yes it's great i found the exact same battery on my laptop
i need to know how i would remove the restrict of the 180W adapter off my MB so i can use more powerful adapter and remove the hybrid power feature

I just had a thought. I think you can just remove the battery and that bypasses the Hybrid. Kind of a pain to do every time, but I don't think you can disable it. I have heard of some people just going with a 240 watt adapter, have you tried that?

I had an issue with just removing the battery. When you game or benchmark, performance drops without the battery. Is it okay to always have NB on w/ battery in and plugged in?

you are correct because the system relies on hybrid power system to pump power to GPU when on demanding tasks.you can't remove it and expect the same performance
that's why i was asking here about a way to remove the 180w+battery cap and go on with a more powerful adapter and disable hybrid power feature
and we need to know if our motherboard is ready for such a modification

Hi. Has someone succesfully upgraded a GT60 2OD's 780m to a 980m? I just love my lappy, no blue screens, no issues with display, BIOS, ports, etc. so I just want to upgrade it, not buy another one. My main concerns are:

    1) Power - Are the 180w enough for the 980m? Without overlcocking, I've seen 200w consumption with the 780m. With OC, consumption can go higher (even crashing when I use a 60% wear battery, which means that power consumptions goes avobe 210w)

    2) Heat - The 780m is hot. I usually use turbo fans when I game, so I get no more than 75° on GPU. Is very loud, but also safer for my lappy.

I know that upgrading to 970m has an improvement and cooler temps than 780m, but just not sure about 980m.

Am I doing my NB harm by always having it powered on w/ battery in? If that is the case I will purchase a 2nd battery when mobile. I am also interested in this power mod!

from my own experience ? yes you are doing harm . my battery lost like 40-50% of it's performance due to me always keeping it on the laptop . and if you get a second battery , it will drain too .
the ideal solution is the power modification , to get a more powerful adapter , so we don't need battery to pump the required power juice to CPU/GPU while we're gaming
i hope someone reply to us soon

The EC currently restricts brick draw to 180W so with it stock you wont get any help from a larger brick.

It's the system bios which impacts this and no since it's not an official card.

ok meaker . is there a modded Bios or a modded EC we can flash that would enable us to bypass the restrict on power adapter limited to just 180w to be drawn from it ?

The drivers do overclock - I've overclocked 350.12 but on a 680M; can't say if OC works on the latest hardware.

Yes, 350.12 can OC the 970m/980m. Only reaching +135mhz to core

    Hello everyone,

The GTX 675M died in my Alienware M17X R4, so i bought a 6GB 970M. The card is brand new, but does not work. It is detected in the BIOS, passes the diagnostic tests, but neither windows or Nvidia drivers can detect it. It shows the card as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" in the device manager, and says "Compatible hardware not detected" while trying to install the latest Nvidia drivers. I don't understand what is going wrong. I bought the card from Nvidia, so how can it not be detected by its own driver. I am desperately in need of help. I know this is a MSI thread, but I hope the issue is the same.

This is the Hardware ID : VEN_10DE&DEV_13D8&SUBSYS_05511028

So wait is there a link to a modded 350.12 driver for my gt60 barebones 980m? Oh and I noticed there is an MSI GT60 with a 980m, the GT60 2QE 4k I think. Would that mean I can stop using modified drivers or not because I have a GT60 16F4?

Firestrike score of 9184 with +200 on core, +250 on memory

    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/4604926

I repasted with IC Diamond after my previous repaste with Shin Etsu as the IC diamond is clearly better, got the CPU at 80° C on 32x multiplier 4 cores and the 980m at 75° C OC +150 core during heavy gaming sessions (several hours of BF4 and GTAV temps do not go above those figures, custom fan profile around 80%.

I can push CPU to 33x or 34x with an increase in temps to 83° c and 87° respectively but I don't need it, I'm not seeing any CPU bottlenecks in any games I'm playing.

Still a bit disappointed with myself, I should have bought a 2860qm rather than the xm chip as the increased TDP is doing nothing but creating heat and stopping me from running 4 cores higher for longer, got a good price on the 2960xm though, cheaper than the very scarce 2860qm's that I could find so hey ho, I'm happy overall as I've found ultimate stability (consistent hours of gaming without any crashes) with this machine now with the 330w power supply, the performance of the 980m is very impressive.

I quite don't understand your answer.
I mean, with stock vbios, i don't need modded drivers. So i was thinking maybe just an unlocked vbios based on MSI vbios was ok.

Nvidia 350.12 is on Nvidia website. just updated my drivers.. Other than Grand theft auto support, I can see in nvidia settings that there is a "Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration support". so does this mean that this driver supports 4k resolution or softmod for our laptops?

You can name the GFX processor whatever you want - just have to disable the driver signature enforcement as the WHQL is lost.

Question : from what prema told me, MSI cards ( wich i own ) are undervolted (0.981v). What is the default clevo voltage for 970m ?
    I can't stabilise my 970m past 240mhz, even with a big bump on vcore ( 1.025v ).
If MSI cards are heavily undervolted, i think i can push the vcore.

    [edit] i found. it's 0.993mv default.

    Hi guys,

I got a GTX 980m from MSI upgrade for my GT70 0ne (Ivy bridge).
Actually, I have a problem with Windows 8...

My bios is .71x and my EC T24 all for 1762.

I can easily install driver for intel HD 4000 but when I install my nvidia driver (modded or not) and I reboot, Windows start on a black screen...

    Same results on Windows 8.1.

I think there is a conflict between GTX 980m driver and intel HD 4000 but I don't know what I have to do...

May you help me please ?

    Thanks a lot..

My guess is that you are running into some sort of compatability issue between the MSI vBIOS and your system BIOS. The mod works fine with a Clevo card running Clevo vBios, but I am not sure about how an MSI card would react in an IVY bridge system with MSI system BIOS.

From reading other users forum posts, it appears others have flashed MSI 980m 8GB cards with PREMA mod vBIOS, and therefore I would assume the Clevo vBIOS and the unlocked Prema vBIOS should work perfectly for you.

https://biosmods.wordpress.com/mxm-vbios/ --- Credit all to PREMA

These will also unlock your voltage and clock/memory controls for heavy overclocking if you so desire.

From what I have read on another users post, it appears that the MSI 980m was flashed fine with PREMA mod vBIOS/Clevo vBIOS. I would say that may help your issue since most of the systems with IVY bridge system BIOS were using a Clevo vBIOS/Clevo card for their upgrade.

After the vBIOS change you will most likely have to install the GPU with the modded INF drivers.

Hi Everyone, all of you have made me spend $750 to upgrade my GT 60 2pc Dominator from GTX 870M to GTX 980M and Thank you so much for that :). I have already got the GTX 980M from RJTech and now it's time to do the final upgrade. I am planning to make a video of the entire process from BIOS update to final driver installation. But just for the confirmation of all of you experts out here, I am outlining my steps in case I am missing something. By the way, I've read all the 165 pages of this thread o_O.

    1. Update my NB BIOS from E16F4IMS.50R to 50V and then to E16F4IMS.51A (Latest on MSI Website)
    2. Update my NB EC Firmware from 16F4EMS1.510 to 16F4EMS1.517 (Latest on MSI website)
    3. Uninstall the NVidia GTX 870M graphic drivers and shutdown.
    4. Apply the Mod to GTX 870M heatsink
    5. Apply thermal pads (I am planning to use old ones already in the laptop and that will be on the Clevo heatsink) and Thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5)
    6. Power on the system and hopefully the system will automatically detect the GTX 980M in the process.
    7. Download and installed the latest drivers from Nvidia website.

As I mention earlier, I'll try to document everything on camera and if I do successfully, I would request Talon (The Celebrity Guy) to provide the link on the first page for future references.

Guys thank you all for such an awesome threat and plz let me know if I am missing something.

The update is, I have successfully installed the GTX 980M in my GT60 2PC Dominator and I've made video of each step along the way. I will edit the video and hopefully tomorrow or day after tomorrow I'll upload the videos. Currently, I have tested it's stability and it seems stable except one BSOD in almost 5 hours of testing. I have installed the regular Nvidia driver 350.12 from their web site with no problem. My laptop has CPU i7-4700MQ and my Firestrike score are 7639

    and skydive scores are 19787

Both of these scores are not in the higher expected end of GTX 980M. Any body has any suggestions regarding improving my score. The main thing that I am experiencing is the temperature which jumps quickly to 86C/87C and stays there. I have used Arctic Silver 5 and I think I did a good job in thermal paste and pads. I'll upload the video and then let me know of pasting job. In Heaven Valley the scores were 1020 again towards the lower side. I am using Clevo vBIOS and didn't change that.

    BIOS: E16F4IMS.51A
    EC Firmware: 16F4EMS1.517
    GT60 2PC Dominator
    Default Clevo BIOS

On a side note, Steel series and HDMI both are working fine. I haven't tested Display Port.
