and the compal -
i think it's priced reasonably, I would rather pay slightly higher, but get better quality... which doesn't make sense why Sony charging a premium for so-so laptops. it's a waste especially when they have such a nice screens
-
-
Goren,
I carry the Compal EFL-30 but I have not done an extensive review, benchmarking of it personally.
I appreciate the offer to "remove" the lil lady but certain "incentives" outweigh my desire to get this system built tonight. -
:base: can't wait
-
how is "putting together" coming along?
-
Running review is up at http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=1206063#post1206063
-
Anyone know if there's gonna be a higher powered battery for this laptop? I'm interested in it.. but the 6 cell doesn't seem enough.
-
Just out of curiosity...and because I can't see them in the pics, where are the speakers located? Are they under the LCD like I can vaguely make out? Or are they in a front faced more standard configuration?
-
They are behind a grill just underneath the LCD
-
Great, thanks! I think it's a better spot because you won't muffle them when you're typing. Although, good headphones put any notebook speakers to shame.
I'm basically sitting and rocking back and forth. I am so ready to buy it's not funny. I wish the money would come in faster!! -
if you get a HP/Compaq they have pretty decent speakers, it's unfortunate that build quality and screen sucks in those...
-
Yeah, so does the Toshiba Satellite M-50 series....with HK speakers right under the LCD!
Side note...and back to the thread topic...how is the 1022 for fan noise. I'm sure it's fine or something would have been mentioned, but just curious. Also, has anyone picked this one up yet? I can't wait till I can. -
I'm buying 1 in about 2 weeks time . My shop can order them from yesterday , with 2 days delivery time ( it's the S425 , same like 1022 ) . I'm thinking it's the best value for my money and it is small ... like 13" small , i like it ....
-
I've just bought the S425. strange thing, after i shut off the computer, the optical mouse still remains on! it remains on till i disconnect the notebook from the power supply. anyone know what's going on? the same thing happens for all the other USB devices as well.
-
where did you get s425? it supposed to be a yonah laptop.
-
its a sonoma... the s425 is a pre configured version of the 1022
-
The s425 is the one with the white interior and 4.1 speaker setup, correct? I'm looking to get the 1022, but the 425 enticed me for the speakers. There would be some quality sound coming from those.
I didn't know that was available for purchase in the states yet?
Where did you get it? Are you in the U.S....I suppose that's a valid question as well. -
An MSI 1022 variant is on the fore in white which is "Dolby Certified"....ETA looks to be in the March timeframe.
-
How come they can't get a better gpu in this? The Sony 13" has a 7400 Geforce, is it just the design or trying to keep it the price down?
-
I actually found this on google. I can't quite remember the name of the site, but it had customization of the 425. I think it was available for purchase as well, because there were prices.
As far as price goes, it looks like 1849 is minimum for this baby, and that's not the greatest setup. Granted this is the ONLY site IN ENGLISH that had it. Otherwise, I just ordered the 1022 HOORAY! -
--Bump--
My MS-1022 review has been submitted. Watch for it in the near future!! -
^ i look forward to it! i can't believe how cheap this machine is.. i went onto Unleaded's site.. configured an MSI 1022, Asus Z62f (yep that new dual core 14" widescreen) and the Z63a.. and the
MSI 1022 ends up being cheaper than the Z63a by a significant margin (but has a lower capacity battery),
being only $10 more than the Z62f but offers a dedicated graphics card and having the same battery capacity
and being over half a pound lighter than both :O -
-
This is covered in the "Updated MSI 1022" thread...
The NEW SZ Sony Vaio now has a 7400, but their former 13.3 had a 6200 (the S Series). The 1022 came to the states in late November. Don't know why they didn't put a better gpu in, but the fact that they put one in at all contributed to me buying one. Most brands didn't have the right specs for the right price, and dedicated graphics is what almost always gets left out of the mix on these little powerhouses. Nice to see that some companies are still trying to get decent cards into thin and lights, though. -
My MS-1022 review is now up and running!! You can find it in the Notebook News and Reviews forum, or on the main page under headlines (limited time on that one I'd assume). Or just click the link in my sig line... Thanks again for everyone's help...I hope my review and experiences can benefit others.
