Which is a good one that will fit into the drive bay? The LG GUB0N SATA DVDRW I just got will not fit in properly. It currently has a Lite On DS-8A8SH.

Please double check the height. Is it 9.5mm or 12.5mm?
-
The LG is 9.5mm. I now see that the LiteOn is 12.7mm!

Crap, so what are you going to do next? Return and exchange it? -
Why not pad it with a bit of cardboard? And swap the Lite On front to the LG.
-
Trying to exchange it if I can get some help with a replacement. Just heard back after submitting RMA. It's an OEM unit and they want to know about warranty cards, literature etc.
I cannot get the bracket screw to hold in the ODD. I wish there was a caddy to convert the 12.7 to accommodate a 9.5mm drive. They have them for HDD conversions. -
Screw's optional, never bothered to use it once removed.
-
Well then how do you keep the ODD from sliding out of the bay?
I'm not going to use cardboard in it. I use this for business as well as personal. -
Friction (or a longer screw, if that'll soothe the nerves). Cardboard would be invisible (behind the front), but hey, no problem, obtain a 12.5mm drive then.
-
Okay I may have found a replacement for it that is in stock (why do I have to do all the work?
). It's a
LG GTB0N that is 12.7mm in height. I only hope it is a decent DVDRW. You know the website it was purchased at only states the box dimensions for the drives! Who the hell cares about that!
I would have gone straight with a exact swap of the Lite On, but I have already had MSi replace it when it was brand new. I still get DVDs that are not recognised when I insert them into the drive. I then have to replace them up to five times over before they are read!
Can the stock bezel be replaced with the MSi one? These sites says "slimline" what the hell does that mean! They should give descriptive information! Both of the LGs - GT and GU models state that! *Rant over!*

Slimline means non-desktop/3.5" factor, same with thin external ODDs; there's a laptop model inside the housing. The 12.5/9mm is an issue with 2.5" hdds as well; both exist and not all laptops can accommodate 12.5mm.
The front is held in place by two plastic clips and optional screw. Btw, already tried to clean the lens of the Lite On? Disc not recognised is a common indicator for dust. -
Thing is this is the way it always was. It never read the discs correctly, which is why I RMAd to MSi as soon as I got the laptop. I figured it must be some manufacturer defect which is why I went with a different brand. I have tried multiple times to clean the lens with a DVD cleaning disc. I already pulled off the Lite On's (MSi GT70's) bezel so it's ready to go onto the LG when I receive it. The bezel has two vertical tabs and one horizontal on the right edge (no screws). I was just issued RMA today <fingers crossed>. BTW, the ODD was a birthday gift - nice way to celebrate it!

Your ODD isn't under MSI's warranty anymore? -
No longer under warranty. Stupidly I could have the drive swapped out when I had the screen lid & hinges replaced by MSi. I didn't think of it at the time.
But like I said, I didn't want to have
yet another defective Lite On ODD.

We rarely see one that fails though, sorry to hear that it happened to you. -
Thanks Kev! Murphy's Law follows me around I guess!
One bright side to all this laptop debacle was that when the laptop lid was replaced, it sorted out the
XoticPC sticker issue. It now has the illuminated MSi Dragon logo which I quite fancy.

Just to point out by the way that the logo is simply a window that uses the backlight bleed out of the back of the machine to emit light
So the serieal number of the panel happened to be where that window saw through to.

Okay, so at least you don't have other severe issues and hopefully there won't be none. *knock* -
Well getting them to admit that they were wrong about the their idea of a description was like that of pulling teeth. I finally got them to pay for return shipping. Now it's a matter of waiting!
As for an explanation of Slimline I think this speaks volumes. -
Oh this is beautiful! No exchange was made but instead at least fully refunded!

Well a refund or exchange is a good outcome for you I suppose, what do you plan on getting now?
-

That's great.
-
Well since I have already researched the subject I still plan on the LG GTB0N. Since I am an Amazon Prime member I am getting one sent out in only two days! Amazon's return policy also isn't so convoluted as well should I run into any more snafus. I'll finally have my birthday gift!
-
This is classic; not only does it show that the ODD was refunded but the replacement (freebie) was also sent out. I just received it along with the Amazon one! I now have two!
When it rains it pours!

That's great!! Have you installed it and verify if the issue is resolved? -
WhatsThePoint Notebook Virtuoso
If you don't use an ODD very often or once in a blue moon like me why not put it in an external USB enclosure and put a caddy with another SSD or spinner in the ODD bay.I have 3 SSDs in my old GT780DX and an ODD collecting dust in the closet.
On 1 SSD is Windows 10,another is Windows 8.1 and the 3rd has 7 Ultimate. -
So after looking at the invoice the ODD was store credited and then was charged from that (never received an email for that fact though). Such is life! The replacement ODD works great the first time out! It does however set in more recessed then the stock Lite On did.
I have an external Buffalo drive which I've tried out in a pinch. Just so cumbersome taking it out any time it was needed. I wanted to have everything together, since I transport the laptop around for business (yes I use a gaming laptop for business. The multicoloured keyboard gets responses!). The GT70 has a lot of punch for many different applications. I also love the fact that it can be taken easily apart for maintenance!
BTW your ODD collecting dust is like that of my old console gaming; which consists of Dreamcast, XBOX, and PS1 (modded).
I keep collecting XBOX games but never play them! I think that list is up to eight or nine now with four of them still factory sealed!

Lol, you remind me of this:

That's great because it works!
I have an ODD but I stopped using it for many years, might as well just disable it to free up a SATA port for more HDD instead. -
So long as I don't end up like this guy with 922 PS2 games collected! If I do, then just shoot me!
They're
all listed here should anyone be interested. He's now up to 1055 since the picture was taken!

Then check out SteamLeft Meaker. It determines how much gametime you have left to beat every game in your Steam library!

The problem is that some of my games are so old they are not registered as being completed when I really have. I got steam around the time of the original box set of blue shift, opposing forces etc
-
Wouldn't you just know it! I just got XBOX One for a gift with four games no less! More dust to collect! NO, I am getting a good dust cover for that thing!
