I ordered a GS60 2PL from gentechpc and received it recently. I was led to believe that the gs60 had a very good IPS panel.
However, the viewing angles on the laptop I received were not amazing, so I downloaded HWInfo64 and looked at the monitor.
It shows a Chi Mei CMN15C0, N156HGE-EA1 screen (screenshot below), which is supposedly TN.
Am I right in thinking that there should have been a IPS panel on this laptop?

As far as I can tell: no, it does not come with an IPS screen. The only models touting an IPS panel appear to be those equipped with the 4K screen. Have you talked with their support about it? -

Can you let us know the full model number since there are a few variations of the GS60 model. Who told you it was IPS, was it a member here or your reseller directly? As Prostar mentioned only the 4K versions come with an IPS screen.

Curious, how does it appear to compare to this review linked below? Scroll down and he shows his viewing angles. Mine look just like his, I'll report back with my screen model.
I'm not familiar with the 2PL variant, a full model number would help. Is it an 850m model?

Following up, MSI must put a different screen in some or all of that particular 2PL model (Maybe to keep cost down? No idea, maybe just use different sources, I've never read a review of that model). I just checked, and I've got the SAMSUNG 156HL01-102, which according to Gentech's post in the main GS60 thread: "The screen is Samsung 156HL01-102 (SDC324C) , they can't call it IPS because IPS is trademark from LG. but it's IPS equivalent." See around page 12 in the main thread.
So, appears MSI changed screens for that model and that's the confusion. -
Yes, the technology you want is "wide-viewing angle", whatever the manufacturer's patented term. Samsung's designation is SPS, but a Chi Mei Innolux would've been AAS (for Azimuthal Anchoring Switching ...
). The OP's specific screen, however, is certainly
not an AAS-type;
N156HGE-EA1 (viewing angle ~45°, clearly a TN).
Check the receipt (or reseller's specifications), if it says " wide viewing angle" or " IPS" you're good to RMA.
If not, you're left with an aftermarket swap. Made a list of matching panels (the TN's first of the list). All 15.6" 1080p, 2-lane eDP, 30pin connector, WLED backlight and standard mounting holes ( with wide-viewing angle technology, obviously). Ditched a few with poor sRGB gamut and some due to incomplete specifications. Also, Panelook does not list lcd connector location (bottom-left vs. bottom-right). The current Chi Mei's bottom-right, so verify this before ordering.

The version I have is the GS60-012 version available from Gentech at MSI GS60 Ghost-012 nVidia GTX850M - GenTech PC. This is the 850m version.
I got the idea that the screen is IPS (or equivalent) from reviews and also the posts on the gs60/70 thread.
From the thread:
I believe the confusion comes from the fact that MSI decided to change the screens on some 1080p models.
The only place that Gentech itself mentions the screen is in its video review, in which it says the screen is a SDC324C. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raFVNWVkDbE&t=8m53s)
Thanks for the information. I will contact Gentech, but I'm guessing that I will have to switch out the screen myself. I just hope no one else is confused like me. -

We do our best to list the panel type with the models we sell, if anyone is currently looking, call and ask your reseller any questions before ordering.
You should be able to swap it yourself at least Jsorrell414 since it looks to use the same connector as the IPS displays.
