So I recently purchased a MSI GT72 2QD laptop which comes with 12gb of RAM by default. Since it's mixing a 4GB and 8GB stick it's running asynchronous dual channel mode and so I'm about to upgrade the ram to 24GB (by adding a 4GB and a 8GB stick). My question is, what slots would I need to place the 4GB and 8GB sticks in respectively (since the notepack has 2 easily accesible free ram slots) in order to achieve proper synchronous dual channel? I'm hoping not to have to remove the motherboard to access the other ram slots.

Put the sticks of the same size in slots physically next to each other. EG 2 under keyboard 8GB and two under main hatch 4GB. This will allow it to use all ram in dual channel.

So the only way to run proper dual channel would be to access the ram slot under the keyboard? I guess I might as well stick with the asynchronous dual channel then since I don't think it's worth the hassle of removing the motherboard just to access those two ram slots. Thanks for the answer though.

It is not that difficult to do it, here's one video that shows you how.

That video only shows how to access the two free unused slots from the easy access bottom plate, i think the OP was meaning to get to the ram slots physically under the keyboard on the other side of the motherboard. That would require basically dismantling the entire laptop. I agree its probably not worth the effort to replace it as asynchronous doesnt have too much of an effect on performance as long as you arent maxxing out your ram anyway.

Aye, getting to the two slots under the keyboard requires a more involved tear down. Unless the time and effort involved is worth it to you, it may be best to leave it, even if you're stuck with asynchronous dual channel (which isn't a terrible thing anyway).

MSI do have a full tear down video on YouTube if you want to check what is involved.

This is (an all be it low quality) full tear down.
