I'd personally go with the GT60.
I'm also preparing for college this fall and I'm about to get a GT60. A 17" is definitely difficult to carry around. There is no difference in terms of specs between the two, just the size.
-
except the one less usb port. I'm tired of lugging around a 17" so going the 15.6 route this time around. That couple inches wider makes a big difference when travelling.

I'm looking at maybe getting the GT70.
One thing I notice is that they do not come with a bag? I am kind of spoiled from Asus always including a nice bag with there laptops. Anybody have some good bag recommendations perhaps current GT783 owners can key in as its probably the same size. -
I am definitely considering the GT60, needed a laptop for school, yet don't want to bring my desktop. BTW will these come in bare bone editions? It could save me a few bucks.
P.S. New to the forum, nice to meet you all. -

Yes, the barebones are already released, GT60= MS-16F3, GT70= MS-1762 -
The MS-16F3 definitely does not have the same physical casing, and not the same CPU (ivy bridge), also not the same graphic card either.... Am I missing out on something?
*At least I'm basing on the GenTech's website -

Same physical chassis different color scheme and chassis options. Ivy Bridge - 3rd Generation Intel Core Processors are not launched yet, when launched it will be available on the barebone same as the branded. Branded is not available as Ivy is not launched yet. The VGA on the barebone models are 1.5GB and the branded 3GB. Barebone and branded support both 2nd and future 3rd generation core processors. -

I wonder if shops are going to offer an HD7970M upgrade option....

On the barebones? Probably not.

On GenTech's website, under the backpack section, it includes the default as 'MSI backpack included,' with a low res image of a nice-looking backpack with discernable MSi logo on it.
On the order of the updated downloads section, it mentions in the horribly translated manual that the laptop will definitively feature Ivy Bridge "quad/dual core processors" with "up to 8 mb of cache."

It's kinda funky was looking at it now, some of them say they do come with a backpack and some do not.
Look at the MSI GT70-0NC-011US witch is the one I want and it has no bag included in the specs.
I do not know why it would come with some and not others so it maybe just a listing error. -
NDA on IB was lifted: I'm salivating..
MSI GT70 gaming laptop review -- Engadget -
Now that reviews are showing up for the GT70, its making me want this laptop even more. I am just waiting for the MSI GT70-0NC-011US to have the GTX675M instead of the GTX670M. Heck I would even take it with the GTX580M. The other possibility is, just go with the GTX670M and change it out later for the GTX680M (if compatible, if not, change it out for the GTX580M).
I wonder why the GT60 has an eject button on the optical drive and the GT70 has the eject button on the quick button control panel below the screen and not on the optical drive. < I saw this in the CeBit shots and now again on the actual model that shipped to all the reviewers. This was one thing I did NOT like about the MSI GT783R-658US that I thought MSI was going to change with these new models. Sucks you have to open the laptop to eject a disc. I keep my laptop closed when I am at my desk and use an external monitor. -
The 680M will be MXM 3c, right? All MXM 3 is backwards/forwards compatible with all other MXM 3 slots, so as long as MSi doesn't switch everything up in the internals of the GT70 from what they've always done and go with the embedded graphics card option, which I think we've seen enough pictures of to debunk, you should be able to fit in a GTX 680M, and possibly most of the GTX 7xx series later. The only advantage of the higher MXM spec is extra bandwidth that you will probably not ever peak close to with base MXM 3 in a laptop.
-
Good info Moomooplater, thank you. I think I will most likely go with the GT70 -11 with the GTX670M and later switch it out for a GTX680M.
-
That review with the complaint about the screen has me worried. I wanted a gaming laptop that I could also use at work(with 3 monitors). If the viewing angle is bad going to have to look elsewhere. I wonder if this is with the Ultra Bright screen or if it would solve the issue?

Get it from a reseller and get them to fit a high gamut screen.

Hello
Currently I own a GT780DX . Planning on selling it to my friend.
Some questions about GT60:
1. Does it support optimus?
2. Can I upgrade to a dual mSATA in the future from a branded unit?
3. Any difference in speaker and sound quality vs the previous generation (GT780DX GT683DX) ? -
1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Its is better afaik, if not the same. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
1. No it does not.
2. If you get the right bracket.
3. No difference. -
Pretty sure they support Optimus:
-
How come? A reseller has confirmed this before in a recent discussion on the forums.
On Gentech's, Optimus is supported.
GenTech PC - MSI GT60 0NC-004US 15.6 inch GTX670M 3GB
-----
Not sure if Audio Boost counts as better sound.
-----
Edit:
Thank you for providing the quotes, 5482741. -
GT60 should support Optimus, it is an nVidia technology available with the new nVidia graphics cards.
Meaker is correct, you will need the correct adapter for swapping to the dual mSATA drives.
No difference in sound as far as I could tell, still excellent quality for a laptop. -

Haha, oops, read the GT780DX and missed the GT60 part.

I am waiting to buy the top sepc GT70 in UK but was just waiting for the price to go down. The price has now moved from £1699+VAT to £1915+VAT. I was hoping to keep it within £1500, do you think they may take a price drop once the other gaming laptop competitors have released theirs?
I been waiting since Jan to get a new laptop, and starting to get really anxious waiting longer lol. -
Ekey i just watched a youtube video review about the gt60 done by Xoticpc and it was very detailed and showed the monitor at many angles. check it out. didnt look like a problem too me. also as said you could always upgrade through a reseller.

When I do my unboxing I'll take high res pics of monitor from multiple angles.
I'll review the GT70 same way I reviewed the G73.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/asu...9400-viciousxusmcs-ultimate-g73jh-review.html
I am very picky about screens since I do photoshop on my laptop regularly and I have nice IPS monitors at home to compare against as a benchmark. -
That's one detailed review, are you going to do any sort of video review by any chance? Also I have a little request if you don't mind, I wish you can show how much of a turbo does that "turbo drive" button does. It'll be great if you can give some data on how much it improved, such as the how much did the core speed changed on video card and/or CPU. Thanks a bunch! =]
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah I will be doing a turbo/non turbo bench.
I'll do a cpu test with w/prime and gpu test w 3DMarkVantage to show the difference.
I'll watch core speed during wprime with cpuz to see what it jumps to and the gpu speeds with gpuz during vantage.
Ill do max temp tests with occt and furmark and test normal cooling and the "turbo cooling"
I need to start picking new age games with built in benchmarks to test as well. So far only Dirt 3 is on my list lol.
