Ok so I just got the game Borderlands and am having pretty poor performance with it. I have to turn shadows off and have turned a couple other settings down, and with no action I get a solid 50-60 fps, but when there's action, it drops down to 30-40 (lower if shadows are on). I also noticed quite a few stutters during gameplay, even though fraps was saying the fps wasn't really changing much.

The big thing that concerns me is that when I exited the game and looked at HWMonitor (it was running in the background during gameplay), my max gpu temp was 84 degrees Celsius and my 2 cpu cores were 84 and 86 degrees Celsius. I'm not that worried about the gpu temp, but the cpu temps really took me by surprise, as it has not heated up that much before. Thoughts?

So does anyone think these temps are a problem? Now that I've been running Borderlands without Fraps, the max cpu temp is 81 degrees Celsius.

Hmm...ok. Any gx640 users know if these are normal temps?

No it seems within the borders for what temps could be. I would not worry, have You updated drivers and vbios?

Yep, everything is up to date. I've only had it for about 3 months...do you think enough dust could have accumulated to make a difference?

Also, idle temps are around 45 for the cpu and 48-50 for the gpu, in case anyone was wondering.

Okay, but I'm not really sure about how to do that. I'll google a guide or something. That wouldn't void my warranty would it?

I encountered a few new things tonight, though. I'm wondering if they're significant:

The first thing is when I started Borderlands up today, every once in a while the sound and game would stutter for a fraction of a second. It was getting annoying, so I restarted my computer and tried again. This time, everything seemed to be fine. When I quit after a couple hours, I checked HWMonitor, and it said my max cpu temps were 83 and 80 degrees. Nothing out of the ordinary. Then I closed out and tried to switch eco mode off using the touchpad. This is when things got weird. Before switching to balanced mode, the computer just froze for about 7-10 seconds. It eventually unfroze, but then my mouse was lagging as I moved it around the screen. My computer eventually got out of it, but it was still kind of disturbing.

Any help on this would be really appreciated.

Edit: Nevermind about the Borderlands stuttering issue; I just realized that was happening because my computer was trying to back up my files in the background. Still wondering about the weird computer lag I was dealing with afterward, though.

no idea as i have never used eco :p I replaced the TIM on the cpu and i have had dramatic drops in temp. I am also waiting for my copper shim to come in the mail so I can do the mod and lower my gpu temps :)

Put your machine into power saver, the 5850 should be able to run the game on max well on your settings (I swear i could max out borderlands at 1080p on me 4850 without aa) but find out anyhow if its your temps causing issues.

I put my comp into power saver, and Borderlands seemed to run fine. I played for almost an hour, and the max temps for the cpu were 77 and 80, with the gpu sitting at 82 max. The game ran fine and everything was fine when I quit - no weird freezes or anything. Thoughts?

hehe depends on how clean Your room is. But yes always make sure the airvents are free´. Your idle are a bit better than mine. It seems to me as if its a software problem more than handware. Have You tried reinstall?

It isn't just Borderlands; Bad Company 2 gives me the same temps. Should I use some compressed air to clean out the vents?

I just remembered a couple things that might be related to what I've been experiencing. First of all, sometimes the temperature of the cpu will spike a few times, starting out at around 45 degrees, quickly jumping to around 55, and going back to mid 40s again a second later. This all happens when the computer is idle. Also, every once in a while, my cursor lags - it will freeze and then jump to the spot it is supposed to be. Whenever this happens (which is rarely), it only happens once and then goes away. Also, my fan will sometimes increase in speed and then go back to normal a few seconds later, even while idling or surfing the web, although this is probably just due to a component reaching a certain temp.

    Are these things significant?

Edit: I just finished surfing the web and watching some Red vs Blue videos online, and during that time, the cpu had gotten up to 70 degrees Celsius! The gpu had gotten up to 62 degrees. This is really starting to worry me.

I sincerely recommend you to enjoy your notebook instead of constantly searching for real and (imaginable) problems on every corner.

Haha, I think that's probably a good idea. It's just that I've had 2 laptops fry because of overheating issues, so I guess I'm a little paranoid. I think I'll calm down now

This a very solid and well priced laptop which i believe has a few minor problems that can be solved. You should be happy with what you've got. At least you dont need to worry about GSOD and PSOD....

I would recommend thermal pasting your CPU, because temps do seem fairly high for a CPU, then again I'm not sure on what temps the new Core i5/i7's are safe to reach. My C2D never breaks 62 degrees C. Your GPU sounds about right though, they often run 80-90 degrees with stock thermal paste.
