Recently I built a barebone system and ordered an Intel Wifi 5300 from ebay from a seller in China. Anyhow, after 3 weeks, I finally got it today and after following the guides on here, I put it in. But when I booted up XP, I noticed in device manager the intel 5300 had an error (exclamation icon). It said "This device cannot start. (code 10)".

I tried it in a different non MSI laptop (ASUS FM3j) and it had the same error code. I emailed the seller and he said that it meant my laptop doesn't support the card, and to get a lesser version 4965AGN. He also said to do searches for a hack to get the wifi card working, and left it at that.

    Now my question is:

Isn't the Intel Wifi 5300 card supported on the 1651?
Do I need to do anything else other than putting it in?
Is there a "hack" to get it working?
Or is it just a bad card?

I'm getting the feeling it's a bad card. I'm also getting the feeling the seller is not going to be very helpful.

I'll assume you downloaded and installed the Intel drivers from Intel's homepage for their 5300 series which always provides the newest OEM drivers.

Did you make sure to get the non IBM/HP version of the card? There are two models of the 5300. One for IBM/HP variants which aren't wired the same, and then for everyone else. Check the auction description.

Is it a ES card or a OEM?

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the innitial drivers I installed were official Intel 5300/5100 drivers. I was also aware of the IBM/HP versions too but the description didn't say it, so I assumed it wasn't. Here is the auction description:

    Thanks!

What do you mean by ES or OEM? It didn't have any retail packaging so I'm assuming it's an OEM?

Platforms I tried were Vista 32bit, and XP 32bit. The Asus was XP 32bit also.

most of the 5300's coming from china are es or "engineering samples" of the cards

Oh ok, thanks for clarifying. What's the difference between the ES and OEM?

Before a new product comes on the market it always is being tested of group of testers, so every company hires such testeres and produses a small quantities of the new product that gives to them (ovcoure free of charge :)). Their work is to test this samples and to report problems they've had. After, the company fix these problems and new samples are produced, again for testing. This process is repeated untill there are no problems with the new product and the final ES, also known as Quality Sample (QS) is released on the market. This QS actualy is the first OEM product. You can see that on the item's revision - if it is an early revision state, like "A" or "B" state, this in most cases means that it WILL HAVE PROBLEMS. So my advice to all that want to save money and buy ES is always do the reserch themself - don't trust to the seller on 100%. Otherwise buy the OEM product.

Define cheap? Amazon has new, OEM 5300 units for $34/each.

It is picked up by the hardware, hence the exclamation point.

Make sure you have the right drivers (XP 32-bit)
Also, make sure you only install the driver, not the software suite.

    And, you're running SP3, right?

Yeah, I hooked it up correctly, at the slot closest to the left (outside). Also all wires are labeled quite well. Also, I installed the latest drivers on Intel's site, with the corresponding platforms. Yes, SP3 also. I would consider myself a pretty technical person, so I'm very sure it's a bad card (or maybe an HP card that the seller wasn't aware of). The seller has said he'll give me a refund, and I've already ordered another one from a US seller. (I wish I had found out about amazon selling them, before I ordered the second one this morning).

Anyway, thanks everyone, I'll update when I get the new one.

I ordered another Intel 5300, this time from a USA seller and it came in today. The card was stated to be an ES card, but I put it in and it worked great. So the first card was either bad or an HP card that the seller didn't know/list as. Everything is good now, but still trying to get a refund for the first one.

    Thanks everyone!
