Hey all... I'm considering order this one from RKC. Anyone else doing the same? It's the GX640 without the red trimming. Is this the same as the Force 1656 and PowerPro I 7:15 but with an HD5850 instead of the 250m? How is RKC? Reputable?

I'm thinking of going with this setup:

    i7 820
    4gb DDR3 1333MHz PC3-10666
    500gb 7200rpm
    6 Cell Battery
    Intel N6300 Wireless

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks,
    s-one

Yes, it says it's built on the 1656. If you fill out the FAQ we can help you better.

Good setup and RK is reputable. I like the powerpro , it gives you the option to replace the ODD with an HDD but the 250m sucks.

Like you said , they are pretty much the same thing only with ...

I'm happy I ordered the 1651 with the silver trim instead of the one with the blaring bright red trim. Ahahah. Either way though, Msi NEEDS some new chassis' soon.

Why do you people hate red trimming so much?
Getting something, that has some unique features and distinctive look is cool (at least I think so) - what is the point of having dull black/grey notebook look when you are targeting into gaming range. If you wanna look serious, just buy lenovo thinkpad with all it's rugginess.

Haha, i like the red, except i have grey, its basically the difference between discreet, and well flashy.

Grey and black were exciting when HP was doing it. Then Apple started making those macs that had the black keyboard too, and something made me unattracted to black keyboard on silver/grey chassis. hmmmm

Anyhoo, red's fine. Most pics I've seen make it look orange though. Fortunately, Newegg's pics make it look red-orange like Crayola crayons, so I'm still attracted.

Funnily enough the problem for me is that the barebones version I find way too dull, its like a boring matte plastic everywhere, like super old laptops from a few years back.

Meanwhile the GX retail versions I find too flashy because of the abundant bright red trim, I'd rather it be a darker velvet red or blue or metallic silver/polished grey or something else nice-looking hahaa. I love the brushed aluminum though.

L< best of both worlds ):

Thanks for all the replies. Glad to hear RKC is reputable. But I'm curious as to why only RKC has this configurable even though the others have it but with the 250m.

Not sure about the battery. In my case I will most likely have it plugged in all the time so I'm going with the smallest battery. Well I mean I will always be by an outlet 99% of my usage.

There are several RKC (Rob, I believe his name is?) retail guys who frequent this forum, I'd PM one of them about it.

Honestly, the GE600 or watever looks the best. It's like MSI's answer to Asus's N61 which I think looks the best of the Asus line.

So the MSI MS-1656-ID1 is plastic and the MSI GX640 is aluminum? They would weigh different as well then huh?

Only the palm rest and the screen lid is brushed Alu. Weight should be about the same

Yea, we've not exactly dealing with your laptop being made out of industrial alu rods so the weight is negligible.

Gentechpc and Xoticpc will likely have the barebones as well but just haven't posted them yet because they haven't come out yet

I'm really getting tired of waiting for the GX740 and might get the MSI-MS-1727 17", but I think I would rather have the MSI MS-1656-ID1.

I don't see the MSI MS-1656-ID1 at Gentech but I would think/hope it would be cheaper than the MS-1727 17".

I swear I'm gonna just keep using my Dell because this is such a hard purchase; at least I have a fully working hackintosh with the ol'1520 ;)
