Fixed. Sound came back after I did a EC reset.
Hello everyone,
I have had this laptop for a few years now, but today all of the sudden, I could not hear any sound from speaker and headphone.
Can anyone help me to troubleshoot this issue?
I'm feeling puzzled, but I will give out as many clues as possible.
- I have installed the latest audio driver on MSI support page
- From Device Manager, updating the sound drivers shows the drivers are up to date.
- When testing sound, the green bar moves
![]()
- The realtek property says the device is working properly
![]()
- "Play test sound", can't hear anything
- Uninstalling Nahimic 2, still can't hear anything
- A day before this happened, I have updated my EC firmware from MSI support page, although I don't remember if the sound stopped working immediately afterwards. (Most suspicious culprit?)
- Prior to this problem, I'm experiencing issue where my laptop does not switch to iGPU when I'm not running anything. -> thread
Is there anything else I should try? All comments are appreciated.

After further reading, I believe the issue was caused due to updating EC firmware without updating BIOS.
The problem is, my laptop originally came with Windows 8.1 and now I have upgraded it to Windows 10. And when I tried to update BIOS (which I downloaded from MSI website), it says the version is compatible.
Does anyone know how to find the version of BIOS I should download? (GS60, 2QE, Broadwell)
