Oh...
Don't tell me you checked by alt tabbing lol.
Download MSI Afterburner and use the on-screen display.
It shows the temps in-game on your screen.

ok, thank you ill do it. Didnt know that msi afterburner had that option such a nub lol

guys what u say about GX740-235US ?
Newegg.com - MSI GX740-235US NoteBook Intel Core i5 450M(2.40GHz) 17.0" Wide SXGA+ 4GB Memory 320GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 Broadway XT
the only difference between 079US and 235US is cpu i think. so is it good for $1150 ?
and lenovo y560 with i7-740QM cpu and 5730 gpu is another option for $900.
what u say ? i ve 2 days to buy it , need urgent advice !!! -
I think they made an upgrade of the cooling system(079US -235US ) (i m not sure)
-
So which one has better cooling system ?
-
I'll add wow temps later i had no time today to play >.< -
Did you make any modifications other than the vBIOS? -
And no, no other mods than the vBIOS -
But this is not an accurate representation at all because it doesn't reach 99% all the time and there's the CPU test in between for cooldown.
In Dirt2 running at 99% for 10-20 minutes at a time it gets to 80 for me. -
get the MSI
5730 is nothing compared to 5870. -
-
Run Furmark in native resolution, post fx to check max. gpu temps.
xtreme burn at your own risk. -
MW2 and NFS Shift confirms this theory.
When I didn't have Vsync in MW2 my temps would get to 83 at 99% usage.
In Shift, one of the levels featured only one other car and I was getting somewhere like 70 FPS with 99% usage, temps again at 83.
Dirt 2 99% usage for 30 minutes and only goes up to 81 with about 40 fps. -
But now i m worried about overheating issue. wondering if it ll come with updated vbios or i ll ve to update. i dunno... and everyting ll be solved with update ? i m not sure...

Even if it doesn't come with the vBIOs update you can do it easily by yourself anyways.
Edit: it seems like different games push my system to different temps.
Dirt2 makes it 80 at times, while BC2 only seems to push it to 76. -

Mobility chips are engineered to tolerate much higher temperatures due to the confined spaces in which they are installed. 90 degrees is a high temperature but still within tolerances. If your temps are getting to 100 degrees or more, then you should worry.

That's a high score, I only get 7900 -

Elemir is your laptop all working fine now?
-
Do you have any dirt2 or JC2 benchmarks? -

-
Do you have that score for comparison?
Thanks for your time. -

Has anyone experienced terrible bad latency issues? i've tried the tests at Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test and i have stupid latency like 580 or more when another laptops in my home have like 80 ms with the same server. The issue is both with wifi and wired and it goes worst when i try to play online games. I can play them wired, not as good as i was able with my old laptop (talking about latency) but with the wifi it becomes impossible i have such high latency that the server just kick me out :s
I dont know if thats a driver issue or a SO issue, i have instaled the latest drivers from msi web page so i dont know... -
I don't have a problem with latency, but maybe try restarting your router/modem and make sure your settings are good.
-
Thanks to Bearclaw. That webcam problem is solved now.

Good to hear, it was a longshot attempt but glad it worked.

Getting weird BSOD's lately. Not really a pattern but it has happened the two previous nights and have never happened before.
First was when it was shutting down, lol. WhoCrashed reported ntokrnl.exe crashed, which is just a generic BSOD.
Second happened after I exited Just Cause 2. That was a directx bsod it seems.
All really random, none of them are happening in game either... -

There is one guy who really modded his GX740 a lot, nando4 showed me this link:
Google Translate -
Thanks for the link, it seems like he did a pinmod to permanently OC his cpu hehe.
Does anyone know why the card doesn't downclock to 100/150 no matter what OC I do? It can be 705/1000 and it still goes to somewhere like 405/1000 -

My latency issue was a win issue ^^ just reinstalled and working fine
-
It doesn't happen if I go with stock clocks, only when overclocking. -
I really don't have an issue with it, since I only use my OC clocks when playing, and then I roll back to stock when i'm finished. -
Mmm I'm just using the MSI afterburner's automatic profile management... have to tweak it so it works...
Edit:
Haha success! Now it runs 100/150 when in 2D and 850/1060 on 3d.
Another edit:
I get odd fan turning on problem as well now... GPU idle at 45 CPU idle at 40 and the fans just randomly turn on. -
How does Starcraft 2 play on the i5 version of the GX740/E7405? Is the i5-430m sufficiently capable of drawing the best out of the 5870? I'm considering getting the GX740 but I'm on a student budget and will therefore opt for the cheaper i5 CPU. I'm worried that the 430m will prove to be a bottleneck for the 5870, but hopefully experienced users here will shed more light on this. I will only play Starcraft 2 on my laptop and nothing else. Is 40FPS on ultra possible on this machine? Is the E7405 nearly identical to the GX740?
Much thanks. -
Will not be a bottleneck.
Your 5870 will be a bottleneck before the processor will.
Plus, you can choose to upgrade it to a better dual core or a quad core down the line when they're cheaper -
That's good to know. I was worried about the processor not being able to handle the 5870 with SC2 at highest settings.

Is it possible to remove/replace the keyboard? Spilled some juice in the numpad area, now some buttons are "sticky". If possible, please give me instructions

can someone link me a guide of fully disassembling for gx740?
thanks -
Disregard.

Hi, first timer here and I'm planning to buy the MSI GX740 tomorrow in one of my local retailer store(ncix). I was reading this thread early and the first thing I noticed many people was required to do an flash vbios.
My question I wanted to ask is, what are the updated working vbios files which gives the best temp drops that everyone is currently using and any instructions to doing so? This is the first "gaming" laptop I will be purchasing and I'm very new to this bios mod as I've usually just used them the way they are out of the box.
Thanks -
Hehe you're picking it up from the sale I see.
I bought the E7405 a about 2 months ago for $1149, also from NCIX when I was back in Alberta (love the 5% GST).
Anyways, make sure you get a USB flash drive, and follow the instructions. When it's time to do it make sure you plug it into the dedicated USB port not the eSATA combo port.
Then report back to us with your new temps! (BTW Don't alt tab to check it, use MSI Afterburner's OSD or GPU-Z sensor log or HWMonitor's max/min readings) -
Hi....
I've recently bought a gx740 (eu version, i5 450m)...gpu 5870m. I've a problem with antialiasing.
So far i've tried these games:
JustCause2demo, Company of Heroes, The Witcher, MafiaIIdemo, GTAIV.
In gtaIV there's no option for AA, so no problem, MafiaII works fine with AA....the other games don't work well.
I installed the last catalyst drivers, 10.10 (before i had the "official" ones from msi, i think 8.something)...
With msi drivers i had problems in game menu, too....now with 10.10, just during the game.

Any resolution or setting i tried with AA enabled (2x,4x,8x... no matter what), it results in this problem. Disabling the AA, the games work just fine.
I don't know....MafiaII works well with AA....i don't think it's a broken GPU.
I opened a thread in the official msi forum....
I link it....so you can see all my messages...
MSI GX740 antialiasing problem
Do you have similar problem? -
Okay first screenshot in JC2 is normal because that's just the film grain.
But the other two definitely have something wrong.
I play JC2 with 2xAA and everything else highest/on without SSAO and I don't see any weird spots.
In the catalyst control there should be an option for different types of anti-aliasing in the 3d settings so try other ones see if that helps. -
Tried MultiSample AA, Adaptive Multi Sample AA, Super Sample AA....same problem.
If i select the AA from the catalyst control center (instead of the menu game) disabling the "use application settings" option.... seems to work....
(in the preview i can see the problem....but not during the game)
honeslty, i didn't see any real difference in game.... but anyway, i'm not an expert...
Do you think enabling the AA in this way is ok? Is it a real 4x AA?
Edit.
No....i checked.....actually, the aa is turn off in this way.
