So I came across this while on the MSI website. It's the only configuration listed of the GE72 as of right now. It's equipped with a GTX 960M (which is just an overclocked 860M). I expect to see 965M and 970M variants in the next couple days.
Thoughts?
EDIT: There is now also a listing for a 965M variant. Check it out here.
-
The 965m model has been up on Xotic for a bit now, I'm sure other resellers have had it listed as well

The 960m is going to have a lot of headroom for tweaking in this machine

The is only one GE72 model at this time and it has the GTX 965M in it. The GE70 Apache Pro-681 was just released on the 12th. Its not the new body style but does have a GTX 960M.

It's still a mid-segment GPU so expect mediocre performance at best. -

Someone did clock the 860M up to 780M levels of performance, so it should have some tweaking room for the adventurous.
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Sure, but since it's a maxed out Maxwell the headroom for that is quite little.
-
Has anyone been able to get a 965M to hit 970M levels of performance?
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It will when maxed out (with an unlocked vbios) like the 970m can get close to the 980m.
-
The GTX 960M on this notebook were clock blocked (via vbios i guess), so with no OCing option the performance would still below the OC'ed 860M

960M VBIOS is integrated into the main MB BIOS, and its circuit is also integrated into motherboard.
It's still possible to modify it but it takes more hassle to work on. -
That's impossible, the 970M is like a 40% faster. I had the two of them at the same time and there is a big difference playing Far Cry 4 with the same graphic settings.
GeForce GTX 970M 1280 @ 924 - 1038 (Boost) MHz 192 Bit @ 5000 MHz
GeForce GTX 965M 1024 @ 924 - 950 (Boost) MHz 128 Bit @ 5000 MHz
You could overclock the 965M GPU to match the Boost of the 970M or even a bit further, but there is no way you con overcame the difference
in memory bandwith or the difference in SMMs ( 10 units vs 8 units ). -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You can but you have to run it up in the 1300-1350mhz region, it will still have a memory bandwidth disadvantage but it will depend on the game.
-
Been having GE72 with 960m for about 2 months now, and i'm pretty satisfied with it. Today finally have the courage to overclocked it, since core slider is maxed at +135 i decided to mod the vbios.
Adding core +328, memory +247(+495) and +200mV i got a great result, 4832 Firestrike Standard Score, 5298 Graphic Score.

What were your temps and noise like?
-
I always turned on the cooler boost when i play and benchmark so it's pretty noisy. I only test benchmark on it, firestrike with stock clock gpu usually maxed at 66c, with modded vbios i reached around 70c

You should not need to max the fan, try without it.
-
Ok, i will give it a try soon.
Edit:
Some more tests
No Cooler Boost (+200 MHz CPU)
Cooler Boost (+200 MHz CPU)
Playing Witcher 3 (underclocked CPU) and Throttled i don't know why, happened only on witcher.

If your CPU is throttling use intel XTU to find the reason.
-
I've checked with intel XTU still couldn't find the reason why it throttled.
TDP were only 34W far from 47W. Temps were only 74c far from 88c.
my guess is AC Adapter doesn't have enough power since it's only 150W
Can i use another AC adapter? GT72 Adapter maybe?Last edited: May 26, 2015 -
I have MSI GE60 2QE with 960M too. Can you send me your vBIOS? Can I install this? Will it work? This is screen from gpuz:
-
probably can, but it's not recommended. Your 960M on GE60 should have different hardware id than mine.

the best way is to mod your own vbios. (Do it with your own risk)
using this software
if you don't have the vbios just backup your vbios using GPU-ZCode:http://www.mediafire.com/download/ble2xre5wdynxt0/Maxwell_Bios_Tweaker_1.36.rar
and i'm using this guide
this is my modded vbios settingsCode:http://www.overclock.net/t/1522651/disable-boost-and-bake-in-max-game-stable-clocks-for-maxwell
http://imgur.com/u5OqyTA
and use this nvflash to bypass the certificate checks
Code:http://www.overclock.net/t/1521334/official-nvflash-with-certificate-checks-bypassed-for-gtx-970-980
-
I cant save my vBios. Gpuz says: Bios reading not supported on this device. Nvflash says somthing about eeprom error. Maybe some tutorial for this? Someone? help!

The VBIOS is very likely to be enclosed in the motherboard BIOS itself so it cannot be extracted using NVFLASH method. -
How about different method?
-
Yes, but can you send me your modded vBios? Big please
-
Even though i give you my modded VBIOS you still can't reflash it using nvflash, just like what kevin said.
You have to mod your motherboard BIOS and put VBIOS in your motherboard BIOS and reflash your motherboard BIOS.
The risk to brick the notebook is too high. -
ok I surrender

Svet is probably the only person who is capable of modding the BIOS/VBIOS for GE72.
