oups! NVM, it's not arctic silver, just "arctic". It's said it's not conductive.

    ...

Which brings me to the same question : On which side do you put the paste? Directely on the 1 gig DDR5 (black spots) or on the "piece" that you put on it (where the pads are)?

My clocks just changed to 405 MHz / 1000 MHz. ? no Idea how this happened, I don't mess with clocks...

EDIT: Right after I posted it changed back to normal. the volts also changed for 90 to 105.

And now it just went back. What is happening???

EDIT2: It changes as the gpu temp goes from 59 degrees to 60 degrees. Higher clocks at higher temps... I'm really confused...

EDIT NUMERO TRES: I guess I forgot to disable power play after a new download.... sigh, I am NOT on a roll lately.

i installed sp1 again lol. loading speeds slow down again. now im defragging and relised that c drive speed slowed down alot while i supose the d drive remained constant. as in when i defrag both drives they used to analyze and finish at about the same speed but after installing sp1 c drive is way slower. loading stuff are still very slow. any one has solution?

edit: i restarted and defrag again. loading speeds are fine now. but dont see any game performance difference

Hi guys, first time posting here.

I've been having some issues with my GX640 which I purchased around September 2010.

The laptop worked really great, exceeding my expectations actually.
I updated all the drivers and I made copies of my recovery isos on another computer.

Until about two months ago I installed whole bunch of unknown programs on the laptop and it got infected by some spyware/virus.
I couldn't system restore it to an earlier saved point, and I couldn't end the process of the virus. It was dragging my internet speed and I couldn't stream videos properly.
So I decided to do a format with the recovery partition (the F3 function in bios)
After format it seems it was back to factory settings BUT, when I looked into task manager, the virus processes are still here (winlogon.exe, csrss.exe atieclxx.exe with blank username and description)
The thing is, I'm not even sure if these are viruses anymore because I've done many scans but nothing pops up.
Whenever I use wifi it seems like connections drop every 5 mins, which makes streaming and gaming impossible. It works on LAN cable perfectly tho.
I tried updating drivers (it says drivers already up to date, but I tried installing other drivers on the msi website) but that did not seem to solve the problem, which makes me afraid that the wireless adapter has hardware issues.
And I'm sure it's not router problem because I tried using another computer and it connects with no problem.
I read that somewhere by using the recovery partition it does not really fully format the drive, so I suspect maybe my recovery partition is infected as well.

Now here I'm stuck, I want to format both drives the old way and reinstall windows WITH new recovery partitions, can this be done by using the recovery dvd after formatting? Will it recreate a recovery partition for you? If not, will I be able to?

Another thing, the laptop seems to be sometimes crashing on me after format, though I'm not too sure what the problem is. Could it be because the wifi adapter is overheating? What steps should I take to determine if it's software or hardware?

Also on the MSI website it seems to have 3 different type of wireless drivers? (msi Wireless Lan_6890/6891, Intel Wireless Lan and Atheros Wireless Lan), how do I know which one I use?

    Thank you very much

Oh, and a side question, does anyone know if they still cover warrenty in asia? Because I'm moving there with my laptop sometime next month. Thanks again :)

    AS5 is NOT electrically conductive.
Its capacitive. and its VERY minor. its really not anything to be afraid about.
The only real reported incident of damage with as5 was because someone put it inside the CPU socket.

Since we're talking about fear and caution, if you are to be afraid of anything it should be copper shavings and dust from cooling mods. Luckily most of us dont have to encounter that.

The gx640 us version use the intel 5100. So go get the drivers for that directly from the intel website. Now about your clean install, you cannot really create a recovery partition as such but you can create a separate partition and then save a ghost of your drive after installation there so that when bad things happen you can just use a bootable media created with the imaging to software to restore the ghost.

    i have 2 problems occur
firstly this is really irritated me
the seller didnt give me the recovery disc
and unfortunately its windows 7 ultimate 32 BITS!! -,-
this system has 8gb of ram and what i can see from windows experience (computer>properties)
it shows only 8gb (2.98gb usable)
is this mean im only using 3gb ram instead of 8gb ram because of 32bits win7 version? :(

the second issue is when i press eco button
yes, it will change to gaming mode
but when i close my laptop lid(im using external monitor), it goes to sleep mode
when i didnt press my eco button, i closed my laptop lid, it works great
i changed the power settings (when i close laptop lid will do nothing)

do i need to reformat this system to win 7 64bits?
seriously waste alot of time :(

Not a dead thread. You just have to realize that your question demands a big chunk of time from any potential responder. And then, my guess is that very few have actually done what you are asking, and so no one feels that that they can responsibly respond to you. Be patient.

EDIT: I can answer your question about 32-bit windows, I guess: yes, if you are using 32-bit Windows, you aren't getting anything out of your 8GB ram. To solve your problem, you could do a clean install of the 64-bit version of ultimate using the same windows key.

people might not want to help u yet because they want u to calm down first. u seem to want everything to suit u. did u even do some research on the laptop before buying it?
theres no need to take a risk of flashing to a 5870 bios. just overclock to the same stock clocks as a 5870, the temps are gona be high though. and if u really want more performance in the first place why not get a laptop that already has a 5870.
well... probably nxt time u check properly before buying anything.
and dont ask people for big thing like a guide that requires lots of time when u urself dont even google anything

    Just cool down everyone.

    len888:

This notebook has ATI mobility radeon HD 5850, which is esencially the same as 5870. All you need to do to have the same performance is upping your clocks to 700/1000 in ATI overdrive, AMD GPU Clock tool or any other working tool. That's it. No need to flash anything.

32 bit Windows problem is also solvable: just do a clean install of 64 bit Windows version with the same key. And no, you won't have any recovery discs unless you burn your own.

Your issues with eco mode can be explained by the settings in power scheme. Every eco mode has its own. And unfortunately, they cannot be changed. So I just abandoned the eco button at all - there is no need for me to use that function because it doesn't really change anything except screen brightness.

I guess you could also do this on this notebook, yet the cooling in this thing is not so great when comparing with other similar powered notebooks. If you really want to put this to the max, you could play with RBE, up the clocks and (probably) voltage. Just don't use Winflash (my own bad experience :/ ).
To overcome the increased heat generation you can do some cooling mods (repasting GPU, putting some ramsinks on GPU, drilling some holes in the bottom panel/remove the panel altogether, get some decent notebook cooler).

It will work for sure. I'm actually using a chi-mei screen, so no brand based whitelisting or anything like that here.

The voltage problems means the backlight and inverter. They buzz at lower brightnesses. I think my backlight may be dying.

Really this isn't a problem if you know how to replace backlights. You can just find one that is the same type as the original screen, or go LED.

    hello all,

I have changed my cpu i5 430m for a i7 740qm and it works realy good. I changed my thermal compound for artic cooling mx 3 and my temps under load are normally around the 60 degrees but at full load like using super pi mode at 32m and benchmarking at heaven benchmark at max settings at the same time it will hit the 82 degrees in like 1 hour full use. So i am very happy. thanks to anyone who helped me. and my 3dmark 06 score is above the 12k. Later this week i give all my benchmarks at this forum and my specs

    Cheers,
    Robert

Hi! Good to be back and read this nice thread of proud GX640 owners. So, I decided to buy some copper ram sinks and when they get here, I'll put them on the cooling system. Trying to find some MX-4, but can't find something other than AS5 on my country. (and I need new thermal paste for my ps3 as well ><).

But, since the ventilation sucks, I have a question:

I saw in another thread a modded back panel for the GX640, without holes but rather, a full on vent with dust filter and everything. Can't find it right now, but if someone recalls seeing that, tell me.

Also, a replacement back panel would be nice.

Kinda stupid how they didn't change the back panel, because removing it, or drilling holes would improve airflow A LOT.

    Thanks!

Hi can you test something for me? use coretemp and run 3dmark 06 for 2 times one after the other. what are the core temps after that. and run at the same time ati overdrive to look at the temps. my temps are around the 90 degrees when i do that, but i have a i7 740qm in it.

but sadly i couldn't get up to his clock settings..
maybe i need to update my system bios and vbios to the latest version i guess?
or need to repaste my thermal paste... hmm

Yeah, memory is pretty much non-overclockable (but since it's GDDR5 it's still faster than on vast majority of the GPU's out there).
You can just leave it at 1000 and try to raise the Core frequency as high as you can. Maybe even increase the voltage a little since the temps allow that.

I was able to use the stock inverter without any problem. You can alway purchase a spare inverter to go along with the screen since you are going to take the screen/bezel apart.
