I just had to let this out of my chest because my wallet really hurts. I never thought Msi Ge72 has a very low quality internally. I received SMART status and that my hard drive failed after 2 weeks. I contacted the MSI customer service and they require me to send it back. Today, I went to UPS and did exactly as required but to my surprise the shipping cost to send it back is 200 dollars. I am totally disappointed of how easily the hard drive broke after 1 year of use the cost of shipping it back. I had Asus laptop and it took almost 3 years before I experienced any problems. Have you guys paid for high shpping cost just to return the laptop for repairs?

It's one of the "gotcha's" for all the vendors that require shipping back the "whole laptop" instead of swapping a component.

MSI has done both over the years, but I've been burned by this too.

The Disk vendor won't take back the disk on warranty because it was sold bundled with a laptop (desktops too), so you need to work with the laptop / desktop maker for a replacement.

I've got a dead 128GB M.2 SATA SSD that was part of a RAID0 2x128GB in my GT80 SLI-263, and MSI also wouldn't ship a replacement, MSI requested to send in the whole laptop - which is silly for a $50 part.

For me it wasn't a big deal as I was already going to upgrade to 4x SATA M.2 500GB RAID0, but it still sucks I've got a DOA drive after 2 weeks use.

In the past on the rare times I get a DOA drive, I just replace it myself, usually it's only $40-50 to replace those super cheap drives, and instead I invest in a much better larger drive anyway.

That's also why I suggest pulling the original drive's and setting them on the shelf with the original OS image installation (and recovery image), as I am going to upgrade anyway.

I'd suggest replacing the drive yourself, and keep the dead drive in case some other RMA is needed in the future, then you can piggy back the drive RMA replacement with that needed RMA.

Also, try asking MSI to send you a return mailin box with return postage pre-paid - they should provide that but won't offer it unless you ask.

When that's worked in the past you can use that as an inducement for them to send you a replacement drive and return box for the dead drive - as it's now cheaper for them to do that than to pay the whole round trip shipping to send in the whole laptop :)

Wait. I thought MSI had a complimentary pick up service. At least my purchase gere in Australia does. So sorry to hear that happened to you guys.

MSI USA does allow you to send HDD back for swap if you are able to confirm the HDD is defective, such as swapping to a spare HDD/SSD that you have.

It's only been a year or so since I tried that with MSI USA, they rejected my request to return the SSD for a replacement, and requested I send in the entire laptop.

@Navi1213 is saying the same is true today... IDK if he is in the USA...?

There were also problems with the hinges and how easy they may wear off / break how several users reported.
I had to mod mine too, because i simply do not trust this vendor anymore like i did before. And this for good reasen. Too sad.

I guess it depends on the situation where the tech support staff feels that there's a need to send in the whole thing instead of component itself then your mileage does vary.

I meant I had the Laptop for 1 a year then I received a SMART Notification and 2 weeks after that my Laptop stopped working. I still have my 2 year manufacturer warranty so I thought they could repair it free of charge. Though, I have to pay for shipping to their repair centre in Markham ON and costs me 200 bucks, but they said they will ship my laptop back free of Charge.
