It will power up but the fan might be spinning like crazy until you put a GPU in there. Then it will behave normal.

A modded bios lets you put it into IGP mode and makes the fan behave like normal.

Can you tell me how to go about doing this in the bios? I have an unlocked modified bios from and would like to experiment on this just in case I decide to sell my GPU in the future

Yes you can, but as zipperi said the fan will spin at full speed.
If you can get an unlocked BIOS which allows you to change the display to Intel HD graphics then you can stop the fan from doing full speed.
For unlocked BIOS requests, you can check with Svet directly at MSI forum.

    Hello to everyone.
This is extremely good thread :).
I have one question. I have MSI GT680 laptop with MS-16f2 mainboard and have gtx970m gpu on hand.
What would be the best heatsink? I think the best would be this one for gtx680m but i am not sure.
    Thanks for advice

Sorry but have one more question.
Is bios 1.0Z and EC 4.24 enough for ms-16f2 and gtx970m???

My 970m is here and i noticed my heat sink might not screw properly into place with the X brack on the 970m back side.
Did did one here remove the X brack? or am i doing some thing wrong? The screw from my heat sink will not come off and the 970m was supplied with screws as well

@Aladin Thomas it's in the long list of options in the unlabelled arrow of the first page, change graphics mode from SG (switchable graphics) to IGP.

@feelgeorge13 yes you have to remove the xbracket, retention is sorted by the posts on motherboard.

But now "Turbo" button is not working, and MSI VGA Overclock tool in my tray says "enabled" and I can't change it.

May be there is another utilities for 980m?

Talon, you can add my specs to your post on first page.
Also I think link to shop from where it was bought will be very helpful for many people.

Has anyone modified there fan curve using Svets custom firmware/vBios tuner? If so what settings did you use? The exhaust on my GT70 seems to get pretty hot.

Use infrared sensor to check the temperature, if it's too high then you will need to increase the fan speed.

So, things were working well for a while but no I'm running into this issue with every game I try to launch through steam:
    upload_2015-6-19_19-24-40.png

    -Failed to create D3D device!

I've tried various tricks such as manually setting the width x height and checking to see if D3D was enabled via the dxdiag menu..... problem is that in the dxdiag menu, it only lists the laptop integrated intel card and not the video card.

For everything outside of steam it seems to work just fine. There are no driver updates available that I can find (even tried running a check on the nvidia experience control panel with no results). Has anyone had any issues similar to this? If so, any known fixes?

"DMTwo" I have bought mine heatsink for gtx970/980m on this site... http://m.ebay.de/itm/261920890248

Are you sure yours is dedicated to this gpus??? Mine was almost 100% more expensive... but it is 100% dedicated...no need to work on it.
    Give me a feedback :).

eh guys, I've got a question... This model " GT60 2QE Dominator Pro 4K Edition" doesn't have the " NOS" feature built on it ?

If It doesn't have NOS technology meaning this nb can use a 240 watts or maybe 330 watts ac adapter on it? thanks

    Will do.

Are you sure of this? I checked and the BIOS and EC firmware vs the GT60 2OD are the same. As I understand the "NOS" feature is built into the EC firmware? If they're the same EC version for the 2 laptops, I don't see how one would have NOS and the other not have it.

Gave the display driver uninstaller a try (via safemode) and still no luck.
The card will display in the Device Manager alongside the intel integrated display and the driver seems to have installed just fine. DXDiag still will not display the videocard as a display option though, thus I can't check/force D3D to the card.
I've also tried uninstalling/reinstalling directx with no luck there.

    *Note*
The only other option I can think of is that it could be due to me using Windows8 drivers on a Windows7 OS? If thats the case then the only way I can test to verify will be to wait until the Windows10 roll-out and try again with Windows 10 drivers.

Alien isolation, Shadow of mordor,Titanfall,Ryse son of Rome. Dying light , AC IV black flags.
I removed some old games like BF3 & 4 and COD: AW
The 970m is a good card, i am thinking of the 980m now but I will wait and see what AMD does with there M390X if its any thing like there Fury range then it will be a bad ass card

Eh bud long time no hear from you.. Anyways here's the link from msi http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GT60-2QE-Dominator-Pro-4K-Edition.html#hero-overview

I don't see the "NOS" feature except for the cooler boost 2 though.. Would you mind checking it again? I know that "NOS" is a drawback cos you can't use a more powerful adapter other than the stock that came with it though. Thanks

Anything below throttle, it's set before critical degradation occurs. After that is the cooler the chip the longer the lifespan.

AHHHH how to add a picture from computer on that forum. I can only put pictures from internet!!!

If You look closer...there is one block in genuine gtx 970/80m heatsink that is missing in other heatsinks. It means that one part of cart doesn't touch radiator and all the heat is not taken away.

So you are saying the only difference is the small metal bit that is missing from the original GT70/60 heat sink, which most of us habe grinded away.
Wondering if there any performance difference btw the GT60/70 mofified heat sink and the GT70 970m/980m heat sink

Everything goes about this small part. Some gtx970/80m have it...some doesn't... i have no idea what is a difference between them. If your gpu doesn't have this part...then...modded sink is as good as genuine one.

I am making a video, on how to upgrade your msi gt60/70 to a 970m/980m. I have loads of pictures and few mins of video clips
Gpu life will depends on your cooling solution/ GPU card. I am so impressed with my 970m, then again it is a 75 watt card just like my 770m compared to a 980m which is a 100watts and will produce more heat. There is a trade off btw a better performing card and heat.
Calling on all 980m users, whats is your temperation on idle and in gaming!!

I only bought this heatsink because my GTX 670M doesn't have the bridge to CPU heatsink.
I believe that this can balance the temps between this two components.

If I haven't found a new heatsink I would probably mod it, but the price was also ok, so I give it a try.

Now I'm just waiting for my card, probably I'll get it by the end of the next month...

This NB comes with 230W AC adapter, but the EC firmware still limits the power intake, so if you use a 330W the actual throughput will still be capped at 230W.

Using Furmark to stress test it for an hour, the max GPU temperature is 62 C for 980M, and this is in a room with AC present.

I have a MSI 16f3 barebones notebook that came with a 180 watt adapter. I was thinking of getting the 330 watt adapter too. Can someone tell me if I got it, would the extra watts be accessible or is there some kind of EC firmware modification that has to be done first to make the extra watts usable?

The extra wattage will not be accessible, the limitation is done on the hardware-side which restricts the intake to 230W.
Only MSI can unlock such restriction but they probably won't do it.

So given that my current adapter is 180 watts, are you saying that I could access another 50 watts from a 230 watt adapter? Please let me know. Also would 50 watts make a difference when trying to overclock my GTX 980M? Because with my current 180 watt adapter, I don’t get better fps when overclocking.

Sorry, it will still be 180W but not 230W, unless it's the model that carries 230W.
The board design may be different, or EC detection is implemented depends on what GPU you have.

Ok, I understand what you’re saying. Hear me out, do you anything about overclocking? I can’t seem to get any performance boost when I overclock my GTX 980M. Also something else; ever since I changed my GPU, the turbo button no longer works

Which model do you have? And what's your current BIOS & EC versions?
What's your current benchmark score from the 980M?

For the 2QE model the board revision probably is different. It uses a 4k eDP display.
