Anyone have any stable CPU overclock values and is it worth doing it through the bios or a program? If through a program, which one?

The free-version of "setfsb" works. I was able to overclock 15% with it.

But it seems that most of the GPU-benchmarks show that the overclock reduces scores, in a other forum they say it's a synchronization problem.

So don't expect to up your 3d mark scores ;)

Now, this has probably been said 100 times but what is the benefit of updating the vbios?

I want to do it but my inexperience is holding me back.

I really want to prepare this computer for crysis 2 so it needs to run at its full capabilities. I am having doubts though because in black ops my fps ranges from 40fps - 120fps.

That's an issue of the past.

Enable High Performance Event Timer and you'll be fine.

why when i boot up and use for like an hour or so, in task manager the ram usage is at around 1gig. but after afew hours of using it, the ram usage is at around 1.7gig. why is that so? even closing programs makes no difference except like a 0.05 difference

ive tried the crysis 2 demo. though its only dx9 and not properly optimised yet. my gx640 is the basic set no upgrades at all.
running gamer settings at native resolution gives me around 30-50fps.
havent played much of it but kinda weird the story though.
dont know wheres nomad, psycho. ur a guy thats been sent to back up prophet, but he is infected with some alien virus that the whole country got into. so he give u the suit and shoot himself in the head. and have to find some scientist. never played far though. and the whole us army wants to kill prophet, which they think u are cuz hes the only one who has the suit left.

i bought this laptop 2weeks ago. so i did not update any bios or anything except catalyst drivers to 11.2 and no overclocking

I expect Crysis 2 will run pretty smooth on most of pc's since the game is developed also for X360 so the graphics/geometry/environments will be limited (in terms of level design). Of course, PC's will have better textures, physics calculations and some other eye-candies, but it won't be a big resource hog as the first crysis.

I have planned to buy the MSI GX640 with the i7 processor tomorrow to play RIFT! Which means a grafik intense game and daily average gametime 5 to 8 hours straight!

Will I be able to do that without overheating? Looking here and there in this thread there seem to be some heating issues with longer gaming sessions...?

    Hope my worries are unneccessary...

Just a tip for some people, I was late catching on to this and was pretty frustrating.... but for gaming, make sure you have your power plan set to High Performance AND make sure ECO is set to "gaming mode." I had mine set to "document mode" and it dropped my fps by 15-20

Anyone knows how to decrease the PCI-E link @x1 (not x16) ?

I think it's a useless attempt to decrease consumption, but it's worth to try :p

    Just got the GX640, i7-740QM, windows7 64bit

So now I would like to update everything with the online life update software on MSI website!

But windos7 64bit is NOT in the list of supported opperating systems... it says windows7 32 bit!

    What do I do?

nothing changes either way. it's just a gimmick - all this button does is change in speaker volume - forget it or remap it to something more useful :)

Hey all, the gx640 doesn't seem to have a big aversion to 100w graphics cards, mine is now running a 3800m. Clocks are limited to 3d but my adapter is still only 120w for now.

To be honest I'm liking it more even tho I can't game and it might not be as powerful, it just idles SO nicely... you just can't beat a GPU that downclocks to 100mhz core...

yea, the 5850 can go 50/100 if you want to. I normally downclock to 300/300 and 150/150 when i wanna save power

wheres the turbo button? i dont seem to see it anywhere in the touch sensitive buttons, i searched through the comp only found the turbo on and off image.
im sure there is cuz the higher end and lower end msi laptops has it but why isnt there a simple button for the gx640

Its idling around 42c lately it doesn't always go to the lowest clocks.

Guess I just don't know how to do that, do I need the newest vBIOS or something?

No, there are no turbo buttons. At least that I'm aware of. Is it needed since intel's core i5/i7 overcocks itself via turboboost and gpu can be overclocked manually with better control over temps.

I suspect the GX640 didn't get it because MSI wasn't comfortable with overclocking this particular model, fear of overheating.

Only the old ones, based on Core2 architecture with PM45 chipset. Clarksfield/Arrandale and Sandy Bridge laptops from MSI do not have Turbo button to OC the CPU.

How are you guys able to overclock your 5850's??

I tried OCing to 750/1050 and the top of my LCD began to flicker. I have a very good cooling mat and I haven't flashed the vbios.

That means your card can't handle that much of an OC.

Try lowering it until everything is stable.

Each individual card is different and will have different thresholds for OC-ing. 750 is 24% overclock for the core which is quite a bit, especially since that's higher than a 5870.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that this Turbo button overclocks only the GPU, not the CPU, and by a marginal amount (30MHz or so).

It overclocks the CPU around 5%. Say a 740qm tops out at 2.93 stock turbo and with the MSI turbo on its at 3.053, so yeah you could say its a small amount.

I just joined the ranks of GX640 owners. :) I bought a 260US, which has the i5-450M CPU.

I'm loving finally having a reasonably high resolution (and an 8:5 one to boot!) after suffering with 1366x768 for so long. This makes coding so much easier. So much less scrolling in Eclipse!

Haven't played any games yet, but I have a pile of schoolwork to get done before I can even think about gaming, LOL...

Well, hope you like your lappy. Its a pretty good one from what I can tell. You can OC the gpu some and slap a little more RAM in there and you should be good to go.

The first thing I'll likely do is put a good SSD in it. It has an eSATA port, which makes media storage on an external less of a hassle.

I'll see about upgrading RAM later. A pair of 4GB isn't too expensive anymore, though.

That was the only thing I didnt like about the GX640 and 740. Only have one HDD bay. The 660 models you can raid them and the SSD would be the best upgrade then the ram. Just a 4GB stick you can get for around 30 to 40 depending on what company you buy. Newegg has pretty good deals. 8gb would run you between 70 and 100. Now find a pretty good SSD around 120 or 128GB and slap it in and run your HDD in a external case.
