I just bought the MSI GS60 Skylake i7 with GTX 965M Win10 and the CPU fan is very loud. I'm getting 90-95 dba (using iPhone app) right out of the box - no gaming, no load at all, only idle. The fan noise has been constant right out of the box.

This was delivered just today and I've only had it for 2 hours and it's driving me crazy! This is my first MSI - is this normal or do I need to exchange it?

I did research before buying and dba is not supposed to pass 30 when on idle:

That doesn't feel right, but what are the running processes during idle?
    Can you check CPU utilization?

According to the "Dragon Gaming Center" CPU usage is max 1% while the fan speed is almost 3,000 rpm. GPU usage is zero along with GPU fan.

I do notice there is a BIOS update on MSI's website but I don't know how to implement this - I'm watching instructionals on YouTube.

What's your existing BIOS & EC version? You can find these information in the BIOS setup under System Information.

    Thanks, Kevin!

The description on MSI's website only states "Update Microcode to 74." How do I know this patch is for this particular problem? Or should I be updating the BIOS regardless because it's good practice? I'm asking because I was planning on asking for an exchange tomorrow and I'm afraid to screw something up.

MSI isn't going to release full change logs to the general public that's why you only see one line.
BIOS update can be risky, but we have no choice right now because you are having issues.
As long as it's not stability issue then it's fine.

Is it possible to rollback the update easily in case I do make a mistake?

Most of time it will be fine, but in rare cases where BIOS update failure occurs, it would brick the system therefore becomes unrecoverable.

US model name is slightly different than global one.
However, the BIOS version is of the same and sequence if you compare the entire text string.

Unfortunately, this didn't work. The dba count is consistently at 85 while the computer is idle. I took this back to the seller and their "tech expert" told me this was completely normal for an MSI gaming notebook.

MSI's website is now showing the webpage for the 242. I don't think this was there yesterday or perhaps I was on the MSI Global site. The BIOS version they are showing is E16H7IMS.111
    https://us.msi.com/Notebook/support/GS60-Ghost-6th-Gen-GTX-965M.html#down-bios

After installing the previous update you mentioned (10D), I tried this one and it said "Failed, Wrong Image Format".

According to MSI Tech Support via phone, there is also a newer firmware update which was targeted to the fans. I was not able to install this as I was getting an error code so MSI asked that I send in the notebook via an RMA.

Would you happen to know how I can roll back the BIOS to the original one that came with the machine (version E16H8IMS.109)?
