So just how bad is the fan noise? (compared with the competition?)

    Hello all,

So I posted a version of this also in the Razer forum, as I wanted to have a more complete picture.

I know there's been a few threads sorta dancing around this topic, but I want one to be fully about it. My main concern about this laptop is the fan noise. Notebookcheck doesn't seem to mark it as insanely loud (52 db), but many people in this forum said they said the Blade didn't sound as loud, even though Notebookcheck marked it at 60db . Could someone shed some light on this? When I go to my parent's house on vacation, my brother and I have our desks next to each other, and I would be kinda bummed if I had something which sounded like a vacuum cleaner (as described by another poster) annoying him.

    Thanks!

EDIT: Oops! Forgot to include. I was looking at GS60 (with 1080p screen, if that changes anything). Sorry for the lack of information!

Well, no way to answer until you tell us what laptop you are looking at... MSI has a very wide range of machines with totally different cooling designs, both new and used..... no way to know which machine you are considering.

I can't give you a db number, but I do have a GS60 with a 970m. And it's fairly loud under load. But, I don't think it's excessive. It's far from being as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Honestly it's quieter than a hair dryer on low. When I had my Alienware M17x R2 it had a much more robust cooling system and it was a good bit louder. So I wouldn't worry about it.

The GS are the thinnest of the models MSI offers but I would say its probably the loudest fan as well. Its a trade off that you make for the thin chassis. You still need to keep the components cool. Its very quiet while doing basic things and the CPU/GPU are not stressed, but under load you will notice the fans kick up. Also it depends on your environment and other background and ambient sounds you have.

I see, thank you for your replies! Is there a way to keep it from reaching "max setting"? For example, if I cap the CPU to 99% and use a Cooler, could I keep the fans frm ramping up? Additionally, how much control do I have over the fan? Can I choose different prfiles?

If you game on it expect max fan noise. Outside of gaming then it shouldn't be a problem.

You can't manage the fans on the GS60 sadly. From my personal experience the fan stays around 2800 rpm under web browsing and any other not stressful sessions. And don't let anyone full you that you will hear the fan. It's not loud though. But again it is noticeable. If you were to use a laptop cooler that would drown out the fan on the laptop when under light loud. If you want something thin and light it's a solid choice.

I always limit my framerate to 45 or 60 fps depending on the game out of habit over the years, and it helps quite a bit with temps/fan speeds on any laptop. Having said that, on the GS60, both temps and fan noise are totally fine when even pushed all the way IMHO.

You can control the fan profile by using SVET's very easy to use tool, but as mentioned above, idle speed (ie lowest you can set due to the fan hardware) is 2800rpm. Anything above that though, you have full control.

Good luck in your search, the GS60 is hard to beat for the size/price/performance.
