Hi all,
Interested in buying the barebones set, but I am wondering what processors are compatable with this barebones set w/o a bios update, since that requires a cpu.
Also I see that alot of processors on ebay are ES, are they actually likely to fail?
From reading some of the threads I gather that the P8400 is compatable, QX9300 isn't and the P9600 may be.
References would be much appreciated!

p8400 and t9400 are confirmed to work out of the box, p8600 is confirmed after bios flashing
-
Mine actually shipped with the original August 08 BIOS (v1.0E IIRC) and a P8600 worked just fine.
That said from other threads that I've read it should support any dual core Monetvina CPU, although IIRC some of the 9XXX series ARE the ones that REQUIRE a BIOS flash first to support them.
I wish that MSI'd get their act together and start putting out release notes with their BIOS updates, e.g. bug fixes, CPU support, etc.
You'll want the latest BIOS + embedded controller firmware update on the 1651 anyways as it is purported to fix a problem where on some models the keyboard, hw keys, and track pad stop responding to input. Power button also fails to operate(does nothing). Hooking up a USB mouse or keyboard works to get mouse etc. back, but attempting to shutdown normally also fails. (It seems to get to the point where it should actually poweroff but doesn't meaning that you had to remove the battery and AC power if connected to get it to turn off.)
The BIOS is v1.0P (IIRC), and you'll probably have to ask MSI directly for it as I never recalled finding barebones BIOS on their site(s). (The GX620 BIOS works as well, but I'd feel safer sticking with the 1651 BIOS. Up to you though.) -
Interesting. going through some further threads i found out the p8600 doesn't won't because it was a refresh, but the release date on it is very close to the release date of the p8400 - confused! Either way do you guys know of any other processors that work with this? I'm buying the processors off ebay so a few processor models would help.

1651 is supposed to support all of the dual core Montevina processors, as it's based around that platform, chipset refresh plus new CPUs, the PWXYZ series.
IOW all of the P series CPUs should work out of the box. The older TWXYZ series is likely the ones that support had to be added for. Also ATM it does NOT support quad cores. (Someone mentioned in another thread that they apparently have a slightly different pinout, but also in the same thread IIRC a new 1651 variant is supposed to be coming out with a slightly revised mb, the 9800M and quad core support -- basically the barebones of the 627 apparently. OTOH have read in other threads that it may never be released, but we'll have to see.)
I REALLY PREFER the color scheme of the basic barebones notebooks, as that awful orange black just doesn't do it for me. (Looks like a Halloween decoration or something...) -
It's supposed to, but does it actually?

I meant ALL montevina cpus, it should but does it?

Hasn't the p8600 been found not to work w/o a bios update? I think bios update is like impossible w/o processor.

P8700
T9550
P9600
T9800
You will have to update the bios with an initial release cpu ( P8400, P8600, T9400, P9500, T9600 ) and then you can install the newer cpu's.
Latest bios and firmware can be found here:

so we should update with the GX620 bios and fireware? or we HAVE to, can you link me up the 1651 updates?
-
Any quick ways of checking BIOS version w/o a cpu?
-
Would a P7350 work w/o a bios update?

The link i posted is for both 1651 and GX620 -
My T5550 worked out of the box
-
5750 working out of the box. Going to update the bios and try a T7500.
-
What are you guys doing that the P8600 will not work with the 1651? I stuck a P8600 in a 1651 with BIOS 1.0E and it booted fine and allowed me to flash to the latest BIOS.
-
T9400 started without a bios update as well... just put the barebone together for my friend

I haven't tried any chips besides p8400 p8600 and t9400 myself. Hey guys whats the cheapest cpu you've found that works out of the box?
I thought they had to be 45nm to work.. But the t5500 is 65nm... Thanks in advance as I know a few people who want a cheap full built system that would need to lower the bottlehead and the cpu's the bottlehead -
I have personally used a T5750 and T7500. I am having issues OCing the T7500 though. I will make a separate thread on that
-
667 FSB and up all works. 533 FSB is a no go. Tested on a MS-1722. The MS-1651 should be the same.
-
T7300 works.
-
I have a T9300 and it doesn't work. There is no display so I can't really get around to install the bios update. The computer starts up and then shuts down after a few seconds and then start backs up by itself a few seconds later and stays on. Don't know what it is. Anyone can help?
-
With regards to your problem with the T9300,the possibilities are it's incompatable, it's loose or it is faulty. I don't see how you expect to be able to flash your BIOS w/o a working/compatable cpu. Maybe ask here to see if a kind soul would lend you a compatable CPU.
-
I have a P8400 installed in my MS-1651, but was wondering if anyone had tried a T8100? Seems to match the specs, but I haven't seen any evidence that they actually work in this laptop.
I ask because I have one of them from another laptop, and it used to work there... But the MS-1651 will not power up with it. Just cycles on and off, with nothing on the screen.
Thanks! -
-
I guess... But I was looking for something more concrete.
There is a chance the CPU died since I had that other laptop, and I was hoping to confirm that it at least should work there.
Thanks. -
Try updating the BIOs.
-
Wait so is it official......the p8600 works without a bios flash????
-
All the ones I opened to preflash wouldn't work out the box with the p8600. I always have to use a T9400 to get it working.
-
will a T8100 work?
-
That's very odd that yours failed to work with a P8600, as the one that I had came with the first BIOS release of the 1651 and had a P8600 in it. Also the 1651 is identical to the GX620(mb/screen/odd/kb/chassis) which comes in the US in two models: P8400/1280x800 or P8600/1680x1050.
I just don't understand how they could've screwed up the P8600 BIOS support when they use what is essentially the same BIOS in their standard config model that ship with that CPU. (Overclocking and a few other BIOS options are missing from the official 1651 BIOS, and it also lacks the MSI logo splash screen and is instead just black with the keypress instructions at the bottom.)
I also had both the GX620 and genero 1651 2nd release BIOS (Oct/Nov 08, forget the letter designation now), and the P8600 continued to work. (Was hoping to fix a kb problem, which it didn't as I also was sent an Embedded Controller firmware update later with the generic BIOS.)
I REALLY wish that MSI'd put out some release notes to go with these BIOS version so that we could know what was fixed/changed/added... -
i used a p8600 as well on one of yours ocon. not sure why it gave you issues
-
Sorry to bump an old thread - my MS-1651 doesn't boot with a T7300, which I've seen as a successful CPU earlier in this thread. Am I correct in assuming that a BIOS update may fix this (I have another processor I can temporarily use which should work)?
If so, can someone please help me find a newish MS-1651 BIOS (rather than a GX620 BIOS) file? It seems to longer be available on MSI's site... maybe someone knows an alternative link, or maybe has a file saved on their PC?
Thanks! -
Also I just bought this laptop barebone for a friend...
Will a P7350 work out of the box?
Thanks in advance guys.
-
Small update to my previous post - before trying to replace the T7300 with another CPU, I noticed that the T7300 just wasn't properly inserted (didn't twist the little screw all the way). After re-testing it, without updating the BIOS, it worked fine.
Processors Compatable with the MS - 1651?
