Is the MSI page generally behind on driver versions? I see you're already suggesting the Nvidia 387.92, but the MSI page for the Titan 427 (GTX 1070) still lists the 384.94 from August. I guess the Titan and Titan Pro could be optimized for different drivers?

I can see that for a video card, since it's pretty similar across implementations. But should I be messing with jumping to the latest wifi or audio drivers from the manufacturer before they've been vetted by the OEM? Worst case I can just roll back, I guess
I didn't bother reimaging mine because I really didn't see any bloatware on it from Xotic (other than Windows'). But the drivers it came with are out of date, even by the MSI page's standards, so I'm having to go through them one by one.
G-sync wasn't even enabled with the installed Nvidia driver (Performance Test threw up a big error)

What about BIOS/EC/VBIOS? Did you update all of them? -
I haven't, yet. I was under the impression that unless a newer BIOS offers some necessary feature, there's no need to upgrade and risk something going wrong. I'll check what's installed vs the latest thoughKevin@GenTechPC and Donald@Paladin44 like this.

Not at all, we always perform update on these firmware to the latest and greatest unless they create issues. In case issues do arise we can always revert the process.hmscott likes this. -

Almost always.
I've seen cases where reverting Bios caused a complete bios chip brick. Thankfully I've only heard of that happening on two systems but I'm sure there are MANY more examples.
First example I can ever remember, which happened to 100% of people (you can search the old USENET/google archives for this):
Abit BH6: Going from FU back to FL would cause a 100% brick. You would have to hotflash the Bios FL again to recover (this required a second already good Bios chip to start up the PC then swap it in DOS mode, then the second flash would work).
There was even a version in the "1.1" revision of the BH6 where another bios caused the exact same thing (I think it was going from PP to an older bios).
One of MSI's updates recently even caused a brick, on the GT73VR. And the GT73VR is supposed to have two Bios chips, or maybe it doesn't, but the GT72 had two Bios chips.
Anyone see 2 bios chips on this?
Or maybe its on the backside?Last edited: Oct 20, 2017 -

BIOS bricks used to happen a lot with older platforms before when compared against modern updates. BIOS bricks can happen when system is unstable so you definitely don't want to update the BIOS while the system is under a stressed situation such as overclocked situation. AMI Aptio provides better and secure flashing experience than its legacy flash. It's better and safer to do it due to bug fixes and performance enhancement. If you see one BIOS available such as GT73VR for example, it has E17A1IMS.10C only on the download page, can we assume that the older ones were so buggy so MSI removed them? Manufacturers usually do not tell us what they had fixed in details listed in the change log on the download page, right?

Kevin, you said in one of your old posts (or maybe it was Ken?) that the GT72 had two bios chips. But the GT73VR only has one? The one painted red dot? Isn't there a second? (painted blue?). the GT72 had two. Why does the GT73VR Boot loop 5 times when doing a CMOS clear anyway, or a Bios flash?
-
Kevin@GenTechPC Company Representative
Yes, I've seen it on GT72 having dual BIOS but was not able to get the other one to work last year. Boot loop means a lot of things in the background, it also does that when the system is bricked in a way which will never come back up. Perhaps, MSI has the answer for you.Papusan likes this. -

I've got an SM961, so I'll have to wait for the OEM updates.... currently using 2.4.7.0 from HP I think. Different numbering system.

Yeah, OEM*s go their own roads.
More info regarding the new Samsung NVMe Driver...
HARDWARE ENCRYPTION WITH NVME DRIVER SAMSUNG 2.3 FOR SSD 950/960 SERIES
"Samsung has released a new version of its proprietary NVMe driver for the 950 PRO, 960 EVO and 960 PRO series SSDs.
This version 2.3 of the Samsung NVMe driver provides support for SSDs that are used as SED (Self-Encrypting Drive) ie when data encryption is enabled. Samsung M.2 PCIe SSDs (and 2.5 "SATA) support multiple hardware encryption technologies such as Class 0 (AES-256), TCG Opal, and Encrypted Drive (Microsoft eDrive) modes that can be enabled with the Magician 5.1 home app for example, or with a third-party solution."
Until now, only the Microsoft NVMe driver natively integrated into Windows enabled hardware encryption with these Samsung SSDs. The Samsung driver is considered slightly better.
From win-raid.com/Recommended-AHCI-RAID-and-NVMe-Drivers @Phoenix have you tested?

Did you get this resolved ?
From your screenshot I see you are running CrystalDiskInfo 7.0.5 - this is a rather old version.
I've just installed 7.5.0 which is the latest. Try updating and see if that resolves your issue.
I too am on the Creators Update. Installed last week. -

Here's how mine looks:
Always ensure you only have on disk attached or active when you are installing Windows.
I disable the other disks in the BIOS to avoid Windows from creating any system partitions on the others disks or you can follow the workaround posted here:
How to properly install Windows on a system with multiple drives
PS: Hijacking threads is not nice. It's best to create a separate thread regarding this issue so it would get more exposure and thuse better help

Now I finally know why since I updated to the latest IRST v15.8.1.1007 my GT73VR 7RF freezes.
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...d-Storage-Technology-Intel-RST-?product=55005
I am currently running a raid 0 using 2x Samsung 960 PRO 512GB each with a 16KB stripe and I would like to confirm that the best IRST drivers that work fine (In raid o) are the v15.2.0.1020?
Thanks for your info Phoenix, I was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. -
Spartan@HIDevolution Company Representative
Tried them all, the new ones which are optimized for Optane all cause a full freeze to the system after doing anything that involves copying files or activity to the disk.
Stick to 15.2.0.1020

No worries Phoenix.
Do you run your system on a raid 0 array?
Do you know if i should select write back or write through within IRST software?
Currently I have selected write through and that has mitigated so far the laptop being frozen which you are indeed correct, it will freezes but just copying files or doing any activity on the disk.

is there an error with the new version?
-

not that I've noticed but Windows update and the MSI website show the same version which is now in the OP again so I preferred to stay with the official release as upgrading a card reader driver doesn't bring anything new to the table so better play it by the books.Djadit likes this. -

There is absolutely no point in running RAID 0 on NVME drives. It is just marketing BS for companies to get more money out of you. Gains are negligible at best. Only other thing it is good for is trying to make your epeen seem bigger.hmscott likes this.
-
Or bigger C: partition as bro @Phoenix
All know about the bottlenecked by the DMI. But others have other needs as you should know. Not all is about the epeen.

Oh but there is, I use it to combine my 2x 2TB 960 Pros into a large RAID 0 Array of 4TB. Partition C: into 200 GB for the OS and 3.6TB goes for the D: Partition for Games/Data/Music/Videos/Pics/Docs
Then I have my 4TB 850 EVO and the 1TB 850 EVO, those can't be in RAID since the RAID Array will be limited to the smallest disk so it will only be 2TB. Thus, I set them up as a single spanned drive of 5TB.
I don't like having many partitions so RAID 0 is a must for me.
I have my data backed up automatically using SyncBackPro and it only syncs the new changes so a full backup will take no more than a few seconds or more depending on how much data I've added. Not that an SSD has ever failed on me but better be safe than sorry.
Add to that the increased sequential read/write speeds although a welcome, not really noticeable in real life since what an average user or even power user will most likely only feel the 4K Random Read/Write speeds.
