MSI's warranty package seems to only apply to its stock units, but I want to add ssd, change the screen, etc, so I would get a modified unit. MSI website indicates barebone units come with 1-year warranty, but no further details. Xoticpc website says

Any Customized MSI Ensemble laptop will have a warranty for 1 Year through XOTIC PC on the customized components. XOTIC PC covers return shipping coverage to the customer on any parts under the 1 Year Warranty. XOTIC PC provides a 15 day DOA warranty and will cover shipping both ways for any customized DOA MSI Ensemble Laptop.

Does that mean MSI only covers their stock component parts while retailers cover the parts you choose for upgrade? I guess xotic pc's shipping coverage is US only, so I will have to buy the Canada 2 way ground shipping coverage if I want to get free shipping?

OK, I see, things are just that way. I read xotic pc's customized asus warranty, which is easier to understand from my perspective of view. Customized components are warranted through retailer while warranty of original stock components are provided by manufacturer. Shipping to xotic pc is covered by them if Canada 2-way coverage is bought whereas shipment to MSI (which means stock parts go wrong) is always covered by xotic pc no matter there is 2-way coverage or not. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

My suggestion is to not rely on Internet information posted and I think it's best for you to contact and speak with the sales staff personally to get more accurate information.

I also suggest you speak with other highly praised dealers like Gentech and others to get the most information and best deal before you buy.

    Nothing worse than buyers remorse.

MSI barebones Whitebooks generally have only a 1 year warranty and that warranty is honored through the reseller and not directly between you and MSI.Any upgrades installed by the reseller are warrantied by the reseller whether it's a branded MSI or a barebones Whitebook.

In any case,if you buy a barebones model you need to return it to the place you bought it for any repairs that are covered by the warranty and not RMA to MSI.

Branded models have a 2 year MSI domestic warranty,1 year Global Warranty plus and Accidental Damage Warranty for 1 year to the original purchaser.

Thank you for so detailed response! Actually I've been waiting for them to reply me, so I just wanted to try my fortune here. I need a barebone, coz MSI stock units come with a matte screen, which I'll have to swap. I've ruled out Clevo because of negative comments on its fan noise, and I dont want to wait for another two months for Asus G750. But even if I go for G750, I will have to customize it anyway. I just can't understand why gaming laptops would come with a matte screen.

I happen to like my 17.3" matte type screen.

AUO B173WH01 v4 = 90% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy Type
AUO B173WH01 v5 = 90% NTSC Color Gamut Matte Type

While Glossy type screens have a more pleasing color pop to some and is probably a bit better for video viewing I don't think they are any better when it comes to gaming.

A few people have posted here that they put the 90% color gamut screen in their GT7xx purchase from Gentech and love it.

The 95% color gamut screens can be put into just about any MSI 15.6" model and the 90% into any 17.3" model: branded or barebones.

The upcoming 4K and 3K screens will have different connections to the motherboards so the will probably not be offered upgrades to models that have 40pin connections.

Are you suggesting the color gamut upgrade on matte screen is offered by MSI but if I go for a glossy screen with such an upgrade it would be provided by the retailer? And may I ask what are 3K and 4K screens?

OK, I've figured that out, I guess I dont need that high resolutions. So, what about a glossy screen with a color upgrade? Will it be offered by MSI or the reseller?
