These things keep it a lot cooler than it otherwise would, is what I'm trying to say....but it still runs fairly hot.

Optimus is a drawback for games? What? Look, you will never get the same performance out of laptop graphics that you would out of desktop graphics. It just depends what you want. I, personally, don't want to lug a desktop from country to country so I bought the laptop with the best performance/weight combo. Sure, it's not as good as my older ATI 5770 in my desktop at home...but I'm not at home...and I can still game.

The one that you like the most...or that has the best reviews. Newegg.com if you are in the US. They are all pretty much the same. I've got a Coolermaster with 4 USB ports and a variable fan setting.

The 650m should relatively cool compared to the 660m. I don't know the exact temperatures, but I'm thinking 80C range for the 650m.

With my overclocked 660m I could run a mix of high and medium 1080p on Warhead.

Yes, the GE60 models--650m or 660m--have Optimus. Optimus doesn't hurt performance any. It does give you enhanced battery life when not using the GPU.

It's a thin, single-exhaust system with a pansy fan. Heat could be a problem.

Can anyone here, that plays League of Legends or DoTA2, tell me about performance and heating while using the GE70 with GTX660m?

Finally after a long wait i will be receiving my ge60 on thursday.
Anyone playing dota2 what drivers are you using?i ordered the ge60 with 660.i also plan on picking up bf3. Secondly, i plan to leave the laptop plugged in my desk usually but of course sometimes use it on the bed with battery so should i just leave the battery on the laptop even though its fully charged or should i remove it and plug in the battery when i plan on using it on the bed? and lastly any tips on the battery when i receive it? should i fully charge the thing and use it till it gets empty for a number of times(like a week or so)?

Leave the battery in. No reason to remove it. (Unless you're going to put it into storage for a couple of months, but that's not the question, haha).

And also condition the battery. Fully charge it, then let it run out. Maybe do that once a month for six months.

Even though its fully charged while playing on my desk?My current laptop a macbookunibody from late 2008 has this problem. Its my 2nd battery already specialist told me that i leave the battery on while its fully charged is the reason. My 2nd battery i got last year around december and now battery life only last 2 hours and the system is asking me to replace the battery already. Very sad story. I dont want to be getting a new battery pack for my ge60 since battery packs go for 80-120$ which is not cheap.

Unless you have a brand preference they are all pretty much the same. Sometimes you are just unlucky and get faulty RAM. I once bought some Corsair RAM and it arrived faulty. Sent it back to Corsair and they swapped it out. The replacement has been going strong since 2007.

Well it's supposed to support 16 gigs, and I've heard a few people installing 16 gig with no issues, so I doubt it's that.

So the laptop works normally when you have other RAM installed but freaks out when you put the 2x8GB sticks in? Can you test them in another laptop? It may be an obvious question, but are you sure you got compatible RAM? Can you possibly give us a link to what you bought?

Ja, might just be faulty hey... What are you doing that you need 16gigs anyway? With all my gaming the system doesn't use all of my 8 gigs.

    Hey,

I have a GE60 and today the right hinge suddenly went loose, I can hear a screw moving around. Does anyone have a video that shows how to disassemble the ge60 so I can access the hinge and screw it back into place.

    Thanks,

    Tom.

Hi. I've just registered because I've been reading this thread and I'm concerned about something.

I'm planning on buying a GE70 w/ i7 & gf650m. I've read the built quality is mediocre at best and that's what concerns me. It would be my first notebook (im kind of desktop person you see) and I can't really compare anything. I try to take care of my hardware and all but I'm afraid that day-to-day use during college years will break it somehow (it will be used manly indoors, where the AC is accessible, but i will have to carry it in some kind of backpack). Is build quality a deal breaker if im looking for something that will last me 3-4 years? I know there's no true answer for that but i guess there're people that use it more harshly than only at home and can say something about it.

Thanks in advance for any interest and answers.

Just don't abuse it and it should handle fine. Treat it like the $1000+ piece of equipment that it is, and you'll have no problems.

Don't know about it lasting 2-3 years, though. You have desktops, so you know how fast tech moves along. The GE60 isn't top spec for this generation, so it'll get dated sooner than, say, a 680m machine.

The pre 306 drivers are beta drivers, so yes you should update them.

I second forge on the build quality. I'm quite happy with mine...and the screen is awesome!

Some others on the forum have mentioned this red light. No one seems to be sure what it is, from what I can remember, and it's not something I experience with my GE70.

Thanks for answer. I know it will get dated hardware-wise but im really tight on budget ($1000 is a bit stretching it even) and for this money it looks like its best all-in-one (Lenovo Y580 is more hardware capable but im not so sure about it's display. I heard people saying it's not $1k worthy so thats a bit of a deal breaker hearing those words).
I'm a bit concerned about plastic used in GE70 - is it creaking alot? It drives me nuts sometimes when i pick electronics and they creak... I guess that as along as it doesn't creak on the wrist rest it should be ok though. Also i'm kinda concerned on lcd twist - I dont want to replace the display because it got broken during constant opening and closing the lid.

Lol. I hope it does but i heard that the buttons dont work if you dont have the s-bar. Not sure though. I am actually using it now watching youtube videos and i must say that fans are very silent i dont think you will need to crank it up 100% esp in class unless you play demanding games whilst having class :)).

Also i noticed something while playing dota2, if i didnt press the turbo fan button at some point of the game the fans rev up and its quite noticeable but its no biggy for me as i solved it by just pressing the turbo fan that way it will be constant and less annoying then at first you hear nothing then later you hear something and then nothing and hear something. You get the point.

ITS THE BEST! I am coming from a Dell Laptop(2007-08)/Toshiba sattelite(2008-09) MB unibody(2009-2012) and I can say without a doubt that it way better than my previous laptops! The this baby produces is pure awesomeness. I love that i dont have to connect to external speakers whilst watching a movie in my dorm room or playing dota2. with turbo fan on I still can enjoyi the sound/music of the game :)

Take the most expensive laptop on the market, and there will be those that find something to complain about. All I can say is that most of the owners on the forum are pretty happy with the quality. Watch some YouTube reviews to get some additional opinions. I'm very happy with the quality (I was also on a budget) and I think with some over clocking and a little aftermarket modding, after the warranty expires, will keep the laptop in the game for a good while.

Thanks for answer - it kinda clears things up. I see you've got the same model I'm planning to get and I've read that you have some problems with temperatures and to be fair that bothers me a bit too. As much as this notebook is the best I can get in my country for the price, there are these issues which hold me back a bit from buying it. My second option is FHD lenovo y580 but I heard even worse opinions on it... I always thought that buying a notebook would be an easier job :p

I heard that the plastic was kinda flimsy, which surprises me on a $800+ laptop... Should be brushed aluminum

Nothing is ever perfect. I guess if the components weren't meant to handle the temperatures then they wouldn't...but they do. If it really bothers you then you can always take the back panel off and run a cooling pad underneath. It's what I do and it makes a pretty big difference. Ja, I know its not a text book solution but my laptop never leaves my desk unless I fly...which isn't all that often.

Maybe someone else got a bad batch, but I would not call my laptop flimsy. It's a relative term. It sits on my desk and does a great job of that.

Oh, I was watching a review on YouTube for ot, guess I was wrong, can anyone do me a huge favor: can you see if you could put the thumb of your left hand on the left mouse button and the rest of your hand on WASD at the same time; I need to know if I'm able to game with the trackpad on this machine like I was with the M11x R1.

Yeah, well, I'm planning on taking it to the college classes too, so I have to think about if 17,3", overheating, flimsy, power-house monster is what I really do need ;) It's a question that I have to answer myself though... Maybe it would be better to buy GE60? At least it would be smaller but I don't think I could live with smaller display...

Doesnt feel comfortable though but thats just me. Why not get an external mouse and save yourself the uneasiness of using the touch-pad to play games
