im pretty sure newegg does not ship internationally as i have attempted to try before and by the sounds of it, it seems to me as if it is a driver problem. What cats are you on? ATi's drivers are really inconsistent and i recommend to stick to one driver you find stable. I found that 10.4 to 10.6 were pretty stable and were served me well.

The catalyst 10.7 drivers work just fine as well, I haven't have any issues with it.
Yet... -
Ok then, thanks for the help guys, I decided not to give up - I'm going to have my new MSI GX740 whatever it takes -
I saw that there is two models for this. Should I get the i5 with 2.4ghz or should I get the i7 with 1.6ghz if my main purpose is for gaming and graphics/game programming? And I also read that there is serious heating problems with the vbios which can be fixed by updating it but is that easy to do?

It's so low and unprestigious to sell a used product as new. Best for you is to get your money back. I also bought the notebook from a Czech retailer, but it was in a double sealed box - untouched from the factory.
This is why those stickers say "factory seal", "quality control", "do not accept if seal is broken" etc. etc. -
-
Ironically, I live in Prague and I bought my GX640 from the same CzechComputer
. LCD did not have the protective cover, only a small plastic sticker on the msi letters below the screen and a big plastic sticker on the outside of the lid.
Also, if the box wasn't sealed when you bought it, there is a chance that computer stood as an showcase model in the salon. In any case - it's best for you to get your money back and place a bet on ebay, I think -
My shipment is going to arrive soon today. Hopefully no nonsense comes with the laptop (it was a good deal so Im kind of afraid something's wrong with it).
Why is flashing the vBios important with this guy? It doesn't come with the latest version? This is a long thread and "Search this Thread" isn't working very well. -
Guys, I almost thought I'm not gonna get one for me (all sold in CZ and the replacement has GTS250 with slower i7), but 1 (one!) retailer received shipment of 5 pieces today. I booked the last one and I'm gonna get it tomorow ("o' holy s#!t I'm one lucky motherf***er"). I hope this one works, the seller told me it's completely new, untouched and they'd have marked it as "opened/used" if used. So I'm rejoining this thread and asking the same question as poster above me: Why is flashing vBios of the card important? What happens if I let it be as it is from the retailer?
-
I ordered a GX 740 today. I'm getting the i5 version clocked at 2.4Ghz.
I haven't had a new computer since 2005, so I'm really excited to be able to play some new games and encode an .avi in less than 4 hours

After the update, load temp does not go beyond 90 degree so far, and my idle temp is now at 55 degree +/- 2. Hope this helps! Just don't brick the laptop. -

Hello again, well week ago I was talking about my faulty MSI GX740X which I have returned and had a discussion with other user about quality of sellers in Czech Republic. The CzechComputer (one of the biggest sellers here) returned me the faulty laptop with "You deleted the Windows Recovery partition, therefore the notebook cannot be revived to the state it was before we sold it to you, and you have used pirated software on the notebook." Of course I use official and legal version of Windows, since I came on my high school. We have MSDN AA, which gives us all Microsoft products for free for non-commercial use. I installed my version of W7 Pro without all the crap and of course deleted completely useless 12GiB partition with OEM recovery. I also didn't insert my unique key and my name, thereby I just installed a trial version of W7, because it will require activation after 30 days of usage, thats what I returned to them. So what is the truth? I just used software on my notebook, decided to return it in 14 day period, so where is the problem? Should I contact my lawyer, or is it really true I can't do what I want with my laptop? What if I just wanted for some reason to try if the disk handles all its capacity and therefore had to delete everything on it (I didn't but you get the point)?
And the last thing... Would somebody be so kind and send me a PM if you have MSI recovery partition still able to work? What I need from you is to use some partition backup like Acronis, or whatever and upload it to some public storage (rapidshare). -
Hi everyone,
New member here. Just wanted to introduce myself. After 6 good years of service from my dell inspiron 8700 (it's still running fine!) I decided to purchase a msi GX740 i7 from ncix last month.
A day after receiving the laptop I got all kinds of blue screen crashes related to bad memory sticks, I had to RMA it to ncix for a replacement. Well yesterday the replacement laptop arrived and is running great! CPUID shows cores idling at 52degrees, gpu at 65degrees without a bios flash (The first laptop's cores were idling at 68degrees).
Conclusion, everything is running smoothly on this laptop and I can't be happier!
Also I've been back reading this thread, my vBios version is BR.36532.018, someone said it's the old bios version. Is there a reason why my laptop idles at 48-52c without a bios flash? Thanks! -
I just got my GX740 and I have a question.
Can I reformat it using a retail Windows 7 DVD and my OEM CD Key that is on the bottom of the laptop? -
-
-
Oh I see. Thanks for the clarification. -
Anyone running the 8.732 drivers from the official MSI website?
How do they fare? -
-
I succeeded. You need to make a bootable flash drive, copy all the vBIOS update files onto it, reboot, boot into DOS from the bootable flash and then update the vBIOS.
-
-
does the 8.732 display drivers from the MSi website have CCC, and how is its performance?
-
Not sure about the 8.732, but I updated to 8.762 from ATI's website and it does have CCC.
-
I have 8.762 as well, but now my card only shows 5800 series instead of 5870, and my performance in 3dmark is only around 11800.(E7405)
-
Oh then I have no idea.
I have a question concerning memory. Can the GX740 support 8gigs of Ram? And what type of DDR3 SDRam does it use, 1333 or 1066?
Thanks -
3DMark Score 11917
SM 2.0 Score 5241
SM 3.0 Score 5900
CPU Score 2622
Doesn't this seem a bit low? -
which program are you using to benchmark? 3DMark Vantage or 3Dmark06? Ill test it out and post results
-
3dmark06 the free version.
-
Nevermind the Memory question. Found my answers.
I'm installing 3dmark06 now, will post results in a bit. -
3DMark score: 12266
SM 2.0 score: 5114
SM 3.0 score: 5922
CPU score: 3014
although we wait for 3DMark11 since we run DX11? -
-
Yeah I have the I7
-
Not sure if this issue has been addressed, I had set my gx740 power settings to never sleep, but sometimes I fall asleep watching a movie, and when I wake up I see that the laptop still enters sleep mode, any reason/fix for this?
Thank you -
Hi folks,
as you can see, i have a medion akoya X7811. A decent barebone of the GX740.
Have you also experienced a temperature increase, if you plug in a usb device, like a mouse, usb stick or so?
My cpu idles at a range of 42-46°C without any device connected. The fan runs at lowest step. But just after plugging in my usb mouse, the temps raise at about 5°C on all cores and the THRM one. Now the fan is also 1 step higher (and louder), i call it step 2
Imo it's a result of a missing switch to a deeper cstate while the usb controller is in use.
Wouldn't this be on all platforms (other hardware) then? E.g. my Acer 4810 idles at 30°C, with or w/o usb device
Do you think, flashing the newest bios of GX740 would be fatal?
The X7811 has PM55 instead of HM55.
Thx -
Ordered from NCIX(Canada) on August 23.
Came with old vbios. Updated - OK.
Here are some answers I wasn't able to find on the Web:
-It comes with 1333Mhz ram, no bag, no mouse.
-No dead pixels for me
-Very happy with picture image and brightness is completely OK for me. I even use 90% setting (daytime indoors). Resolution and colors are good.
Battery Eatter v2.7 at default settings lasted about 1:40. Read guides before using it because my windows went to hybernation on 5% charge and it spoiled the results.

Windows 7 experience index:
Processor: 6.9
Memory(RAM): 7.4
Graphics: 7.2
Gaming graphics: 7.2
Primary hard disk: 5.9
Ati Video Driver v10.8
3D Mark Vantage score: 8340
CPU: 10212
GPU: 7860.
Overclock is unavailable in ATI CC. Maybe after updating vbios, don't know for sure.
Absolutely no keyboard flex during normal use.
oZone Fumark with extreme burning mode: max 95 C (hot room temp) So it's the maximum temp you'll ever see.
Don't hear any difference in subwoofer performance after enabling movie mode, but sound is Ok for me.
Used Acronis Disk Director to repartition HDD.
Overall I'm very happy with this purchase, taking into consideration 100$ USD mail-in rebate from MSI. -
Are you sure about the 1333 Ram? I called MSI tech and they told me gx740 runs 1066.

The RAM used depends on the CPU. i3 series and i5 series CPUs can use 1066 DDR3 RAM, whereas i7 series can use 1066 or 1333 DDR3 RAM.
-
Yes, mine comes with i7 CPU. Here are stock memory specs:

I have i7 as well, cpu-z shows the same stats as your pic, just different brand. Weird I guess msi gave me the wrong info.
-
What do we use to control fan speed? I use MSI afterburner but it doesn't seem to change the fan speed.
and what are your temps under load?
Mine is around 80-85 normally... -
-
So the ATI Overdrive's fan button doesn't work?
it says 30, but the sound of the fans changes all the time. -
there is only 1 fan :/
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
The vast majority of laptop fans cannot be controlled by the user, despite what programs like Overdrive or Afterburner would have you believe.
-
Does anyone get flickering or shimmering shadows in some games? Or Shadow pop-in?
Pretty sure it's caused by the game, since this is the second computer I've seen it on.
