Smooth for me is ~24-30 haha.

Just don't care enough.

i grew up in the era where doom2 came in 4 diskettes.. lol
30 FPS isnt a bad thing.
Most games are locked @ 30fps.
20~25 fps isnt notiecable stuttering @ first...
but then i started playing games like timesplitters, descent, forsaken...
and i noticed how smooth tehy were compared to perfect dark 64 / goldeneye
and i said, oh, gee.
now, smooth for me is above 30fps..
Halo on XBOX was locked @ 30, and its ok... same goes for mario sunshine on the 'cube
-
You do know that television broadcast is at 24Hz or 24FPS, right?
But you wouldn't argue that it's not smooth. Why?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_blur
Crysis has this technology also. 60 FPS is entirely useless. At about 25FPS and there's absolutely, zero, choppiness detectable. All that remains is motion blur.
Also: Oblivion does not have motion blur.
Edit: a bit more reading material http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htm -
u can clearly see and feel a difference when playing a game at 25 than at 60. any game even rts. try playing any old or new fps (cs1.6 to bfbc2) set fps max to 25 and then set it to 60 and see the difference. and if you cant you're truly special.
dont get me wrong, the gx640 is powerful laptop for its size and price. i sold my desktop and im going to purchase it tonight. but that doesnt change the fact that the desktop i sold for 900 is 2.5x faster in performance and its easily noticable if i plan to continue playing bfbc2. -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
No one is arguing that, there IS a noticeable difference.
Just pop in timesplitters2 on gamecube, vs, say... i dunno perfect dark on n64, you'll SEE the difference, you CAN see it when you've gamed so dang long...
like me, i've been gaming for the past 20 years (i was like 5 when i got my atari...)
so, i really know what it looks like
theres a crapload of difference from 20 ~ 30 fps, 30 fps is acceptable, since we're USED to games being LOCKED at 30, like I said, Halo for XBOX, even PC, was locked at 30. it was acceptable back then because you couldnt do a dang thing.
Now, compare Halo, to L4D running at 60fps, you can literally see the difference... its dang silky smooth...
30 fps is NOT choppy, stuttery or whatever, its BEYOND playable.
Games at 30 are as enjoyable as games at 60, not because of the difference in how you perceive framerates, but because the framerates do not interfere with your gameplay.
'tis my chart:
31~60 fps - orgasmic
28~30 fps - YAY I CAN GAME!!
25~27 fps - um.. ok i can still play it
20~24 fps... passable... but... ok, im gonna lower my settings
15~20... sheesh, this is crysis on an 8600mgt

I'd say that for multiplayer framerates have a higher priority than in singleplayer, because framerates also affect your response time, so I'd generally want 60fps playing a multiplayer game even though I'd accept less in singleplayer.

If you want to get technical, the person I was replying to only mentioned upgrading his CPU, not his HDD or RAM. Consequently, my response about upgrading concerned only the CPU.

Intel 6200 wifi card successfully returned.
Intel 6300 wifi card on its way! -
i guess its just really based on preference, i would never play any shooter with 30fps (havnt even played crysis yet because it lags on a desktop 5870 with aa on 19*12).
and yes mutliplayer fps framerates are much much more important than single player. good thing the only game im going to be playing on the laptop is HoN and the mb5850 can play that on max with no difficulty. -

So you've never played Halo 3?
its locked at 30.
OMG, BURN IT DOWN, HERESY!!!!!!
-
-
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
were you disturbed by it?
or were your friends anal about 30fps?
-
and yeah my best friend and i are pretty anal about lagging. fps and latency. when i was first introduced to pc gaming (cs 1.6) i played with 20-25fps on a onboard videocard. but after getting into it ive pretty much had the lastest videocard (x800xt 7800gtx 8800gtx 4870 5870) and gotten used to having great looking games at a very smooth fps.
now that im retired from heavy gaming the gx640 will do its job just fine. until portals 2 comes. -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
Huge difference,
I <3 Mario kart and smash brothers, but nintendo locked them 60fps.(although mario kart plays @30 while multiplayer)
I get anal sometimes, and lower the settings to an acceptable framerate.
This does not rule out, however 30fps as an acceptable to play framerate

What notebook coolers will work best with the GX640? I'm interested in the Zalman NC1000 or NC2000, but not sure if it will line up with the GPU's air intake.
-
I'm waiting for it now as well.
The CFM would obviously be better on the NC3000 series
than on the ZM-NC2000 that I currently use. -
the NC3000's look really good, EXACTLY what I want in a cooler. 3 USB ports and AC external power, +pumps air EVERYWHERE.
ETA? -
just ordered. 1311CND after tax+express shipping+insurance from ncix.com
-
-
If i am not wrong, the ETA should be in april or may... -
Did any of you guys take the stickers off the GX640 when you got it?
-
i took mine off. i left the i5, the ati, and the windows 7 sticker on.
-
So I just had a question about doing a fresh install of windows 7. I have made a windows 7 disk from an .iso file. Do I just boot up the computer using this disk and use the Windows 7 key that comes with the laptop to re-install it?
Also, I know many laptops come with a recovery partition. Do I want to get rid of this (and if yes, how so?) or is it best to keep this partition just in case something goes wrong so that it can be recovered back to factory settings? -
how come people are getting such a huge range of temperatures, like min getting only 84 in MW2 from his review while some people are getting over 95-105 in other games? what's the ambient temp that you guys are in?
-
There's a dedicated thread for posting about GX640 temps here, so that's probably the best place for the discussion.
-

People were saying the m11x run sc2 beta on high - ultra, im fairly certain that the laptop will run in ultra fine.
-
-
I mean this was a while back, but sc2 beta will be uber buggy and non opt of course so why not, keep your hopes high !
-
-
-
No. Still trying to decide whether I should let my advertising- inner self reign supreme or not.
-
I think Dookie's concern is that the demos he's viewed were done with a beta of SC2, minimal players with 1 vs 1, and only a few units on the map (10).
On the other hand, I agree with what you said Dead.

I took off the GX640 sticker simply because the spec sheet doesn't match wats in my machine. Also took off the windows 64-bit sticker because it was itching my palm

hey, i can't get my webcam to work. and the Arcsoft software that came on the maching (arcsoft webcam companion 3) doesn't work.
-
Does anyone know if it is possible to plug in more than one set of headphones by using line in or other port? Thanks!
-
another question. where is the best place to download the AMD clock tool?
-
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
anywhere works, an easy trusted place is Guru3D. Download the one that works on the 5870, it's the same. One thing I noticed though is that don't set it to 400/400 (causes a freeze) or 350/350 (makes your screen go crazy. Safe ones to go with that work for me are:
675/1000 (OC)
625/1000 (Stock)
450/450 (Medium)
300/300 (Medium-low)
75/250 (Low)
Also never go straight down to low. Always stock -> medium -> low -

You were having that arcctool.dll problem, remember?
Reinstall the whole arcsoft thing, perhaps they're related.
-
Ya uh... did you turn the webcam on by pressing the button above the keyboard? lol I forgot earlier too
-
i push the button. the software says the "trial has expired" great to get bloatware that comes pre-expired.
-
Hey everybody, just ordered mine 640 today from a local retailer, it's going to be delivered tomorrow. Can't wait. Really like the aluminum case and nice specs. And only paid 4000 LTL for it (equiv. of 1000GBP). That's quite a rare thing in Lithuania because most of higher-end electronics is hugely over priced here. Hopefully no heat problems arise
-
Good luck!
-
NotEnoughMinerals Notebook Deity
Well I don't think any of us have had heat "problems" per say, we're just really conscious of temps. Don't think any of us have experienced throttling yet.
