I had very bad experience with MSI build quality. I owned 7 laptops in the past few years, usually giving away to my family when i update.
1 Dell laptop, another $200 Lenovo laptop and 5 MSI laptops.
The Dell and the Lenovo laptop look great and build quality is amazing.
5 out of the 5 of the MSI laptops suffered from broken and weak hinges, usually after a year and a half of usage those problems start to appear.
I had an 8 year dell laptop that still holds up great. Hell, even my $200 laptop have better build quality and strong hinges than the $2500 MSI laptop!! I'm very disappointed with MSI and I ceased to recommend any MSI laptop to anyone, but this new model sure is attractive to make me consider one last time.
My question to all MSI GS70 owners, how do you feel the build quality will hold up? Will the hinges break apart like ALL my previous MSIs?
-
I find the build quality of the GS70 absolutely superb. It's extremely similar to a Mac Book Pro. It has a single, wider hinge that helps reduce stress and it's enclosed in aluminum. There's only a couple places they use plastic. One of those places is where they placed the radios so the single isn't impaired by the aluminum and the second place is the screen bezel, which isn't too big a deal.

Actually the bezel at the lower part around the hinges broke with all my previous MSI laptops. i am afraid that the hinge will break or go weak or wiggle with time.
I don't beat my laptop but I was no light user either. Sadly my $200 Lenovo laptop that I use can take abusive usage, thrown around and everything holds up pretty nicely. None of the MSI laptops are cheap by any means and none live to the quality you should expect from such price tag. -
So why do you even want an MSI laptop if none live to your quality standards? I've had 3 MSI laptops, and not one of them has ever had a loose hinge or bezel. One of which traveled with me all around the world, and was backpacked to and from work every day over rough terrain on a daily basis for over a year. In fact I've actually never had a single laptop ever have a bezel or hinge issue. I know it can happen, and I would say it must be bad luck or an actual defect specific to a model of laptop. But 5 would have to either be some very serious bad luck issues, or some gross negligence or abuse. Maybe invest in a tough book if you really need something that sturdy. Just my humble opinion.

i don't think its bad luck, i checked other people online and most suffered the same. The only reason I use an MSI laptop is because of the screen. very good for my eyes and doesn't give me any eye strain compared to all other laptops.
But I guess I should pass on this one, I just feel bad that I used to recommend MSI in the past and none had good luck with build quality. Remember me when the hinges break (and it will its not luck)

There were a few issues a while back with the hinges on the GT series (not huge numbers but a few) otherwise I have not seen much else about it.

I have a GT70 that I will RMA due to a hinge breaking a few weeks ago. I use mine as basically a desktop replacement, so closing the lid hasn't been a priority to get it fixed. My reseller helped me get the RMA set up very quickly.
It's my first MSI and I love the performance along with the smart placement of the "windows" key.
It's doubtful I would go back to another brand. I'm actually considering ordering another MSI since we need one more gaming notebook in the house.
This one is tempting!
MSI GT70 2OD-039US Dragon Edition 2 NV GTX780M, Intel 4th Gen Haswell CPU - GenTech PC -
the build quality of msi is in question
-
Phew! going all out with performance huh?
Man I like that dragon edition color and design of back plate

Go big or go home, right? lol.. At the same time I am on the fence, considering the GTX680 since it's a beast, too.
I wish the 800 series cards were out tomorrow, because I'd have no reservation then.
This is the other i might order,, 0NE-446US . MSI GT70-0NE-446US nVidia GTX680M 4GB GDDR5 Windows 8 I need to decide this week.
I also hope the hinge issue isn't something I have to deal with again.. Might have been a fluke with one bad part? Who knows! -
800 series are still a while a head, and 680m and 780m offer a huge jump in performance that we can stay relevant for a while
both GPUs are exceptional in gaming prowress, but if you are not interested in overclocking, I say go for the 780m, it overs around 25% performance improvement that varies per game, and will generally give you the extra frames for the demanding games.
MSI GS70 also suffers from bad hinges?
