There is an offset value in the unlocked bios, one for haswell and one for broadwell depending on which one is soldered in.

Just confirming, you have the 4870HQ right?

Yes, I did try later tracking down a 5950hq version but they are pretty rare.

I have a modded bios.
Could You point me to the right Bios tab, where to set TDP value to higher point?
My Bios, here I set the turbo Max power to 200 like yours and Turbo time also.
Intel XTU also confirms my changes:
Could You please send more options to tweak. There are so much more tabs in Bios after I got it unlocked.
95% of them is new to me.

Looks like you just need to increase the throttle point in that menu and you are set
I will be interested to see how your chip performs.
-
OC'd my GTX960 reference card to the gpu limit. Increased my score a bit. Increasing voltage of the gpu did not make any more improvments though. Test hangs midway in second GPU test with +200 to the core. Altough +190 to core and +400mhz to mem is stable for benchmarking.
Altough CPU score is still 1000 points lower than my personal best. But it kept throttling to 2,9Ghz in CPU test. Starts fine with 3.6GHz for few seconds, but settels to 2,9Ghz at the end.
Also in Combined test the clock goes down from 3.5Ghz to 3.0Ghz. Temps reach 90-91 then.
At 84 it starts throttling CPU 1-2%, thats ok. but midway through CPU test it throttles -28% or something. I can't wait to get the dock modified and upgraded with more efficient airflows under the laptop. Hope to get CPU stable at 70-75C' on all 4 cores when done.

Maybe I am blind or just stupid? What menu You are refering to- bios? What is the "thing" i need to change? Or do You mean that the setting i have to change (throttle point) is in the same menu, but not currently in the picture?Last edited: Jun 1, 2016

Towards the bottom of that menu, the offset. Always a good idea to read through all the menus to familiarize yourself with the entire BIOS if you want to start playing at this level.
-
I thought i surfed through all the menus and their info, but at some of them there is so little info. If I could have the manual for this kind of bios and all the settings. Would be more helpful when fine tuning.
Also it was kind of late and rushed through the menus...., but thanks! Will look into it, when get back home from work. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Never a good idea to rush through! Set some time aside and have a close look.
No manuals when you are tweaking things like this, it's on you to understand what you are doing and get it right
-
Yeah, but its terrifying to enable and set some numbers, when You dont exactly know what they do to your laptop. Thats why the manual would help, but I guess I can search and google it...
But then You have to test every setting, to actually see if it worked or not. Very time consuming
Thats why it is great, to get tips and settings from someone else who has already gone through it - like You!
-
Is this it? Haswell/Broadwell TCC Activation offset? If so, then what to write there to raise throttling point?

Does anyone know when the MSI GS32 will come to Australia???
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Pop the offset to 0 for maximum headroom.
-
Thanks! Now it wont throttle, unless it is 97C and then also 1-2%.
Edit:
Still no help when CPU physix test is running. CPU downclocks itself even further now, around 2700mhz. FPS is ~21-22 in that test and CPU score is 7200 something.
It seems that temp goes all the way to 100C really quickly now, but no other real gains...Last edited: Jun 3, 2016 -

Go to the proper thread now, enough on this one. -
At CES 2016, it was reported that sometime later this year, MSI will release a new version of the GS40 Phantom that supports the new MSI dock and has a 960M card (instead of a 970M card in the current version). I like the idea of the GS32, but I'm holding off for the new version of the GS40, since it should be more powerful than the GS32 (and hopefully will handle heat just as well as the current version of the GS40).
-
Will anyone tell me when the MSI GS32 Shadow will be released in Australia? I'm a student who wants to buy this laptop for school/light gaming. Thanks!
-
With the recent reviews of the RBS and Core, I think I'm going to get this package. The 6500u has actually been getting pretty respectable scores and because the MSI dock uses full PCI-E and shouldn't require any additional encoding to take up bandwidth, it should work better than the Core. I would really prefer to go with a laptop that has
I remember reading/watching about that. My only concern is that the GS32 wasn't even hinted before it launched so it's possible that they abandoned the variant of the GS40 to create the GS32. It would suck but there hasn't been any more news of this alternate GS40 since CES. -

MSI tends to do that. The mini dock completely disappeared from existence since it was last announced and suddenly it popped out of nowhere.
-
Another thing to consider, assuming the plans for a dock-enabled version of the GS40 remain true: Thunderbolt 3. The GS32 doesn't have a Thunderbolt 3 port, and while the mini dock port negates much of the need for one, it would still be nice to have a free Thunderbolt 3 port available for things like 4K displays (especially seeing as neither the GS32 nor GS40 support HDMI 2.0). Assuming that the only changes MSI makes to the GS40 are adding a dock port and downgrading the graphics card to a 960M, the new GS40 version would be capable of connecting to an external GPU and allowing the user to have a Thunderbolt 3 port available for other uses at the same time.
In my mind, a new GS40 version with a 14" screen, quad core processor, 960M card, mini dock port, and Thunderbolt 3 port would blow away the GS32 with its 13.3" screen, dual core processor, 950M card, and mini dock port but no Thunderbolt 3 port. At least assuming the new GS40 manages heat well.
Still, who knows what MSI will end up changing with a new version of the GS40, assuming it's still in the works at all. Maybe MSI will end up stripping out the GS40's Thunderbolt 3 port, for instance, or downgrading it in some other way. Or maybe the price will see a big increase, considering that the current GS40 version by itself costs $1499 (US), while the GS32 + mini dock together cost only $100 more than that at $1599. If a new GS40 + mini dock ends up costing closer to $2000, then the GS32 + mini dock would certainly be a more affordable option that is still likely superior to the Razer Stealth + Core. -
Here's the dock enabled version of the GS40:

Thanks for the link! Looks like my hopes were right about what it's specs would be - they're definitely better looking than the GS32. And it has TB3!
Also, in case anyone is interested, someone started a thread about the new version of the GS40 here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/msi-gs-40-6qd.792609/ -

heheh. Thanks a lot for that post. I would have never forgiven myself for buying the msi gs30 had this come out later. +rep.
-
Good evening,
as you know there are upcoming GPU refreshed planned for that serie? -
With all this discussion about how a quad-core CPU is significantly superior to a dual-core, would it be worth picking up a GS30 over a GS32, especially at a discount? Amazon currently has the GS30 brand new for $921 (after $150 rebate). You might even be able to pick one up for $780, if you buy it used from Amazon Warehouse and are able to get the rebate.

That is an amazing deal. I would buy that in a heartbeat. With downvolting, the laptop can hold it's own against desktops with core i5s.

It's a clearance so if budget is tight then go for it, otherwise go for the latest and greatest. -
Well, looks like Amazon bumped their price back up to $1399. I'm guessing my post helped some people!

MSI GS 30 with GTX 1080 if anyone is interested. I'mma OC now to see what I get.

Any idea on what kind of battery life I can expect from the GS32 with a 965M (found it on GenTechPC's website) ? I only mean web browsing, and maybe streaming video.
-
Pretty high I guess. It will use the integrated graphics when doing those tasks. I am roughly estimating 8-10 hours.
-
Nice find! Especially considering it's priced the same as the 950M version.

Even with a 4 cell (47.36Whr) battery? I was thinking more like 4-6 hours, but I may be wrong. -
I get 4 hours in my GS30 so I assumed it should be more in the GS32.

That is good news. I think it may be worth waiting for the Pascal refresh of the GS32. That will give much better non-docked performance GPU-wise, and also better battery life if performing GPU-intensive tasks on the go.
Also, how is the keyboard on the GS32/GS30? Also want to know about the Touchpad. This is since if I buy one, I will be carrying it around everywhere and docking only at home.
If anyone can give me noise/temperature impressions of the GS32 it would be great.Last edited: Jul 23, 2016 -
It's very interesting that GentechPC has the GS32 paired with a 965m while every website, including MSI's main website, has the laptop listed with the 950m............I sent GentechPC's support an email hoping to confirm which GPU their GS32 has. If it really does have the 965m, I may not even bother waiting for the rehash of the GS40 to be released.

It's quite tempting given that a dock-compatible GS40 refresh seems to be never coming... The big thing that would hold me back though is the GS32'S dual core CPU. But please do report back on what GenTech says... would be good to know if this 965M version is real or not.
-
I'm concerned about it, too. But I do not want to wait forever for the new GS40 to come out even if it does. The Razer Blade Stealth has reportedly been doing well even with the dual-core processor and has been getting pretty respectable benchmarks. The biggest issue with the Core seems to be that you get a pretty significant performance drop when using the notebook's built in display (for both Stealth and 14" models) but that seems to be tied to the TB3 bandwidth. It shouldn't affect the GS32/GS40 since it's full PCI-E 3.0 x16.Prototime likes this.

Our apology, after checking with Ken and he confirmed that it was a typographical error. -
Damn! I was hopeful, too. I'll wait a bit to see what additional information comes out about any GS40 rehashes.
-
Alright I am done. I have put up with the overheating issues enough. The GS30 isn't really suited for hardcore gaming. I am getting 30FPS in GTA V 1440p maxed out in areas of high tessellation. I really didn't pay upward of $2k for 30fps. I am building a core i7 6700K rig next month. I commit seppuku.
-
I'm surprised to hear that, given that the GPU is external. Is the dock not handling the GPU's heat well, or is the problem that the CPU is overheating?
