Has anyone run into the problem of their fan not working properly? My fan only works when the intel processors are above 48C. Once the temp dips below that, the fan turns off and then the processors go above that temp and the fan will kick back on. There is no problem of overheating or random shut downs but it gets to be annoying hearing the fans going from off to full blast for a second then back off about three seconds later constantly. The only thing I have replaced on this laptop is the HDD with a SSD. I have tried reinstalling windows, different graphics drivers, updating BIOS, and cleaning out any dust but it still has this problem. I have a warranty still but does anyone have any suggestions before I send it in?

I'm up and running at 16GB on my X460DX-006 US. I bought this kit here and all seems to work well. WEI didn't change, interestingly:

Just upgraded to the Windows 8 Release Preview using MSI's new drivers for the x460dx. I've got a problem where Optimus won't turn off the NVIDIA card even though it's disabled in the NVIDIA control panel. Anyone run into a similar issue?

    **EDIT**

Spent a couple of hours reviewing programs last night, reinstalling drivers, etc. Turns out the Steam client was using the 540M even though it was disabled in the NVIDIA control panel.

I installed the Windows 8 Release Preview and I'm running into an annoying issue. The touchpad works with no driver installed, but when I try to install the Windows 8 driver from MSI's website it says that it is not compatible with this touchpad. I'd like to have my mouse gestures back. Does anyone have a download that works?

Hi guys, I am new to this forum. Just found it :)

I have been using X460 for almost a year and has a nagging problem...when I connect a external monitor via the VGA port, the external monitor always flickers subtly...like TV with not so good reception. It is still very usable just a bit annoying. Does anyone have this issue, too? I googled this issue and somewhere it mentioned that Intel HD 3000 has an inherent flaw with VGA output...

If I connect to an external monitor using HDMI, there is no flicker.

    Hi all,

For french speaking people, you may find this topic useful: MSI X460 X460DX [Topic Unique] - Ultraportable - Ordinateurs portables - FORUM HardWare.fr

About the HDD caddy rack, this is the reference I am using: 2nd SATA HDD SSD Hard Drive Bay Caddy for Laptops (9.5mm) en vente sur eBay.fr (fin le 30-oct.-12 19:41:00 Paris)

It fits nicely the slot in the notebook and you can even attach the Bezel panel from the original DVD-writer

You may also be interested to fit your former DVD-Writer in this USB external enclosure case: USB External Enclosure case for SATA DVD Drive 9.5mm en vente sur eBay.fr (fin le 13-nov.-12 04:36:46 Paris)

    Everything was plug and play.

There is a nice tutorial about this on http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/612199-hdd-caddy-msi-x460dx-2.html

    Hope this helps,

    Hi everyone,

I would like to know whether someone is able to play Crysis 2 on a X460DX with I5-2430m and GT540m 2gb (Nvidia driver 285.80). I am able to run Crysis and Crysis warhead perfectly.

Crysis 2 (v1, update v1.1 or v1.9) crashes at startup, a black screen appears and disappears instantly, then the game is still running in thread for a minute and the screens flashes black once then back to desktop.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi all,

Following my post, I have the answer to my question, the GT540m seems to be working fine after installing the DX11 ultra edition patch after installing v1.9 update of Crysis 2 (running with admin rights). I have also updated the driver to latest version but the game was still crashing. Working fine in native resolution in HIGH.

This games is fantastic but very linear at first glance.

    Hope this helps,

Does anyone know where I can buy the replacement keyboard? I tried looking up the model or part part number through device manager but it just says standard PS/2 keyboard.

    Hello,

I have a question for you guys. Since tomorrow is Black Friday, I will probably be buying an Intel SSD 330 Series 180GB SATA 3, 6 GB/S for my MSI X460DX-006US. It is on sale for $99. I was just wondering if/how I can make it fit in my laptop? I will be using is as my primary drive as it will be replacing my HDD. Also, is the motherboard compatible with SATA 3 drives? For those of you who have already installed SSDs in their laptop, how big of a difference does it make?

    Thanks!

If you guys like the x460dx then you guys are going to love the new GE40-Dragon Eyes from MSI. It's basically the same design, weight and thickness, adding the red led dragon eyes on the aluminum lid, comes with HD+ 900p resolution matte screen, an i7 Quadcore Haswell cpu, and a Geforce GTX 760m.

Does anyone know what the most up to date graphics driver that works with Optimus technology is? I made the mistake of putting GeForce Experience on my x460dx and now my laptop is stuck on the 540M even when doing things like word processing. Is there a site or something that I can bookmark to keep up to date with those drivers instead of having to go searching every so often?

Your best bet is to grab the last official driver from MSI. I ended up giving my x460dx to my brother so I can't check, but I'm pretty sure he's ruining the latest NVIDIA drivers with Optimus, then configuring the driver through the NVIDIA control panel.

I'm not sure if it supports SATA3, but upgrading to an SSD will change your life. At least it did for me.

Best money ever spent on any computer I've owned in over 20 years.

Computer111, check the first few posts of this thread. I posted benchmarks when I installed a Crucial M4. It's SATA 3, and made a world of difference. Install instructions should be there, too, if you want to replace the optical drive with a caddy.

    Hi to you all.
That's my first post, as I need to ask you something, but I've been following this thread for a while now.

I have this very annoying isuue with my fan waking up, even as I write this post (you know really loud like)
HWMonitor is showing around 60C (140F) and I'm only using chrome, resource mon and HWM.

When your fan starts being loud? What temp? I probably gonna clean it up anyway...
But don't remember fan starting so often but I wasn't measuring temp... And somehow I think chrome is responsible (I open 3 new tabs and fan is taking off)

    thanks for your input

    Have you cleaned the fan/heatsink?
Additionally, try updating the BIOS and EC as there could have been fan table updates which may help with fan noise.

I've come to the conclusion that chrome is just a beat of an app now. It has the ability to play video with hardware acceleration and all kinds of stuff. If suggest doing your fan test with something besides a Web browser, maybe a spreadsheet or a word processor. And remember, any time your power light is orange, something is using your nvidia card so that will generate more heat.
