I opened the laptop case 3 times, now I will open it again and try ...
about grounding wires did you mean the wire which connected with Fan screw or there are another one ?
are there a way to start the machine direct from the motherboard (like the desktop)?

    thank you for your help

Laeth76 you should take a picture of this wire and post it here, it would be easier to see which wire your talking about.

Could You post the vBIOS file which You've used? I'm thinking of the same upgrade, with a Clevo card.

This wire does not need to be connected, and it should be covered with tape or something to prevent it from channeling energy somewhere else. I found mine tucked away with plastic and tape around the tip.

I also had the same problem with your images, I only was able to see one.

Are you asking for the 6970m vbios or the 6990m?

or you could get a intel 6300 or bigfoot 1003 for better wireless signal (maybe).

Did you take it completely apart? That would be a strange thing to do since you can access everything from the bottom.

If you removed the power button, note that there are 2 types of ribbon cable connectors MSI uses. They look the same, but 1 needs the ribbon UNDER a brown latch and the other type needs it OVER, otherwise it wont work.

Here you go Marecki_clf, sorry about the wait. One 6970m vbios from dell m17xR3. Nice work with the heatsinks, this shows how much more clearance there is compared to the job I did. I also plan on opening up the back plate similar to how you did it to improve air flow.

The 180 watt targus arived a few days ago, and I have had no issues with power anymore. So battlefield 3 and unigen 2.5 now run without shutting down my machine :) . Battlefield 3 is now my biggest benchmark now, as it has pushed my temps past 103 C in gaming  . A good indicator I still need more work on the cooling system.

I'm wondering how is it possible, that with 3DMark11 Your GPU reaches 80C, yet with BF3 it reaches 103C. 23C difference is a bit awkward here.

Congrats on Your PSU purchase and thanks for the vBIOS :).

HAHA, i knew it is possible to put 6970 in. Listen guyz, on Alienware forum where i sit now most of the time, people moded Vbios of this cards by lowering the voltage (using RBE Vbios editor). This program also lets you define fan speed at certain temperature. So you should check this as well.
    heres one of the links
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/576540-6970m-undervolting.html
So here people are saying about lowering the voltage from 1.1v to 0.91v stable, but later they find out that this may work for some people and for some not. Therefore stable voltage for 99%of users was set at 0.96v. And it should work for all of you as well.

Dont forget to get some IC Diamond 7, as this is propably the best thing available.

    GOOD LUCK GUYZ :)

And I thought 90 degrees was dangerous. Are you mad? You need to get some liquid nitrogen in there or something. Seriously though, make sure the majority of the graphic card is making contact with the heatsink - with thermal pads and Akasa thermal tape. The small heatsink really doesn't help :(

For me Bad Comany 2 was the most demanding game, even surprassing BF3. o_O I think I hit max temps of 92 on my OCed 6990M and 90 on the 920XM. They do take a beating well though. Thankfully Skyrim is less intensive and only hits low 80s at max.

Maybe because 3DMark11 isn't as intensive? BF3 eats up a lot of CPU as well, and with one fan cooling both you do the math.

Lowering voltages is debatable. If you are gonna mess with the vbios, always make a backup of your current and always flash in DOS.

Fan speeds mods on vbios won't help us unfortunately. That's because the only fan is controlled by the CPU temps that are set in the bios, with an unlocked bios you can change them. So whilst your CPU stays cool so does the fan, and the graphics card may melt in the background without you noticing.

I just received an unlocked BIOS for the GX740 (courtesy of our fellow NBR user, Xonar, best regards here), which allows user to adjust fan control settings manually. There are also tonnes of other options unlocked in this BIOS. So far it has been working flawlessly for me for over 24hrs. Anyone interested? :)

First maybe look into your ATI/AMD drivers. Then I would maybe consider flashing to the dell vbios.

An update to the cooling issue, as by removing the bottom cover with the Laptop cooler on full blast, my temps have dropped. 81 C is the highest while playing Battlefield 3.

So I have done it! Clevo 6970M (with Dell m17x R3 vBIOS) is now working in my GX740. Picture is ok, HDMI works, performance is magnificent.
There's only one thing that bothers me: I can't get the fan to work at full speed!
It responds only to the temperature changes in the CPU (yet still it won't run in full mode, even in Linpack).

Any advice on how to solve this?

Hello, i have the same Card too from Clevo, but when the card is built-in my Notebook, the LED from my Powersupply goes off, when the powerconnecter plug-in. I have the x7811 with 120W powersupply.

With Ati 5870M Original-Card no Problem.

I have the original-Bios from Medion, not MSI.

Do you have any Idea what can it be?

I think that You need a more powerful PSU. 120W is not enough.

Soory to dig up such a old thread, but I am a owner of Akoya X7811 with 5870m, nowdays 6970/6990m are really cheap, so I want to buy a 180W psu and change the GPU to 6990m (7970 would be too expensive for this rig and limited by the cpu). I have questions before doing it.

Do you need any kind of mechanical alterations of the heat sink, I mean: drilling, cuting it etc. to fit it to the new gpu? (not counting the small heat sinks that I need to glue to the cooling system.

Since this is Akoya from Medion it is expected that it is a less quality build, will it hold with bigger power consumption (i am planning to undervolt the 6990m)?
I am asking beacause I can buy 6970m instead of 6990m.

What other things I should have? Like: thremal paste, extra small heatsinks etc?

Just be aware of the lifespan issues the 6970M and 6990M have been having.

    Hi,

Congratulations on your success. I myself have a GX740-79us of which the 5870 has just been dead (right after the warranty expired). I ordered an 5870 from an alienware on ebay and installed it but nothing came up but a grey screen when I powered it up.

I noticed you had to flash the Vbios from Dell to make your update work. I wonder if doing the same will solve this problem for me as well, and how did you doing without bricking your laptop. Please help me! I'm desperate because no one from the local repair shops can fix my this issue and since MSI has discontinued this brand, I cannot find any MSI 740gx replacement parts on the internet.

    Thank you
