I purchased a refurbished MSI GT72 2QD-405USK Dominator laptop on ebay. After receiving it I am a bit confused, The 405 specs are different than the one I got (This one is better 2015 mfg). This one came with a GTX970M 4GB and an Intel 4720HQ 2,6 cpu, 128GB SSD and a 1TB HDD with 16GB ram. Did the 405US Dominator come in different versions? I am just looking for a little history on this unit. The manual is not specific.
MY BIG Qs and info needed is:
1. How can I find the installed 16GB ram memory speed so I can upgrade to 32GB. The DDR3L 1600 is what I want to use but I do not know what is in it, DDR3L 1333 or 1600? The ram in it is under the MB so I do not want to remove that just to find out. I do not think they can be mixed and I would not want to anyway. I am using it for 3d animation/film/sound Studio work. Working Very nice but it just needs more ram for now!
2. The installed 128GB ssd card:
Can I use 3 others of different sizes? OR must they be the same size?
500GB + 500GB + 500GB and the installed 128GB??? I also want to replace the 1TB HDD with a 500GB SSD.
I have had no success on finding out any of this info anywhere yet.... Thanks in advance!

You could use a program like CPU-Z to find out what ram is installed in the computer. It will tell you brand, model number, speeds, all that. There are other programs as well, but that is a simple one for info. You can mix ram, but it isn't recommended. If you get slower ram, then your faster ram runs at that slower speed, and it can increase chances of blue screens as well. Best to get the same ram if possible, or at least ram that is the same specs and speed. You may just want to open the bottom panel to take a look to see where it is installed. You would need to do that anyways to do the upgrade. Check the easy spot first.
You can install different sizes of SSDs. But if you want to put them in a RAID configuration, you would want to have the same drives, or at least same sizes, speeds, etc. If you have 3 drives, 128, 500, 500, and put it in raid, then it basically treats them like 3x 128gb drives. You should be able to raid two matching drives and leave the third out of the configuration if you wanted to. Or you could just have three completely independent drives if you wanted, and not have to worry about setting up raid.Bray42 likes this. -

1. Support up to 32GB of DDR3L 1333/1600, if you want to upgrade the speed you can get up to 1866MHz.
2. You can install SSD of different sizes if you are just going to run them as JBOD mode. But if you are going to run RAID then you can use 2x 500GB as RAID 0, and then make the original 128GB as data drive.Bray42 likes this. -
Thanks very much guys
I got it and the tips were well taken and used! Now I know about the SSDs and Ram but I still can not find a GT72 2QD-405US info anywhere.....even on MSI. Strange......Perhaps it is just an upgraded unit but being a refurbished unit it seems it would fit the basic model specs.
Also, I am wondering about the Sound Blaster Cinema 2, it is installed and loads up on start but I have no control of it. It is not to be found again anywhere. I can not even remove it.
Thank you for your time and assistance!!!! -
