Plus, Asus makes very good 17' gaming laptop and it seems until now they don't believe in higher resolution in their laptop.

Hey guys, today my GTX980m has just arrived from the mail. It is the model from the GT72 upgrade kit
To install this onto my GT60, may I ask which bios and vbioswould be the best for this, and where can I get it? Also, anything else that I need to keep in mind? Thank you guys

nvm guys, I have successfully done all the steps
...not sure if it's a bios issue or hardware but my fan is prone to go on high speed a lot more often now even though the temperature ain't even high yet... needs more testing

Apparently now while my GPU is functioning perfectly fine, I have run into a problem that my laptop fan only alternate between mild fan usage or turbo mode... nothing in between
It is incredibly infuriating where even open some basic CPU intensive task would suddenly and immediately kick my fan into max turbo mode from silent... it is incredibly loud and disorientating (and I didn't even use the GPU; while my CPU temp was just fine)
The firmware I updated to was E16F4IMS.51A; I haven't installed any new vBios yet. Anyone know how to fix this issue?

How much memory do you have?
I had same problem with 8Gb, but 16Gb solved it.

One reason: If you have used 1.0 mm pads in the GPU then heat sink makes poor contact with the GPU and fan keeps spinning on even a small gaming sessions.
Second reason: You have not upgraded you EC firmware. This number that you mentioned is your BIOS version. So, make sure that you upgrade to latest EC Firmware as well.

I've used windows 10 especially for BF4. But for some reasons, every game was only able to run in windowed mode otherwise it would crash. It is almost 2 months ago. But other than that every thing regarding upgrade was fine.

I haven't tried with the latest nvidia drivers so may be the problem is gone. Anyhow, I'll upgrade to the windows as soon as it arrives. Because, I want to see if DirectX12 does any good for the existing games or not.

Thanks for the reply, the thermal pad I have used is the pre-included one that came with my heatsink purchase that were designed specifically for this laptop model and the GTX980m. Previous members on this thread recommended it and have used it for the upgrade with no problems; so I don't think this would be an issue with the thermal pad as my temperature has also been fantastic so far.
Also, I have just tried to update the EC firmware to the latest one; but the problem still persist.
I am thinking of updating my vbios; but can't find any tutorial on how to do it with the .rom files the first post has provided

EDIT01: From what I have seen, the fan seems to kick in turbo when application that requires GPU usage are left opened up for a while... even when the gpu is not under any sort of load and is absolutely cool... it seems to be time-based for the fan to kick into turbo mode as long as the GPU is being used. The fan does not get crazy if none of my application uses the GPU
I will have to try updating my Vbios... anyone know a guide on how to update it with the rom file?

    Hey.

The card will work perfectly on your laptop. But you need the 71x bios and EC provided by Svet on the MSI forums. He is a really great guy and very helpful. You just need to give him a small donation :p(beer money). After flashing the bios and ec you receive from him you just switch your existing graphics card with the new one and install the latest modded .inf drivers. Or from what some users have said lately it might now even work directly with the latest Nvidia drivers from the site.

    Hello everyone!

I'm running into a weird issue after upgrading my laptop GPU to a 970M. As soon as I install the Nvidia drivers (tried modded and stock drivers), the computer loads fine, till the login screen, then my laptop monitor goes blank. Here's the kicker though, I get proper display on my external USB monitor. Everything displays fine there.

Initially, I thought it might be the USB monitor drivers causing an issue. So I unplugged it and uninstalled the drivers. With no luck, only this time I had no way of controlling the laptop (had to reset into safe mode, which loads fine).

If I uninstall the Nvidia drivers, everything displays fine on the laptop monitor (at a really low resolution though, since there are no drivers)

Any help would be appreciated. The vBios should be flashed for MSI laptops, even the stock drivers installed without throwing an error, so I'm assuming that means the vBios matches?

The laptop is an MSI GT 70 0NE (Model: 276us) it came preinstalled with Windows 7 and a 680M. The 680 burnt out a few months ago. So I had gotten this 970M to replace it.

My current bios version is E1762IMS.30M. The latest version for the Windows 7 GT70 0NE's on the MSI laptop only goes up to 30U, which is from 2013, so I figured it wasn't going to make a difference.

I'm currently running windows 8.1 as well.

Thanks for taking your time to read this and I hope it can be fixed easily. :/

You need to talk to Svet on the MSI forums and get 71x bios and matching EC from him . It is a requirement for Ivy Bridge GT70's for them to work properly with the 900 series.

Ah. Is that the issue then? I thought updating the system bios wasn't a must unless you wanted to use stock drivers.

Posted on the MSI forums asking about the new bios.

    Thanks!

Yea for the card to be detected and work properly on the Ivy Bridge platform you need that special bios that only svet can give you.

    Ah. I see.

Just curious. Why would the second monitor work perfectly fine then? The card seems to be performing fine on it too. (It's a small screen though. )

    Thanks! :D

For that i do not have technical answer . But i have read through all of this thread a couple of times :p . So by now i know all the issues encountered by other users and yours is normal for the bios you are using. I guess it might be the way that old bios sends video signal to the built in display. Laptops can have i think something like 4-5 different ways of sending the signal to the inbuilt display. But it's just a guess.

guys i've been trying to change my laptop screen as i stated in a previous post earlier , and i tried to get the screen out the plastic chassis of the laptop . when i finished examining the screen and wanted to reassemble the chassis again and close it , i discovered that i broke some plastic little hinges that hold the front removable face of the chassis to it's back ( i highlighted the broken small hinges in green )

so i would like to get some adhesive double sided tape like the one holding the chassis together
    ( highlighted in red ) .

from where could i get it ? and does anyone has a proper solution to this problem ? because my screen frame is starting to fall from the right side every time i move the laptop from one place to the other .

Woo! Svet set me up with the proper bios and EC. Everything seems to working perfectly now! So happy. Been waiting so long to replace my old burnt GPU.

Don't think I'll be overclocking anything since I live in a really hot country, and my room is really hot too. Though so far on idle the 970 is hovering around 44 degrees, which is actually better than my old 680.

I'll test it under load over the next few days.

What kind of benchmarks do you want me to do? I'll post up the results!

Thanks again Alex for pointing me in the right direction!

    Hi all! I have MSI GT70 2OD(> 2QE) + MSI GTX980M 4GB (MSI BIOS 84.04.22.00.0c). All works fine!
I find in official MSI website (GT72 2QE-G) new vBIOS with G-SYNC (84.04.48.00.24). Its work for me?

    Hey guys
Earlier I have succeeded in upgrading the GT60 to a gtx980m, although with some fan issue but it was working flawlessly
today I have just decided to reseat and repaste my gpu properly; ensuring every bit as precise as possible hoping the fan issue would be fix
Upon reconnecting the battery and turning the power on... the gpu was now no longer usable
I have tried to DDU it and reinstall the Nvidia driver again but it seems like my hardware can't detect the gpu anymore unlike before
anyone know how to fix this?

I downloaded the official driver for windows 10 from the nvidia website but after sometime gaming it switches automatically to the integrated graphics. It might just be my laptop or the drivers for win10 is still needs work. Right now im using win7 as the main reason for me trying windows 10 was the DirectX 12 which is not available for use yet.

my windows 10 says that directx 12 is in use, but I tried every driver I found and it is just won't install (original Clevo vBIOS).

If I flash to MSI vBIOS - drivers is installing, device manager detect 980M but in fact it does not work at all. All games just don't see it.

I remember somebody had same issue with Win 8 here but can't find it now.
    What can be a problem?

The drivers provided by nvidia installed without any problems for me but the problem i was having with the driver is just as you described. 10-15 mins ingame it switched back to the integrated graphics. The fps would suddenly drop ingame and the power button turn white though there was no problem with the card at all.The problem i think is windows 10 itself. We will have to wait for a better driver support or get help from an expert which unfortunately im not. :/
Right now while using windows 7 the problem is opposite. My power button is always glowing red. :/
Anyone has any ideas how to fix that?

I have not performed any benchmarks. Is benchmarking necessary because i have already tested in on games. I have played DAI and Witcher in high setting without any problems. The only problem im facing is that the orange light is always on even if there is no gpu activity.

Yes i did follow all the instructions step by step. The drivers provided by nvidia installed perfectly so i didn't bother trying the modded ones.
I think the problem is some hidden application or command which triggger the orange light to be always on. As long as it doesnt brick my pc im ok with it :vboops:. I've googled this topic and found few others with the same problem but no solution. I guess i'll just have to use it like this.. :vbconfused:
