one more question: since the fan is on the right side, if you are using the laptop on a desk and have the mouse to the right of the laptop, is this a problem? anyone encountered issues or discomfort with this

Warranty registration is easy. Just go to msi to register on the web form. You then print out the completed form and mail directly to MSI via the directions provided.

Also, anyone know what type of ram I Should buy to upgrade to 6gb?
Is it easy and does it break the warranty? -
.
-
It's one of the things keeping me from buying it right away... perhaps they'll not do it again on a 2nd gen/refresh. Hopefully more lappys will follow the G73's route and stick em in the back -
-
hmm how bad is it? can anyone comment on that?
everything about the laptop looks great, except for the possible mouse hand burning thing lol
maybe a little metal attachment could be made to redirect the hot air for gaming? -
-
Thank you for your help.
I hope they do NOT follow the ASUS G73 and stick the fan exhaust out the back of the laptop. Doing so added about 1.5 inches to the width of the laptop. The only reason it wasn't as bad for the G73 is because it has an aspect ratio of 16:9. Had it been 16:10 (like the GX640) it would have been given the G73 unwieldy dimensions.
The heat coming out the exhaust port is hot, but not excruciatingly painful hot. The exhaust port only occupies one-third of the right side of the laptop, and that's the part farthest away from you. Personally, I don't position my mouse the farthest away from me, so it's not even a bother at all. Perhaps those who have issue with it are using their GX640s on small college desks.

Just got my Intel 6200 Advanced wireless N card in (for $23).
Going to use it to replace the stock Intel 5100 card tonight. -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
When are you guys gonna record games and putthem online, I wanna see footage
-
ordered it
, looks like way more ups than downs.
also looks like the left palm wrest area wont get nearly as hot.
Ill give it a good review when it gets here.
thx for the help everyone -
When I wrote earlier that the stock clocks for my Envy 15 gave me a 3DMark06 score of 7700 (and an OCd GPU scored 9900), I forgot to mention that my GX640 scored a 11300 as a comparison (stock speeds). Can't wait to OC it and see what I get.
Regrettably, I didn't run Vantage on the Envy 15 when I had it. -
although I won't lie, hell will freeze over before I OC...
-
IMPORTANT: in the small print at the bottom of this webpage, it states:
For MSI products purchased outside, please refer to the appropriate regional MSI website.
For those in the USA, you want to go to this link:
http://us.msi.com/index.php?func=service
Just follow the instructions.
Be sure to do all this before 30 days elapse from your PURCHASE date or else MSI won't honor the warranty.

I don't blame you for not wanting to OC. Our laptop only has 1 cooling fan. Needless to say, I'll be watching the temps very closely and going in baby step increments.
The Envy 15 had a great cooling system with 3 internal fans and a magnesium alloy body that drew heat away from the internal components (but then transferred it to your hands and legs). It was great to OC. The problem is that even with the maximum stable OC, it still didn't come close to matching the stock clocks of the GX640.
FYI - My GX640 does NOT burn up on the bottom the way the Envy 15 did.
-
Overclocking for runs and games will still result in a nice overall temp, but furmarking will be suicide, i bet it will overclock very nicely though.
-
Lackofcheese did a furmark with no ill effects. Reached temps of 100C.
-
Hello again,
Presenting you the peak look of the inside of this notebook.
Few insights:
RAM is 1333MHz (nice), manufactured by Starex (first time hearing this name)
There 3 wireless antenna connectors (one is not used)
Quite beefy heatpipes, but ending on a single sink (my previous LG had a setup when a cooler was on the corner of the notebook and heatpipes were connected to two separate sinks: CPU heat goes through side, GPU heat goes through back of notebook)
Any comments? write it on
Uploaded with ImageShack.us -
100C is not a safe temperature.
Thanks for the internal pic, they could have designed it much better tbh,
If i was to design the cooling for this i would,
1)Extend small tower blocks from the GPU heatsink,
2)Have the fan dissipate heat from the left and rear sides of the notebook like the 17 inch machine.
3)Run each heat pipe in individual exhausts (One feeding the left HS and 1 to the right) so they are seperate.
4)Bigger, possibly more developed fan for increased airflow. -
100C is still not the same thing as suicide, unless you run it at those kinds of temps for quite a long time. There's also no guarantee the measurement was correct.
-
Was that non oc'd ? If not , overclocking and running fur will be suicidal ... Was it you who couldn't run fur for more than 8mins before getting scared ?
-
That measurement will most likely be accurate for the components being cooled on the GPU,ontop of that there can be variences of up to 10C on different components, this makes it fairly suicidal, 100C isn't suicide for short periods, but it will be enough to kill a laptop if at that temperature permanent.
-
Are there really 3 antenna connectors? I thought I only saw 2 when I opened mine up.
Where is the 3rd antenna in your pic?
That's why I got the Intel 6200 Wireless N card (2 antennas). If there are 3 antennas, then I'm going to get the Intel 6300 (3 antennas) instead.
I lucked out and also got the 1333 Mhz RAM too (from Provantage.com).
-
Good point. I forgot about variances in measured temps.
Maybe I won't OC mine now.
-
Its the power components that run hot, the g73 for instance can control card temperatures at around 86C in furmark for example, but i think with full power draw, something important on the card (I think that deals with power or something) spikes over 101C.
Overclocking should be ok though, but i dont see why you would anyway,
Now the i series processor, thats worth the overclock.
-
I see the 3rd antenna now. It was wrapped up in a plastic cylindrical shell and then with yellow tape.
Now I have to return the Intel 6200 and get the Intel 6300 now. I wish I had been more observant of this before I ordered the wifi card.
The good news is that the GX640 will work with the Intel 6300 card now (requires 3 antennas).
Good work MSI for including a 3rd antenna for upgrades. Even ASUS didn't do that for the G73. -
Yeah the 3rd antenna is definately helpful, while i am still on the 5100 half size i think that it would be worth upgrading eventually.
-
-
Yeah i agree with you cheese (Lol you had to pick that name) i tend to find my card actually ran cooler with AA on mind you, it was quite strange, and if your fan has even more RPM cycles to trigger, then the temperatures could possibly even drop back down into the high 90's.
-
Hmmm , wished i had one of those cards .. would have been fun to bring those down.
-
lol
Guys new dx11 program/bench here, for those who dont know much about DX11, this is a cool way to see the tesselation and features etc.

Try it -
Are you referring to the CPU? What tools do you use to OC the i5-430M? Thanks.
-
Supposedly its doable with set fsb, i will look right into it tommorow as im completely tired ^^.
-
I tried the program. I must admit that it's wonder was lost on me. I didn't see anything special about it.
I ran it on a i7-920 CPU, ATI HD 5850, 6 GB RAM, ASUS 27 inch monitor (res 1920x1200).
-
They will also need the pll which you know ....
-
Does anyone know when this baby is being released in the UK and what the price will be? I'm hoping that it's below the £1000 mark, making this an instance buy for me, I've read on several websites that it'll be £999.
-
I don't know the price in UK, but in Norway, the price is around 9200kr. That is the same as £1000. Norway is generally more expensive than UK, so the price will probably be less than 1000£.
-
What is the pll? Thanks.
-
Get an older version and manually edit the data thenif we do it the hard way it can be free haha.
-
I have a question about the GX640: If you try to under/overclock the GPU, will that void the warranty?
-
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
Yes, MSI has spies all over the world looking at you while you overclock/underclock >_>...
Just make sure to delete every trace of overclocking programs on your PC when you send it in...
I overclocked and fried my GPU once in my XPSm1530, they never knew, replaced it, but lesson learned... never went higher than what i was supposed to...
And MSI gives you that wonderful 1 year warranty of "accidental" damage
-
Always, but it really comes down to if when it breaks it has a giant cloud of ash surrounding it ^^, its hard to find out if someones overclocked but its a possability.
-
Ok, so if they found out that I had overclocked the GPU, then it will void the warranty. But undreclocking, do they care about that?
-
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
If you underclock, you're not going to damage the components, because they're running lower, cooler and safely-er (wut?), so there wouldnt be any need for warranty?
-
I dont think so as your not pushing the components past manufacture limit, and components downclock themselves anyway so theres no problem with it i dont think.
-
A question for owners, because it's extremely hard to tell from pictures: how much room is there in between the pipes and the case bottom? Is there enough space to do a copper mod ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=414147) ?
If one were able to mod this I think it'd run cooler than an envy and keep fan/vent speed/heat down... -
-
They're ram heatsinks i believe.
