    Hi,

I tried to upgrade my 16f2 with a 970m Clevo card using my old 7970m heatsink but apparently is does not fit.

Anyone knows how to fix that or where to buy a new heatsink?

    Many thanks

    Hello everyone,

I just upgraded my (win7) GT780DX-406US GPU to a MSI 970m, everything went smooth (plug n' play) only issue was when I updated my driver to the latest update, my 'P1 VGA overclock' stopped working (it'll turn on for a few seconds then it'll turn off) I did a little research and did the 'privelege/admin method' and that did not work either. All driver and utilities is updated. So am I stuck with just using the MSI inspector from here on out? Thank You and I would appreciate any feedback✌️

Look on page 1 on this post. you can see how to dremel your heatsink for the Maxwell gpu mxm board to fit in with your heatsink.

    Thanks,
I managed to install it and its posting ok.

I am struggling with the Nvida drivers though. I managed to install a modded version (which apparently was for Windows 8). The drivers get installed, but a warning appears at the Device Manager for the 970M card and it does not work (gpuz shows only 2990mb of memory and clocks at 0Hz).

Are there any modded drivers that work on Windows 10? Shall I update the vbios or my msi bios?

My current set up is 16f2 (msi unlocked bios) + Clevo 970M.

    Many thanks

    Hi guys.
Im new to the forum, reading this thread more an dmore in the last year.
April 2015 my GT70 started to show me blue shades on the display.
Actually im playing cause games i play havent so much black parts (black become blue shaded).

Ok, i decided, finally, to change GPU and upgrade to the GTX 970m.
I read the post on page 1 and i think to have almost everything clear.

    - I'll buy the card at R&J (actually they sell the card without the heatsink, but this should not be a problem, true?
    - I need the modded BIOS from Svet (already put my request on MSI Forum)
    - I need vBIOS for the Clevo card (where? the link on page 1 doesnt provide any files)

I dont have clear just one passage.
Do i have to upgrade the BIOS to the last MSI original BIOS and then flash the modded one?
Or i just need the get the modded bios?
    Actually i have the E1763IMS.50C bios (22-7-2013)
Can i put the modded .50C or i have to upgrade to the latest BIOS and then use the modded one?

    Rod

    Hello everyone,

I have a GT780DX-406US w/ MSI 970m installed, was wondering how you guys overclock your GPU -Nvidia Inspector wise (what base and memory offsets and other settings you guys do). If you guys use a better OC software I would like to know your settings too. Thank You

Are the modded drivers supposed to work on Windows 10? When I filter by Windows 10 from the first post message it can not find anything.

    Thanks

I'll help you to mod the driver.
    1) Download the Windows 10 driver and send me the file nvmii.inf inside the Display.Driver folder, creat a ZIP file to attach it here;
    2) Take the device ID of your card under the hardware properties like the picture below:

    GTX 980M Device ID.PNG

After that I can mod the file and send it to you.

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

what MSI laptop is this ?
AFAIK none of them should need a modified driver (though, sure you can still use one, but what's the point. You usually just need a bios fix and thats that, latest ones available from the retailer/manufacturer etc..)

    Many thanks, now it works!

I'm not getting more than 6300 in 3dMark11 though and apparently some throttling is happening (I guess the 2670qm should not be that bad). Any suggestions?

    Try
Try to use ThrottleStop 6.0 to lock your processor at full speed, this will help you getting higher scores and also will improve games performance.

The maximum GPU temperature I noticed was 87C. It should not be an issue, I guess the 970M just prevents to go above normal clocks above the temperature target but not throttle down the standard clocks.

The CPU temperatures were low, I need to monitor the CPU use, it's the one I suspect more.

That's not so bad - not enough to warrant throttling, anyway. It's probably software related. I would still advise cleaning it out and even a repaste, but if you're okay with those temps, they're safe.

Fixed. It was GPU throttling. The thermal compound and heatsink installation was poor. Now is scoring 7950 in 3dMark 11 and barely hitting 65C, it's an absolute beast! Thanks!

@DMTwo is there any link about how to mod those 2 files for future drivers?

The INF file that worked was took from LaptoVideo2Go, when a new driver is released, usually took 2-3 days to get a modded inf in the forum.

you can access it here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

Hello, I've spent several hours searching the thread to find an answer but no luck. I currently have a win 10 gt70 2od 407us with BIOS e1763ims. 10b. I'm guessing my BIOS is super old since all the files available on the msi website are for 5xx or 7xx. I don't think I can skip versions without risking bricking my laptop. Is there a way to backup or make a copy of my current 10b BIOS? Please advise. Thanks!

***edit*** After a bit of further clicking around I choose the Win7 64bit drop down menu on MSI's website and it has the 1xx BIOS files. I was initially looking at the files under Win8 and 8.1. :p I assume it doesn't matter if I have win10 64 and use the bios for win7 64?

    Hi

I've currently got an MSI 2QD and I'm looking to upgrade the graphics card, currently I've got an Nvidia GTX 970 3GB card in there but looking to upgrade to a Nvidia GTX 980 8GB Card - can someone advise me if it is just a simple case of plugging the new card in and downloading the official Nvidia drivers and it working straight away or is there any mods to the drivers that I need to be aware of?

If someone could let me know as soon as possible that would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

You would be correct. You can install Windows 10 on the computer with a Windows 7 BIOS installed.

In your case, it should be a case of plug and play. NOTE: You have a 970 m and you can upgrade to 980 m, not to the desktop version 980 that exists in the GT72/GT80 laptops.

I believe the heatsink is the same as well. Maybe someone else can comment.

It should work on windows 10. I helped a friend update his old barebones using this thread and the excellent people here as help/reference, and he went from 680m to 970m working in windows 10. I assume a new GT60 should have less issues. Maybe you need to first flash the latest BIOS/EC to make sure you are up to date, and fully upgrade to win 10 and confirm everything is working. Since you already work with a 970m, I do believe 980m would not require anything in particular but a simple swap of the GPUs.

That doesn't mean it will work nicely with win10, if you have any issues already.

GT6x/7x 2QD (970m) and 2QE (980m) models are the same notebook with the same motherboard but different GPUs. Yours should be plug-n-play with both BIOS and heatsink ;)
We older model owners needed a BIOS update and a heatsink mod.

@Owners of GT780DX models who upgraded to a 970m, what BIOS and EC version did you use? It's been 1.5 years since I installed the 980m in my GT60 and a friend is doing the same with his 780DX and a 970m and since I am going to do it, I'll need to be prepared before hand :D

    Hallo.
Well, no one reply to my post, but, ok, lets go further.

I bought the card and modded the heatsink and put new thermalpads when replacing the card.
First boot ok, i had to wait that Windows 10.64 took the drivers for the GTX 970m newly installed and finally it appeared on the system.

Actually im downloading nVidia drivers, cause 3DMark11 was running so slowly (6 to 7 fps).

I still havent understood if i have to put vBios into the card.
And also if i have to upgrade my GT-70 Bios and EC firmware.
Last, its regular that the card is going PnP, so maybe i dont need any vBios?

Can anyone please answer these questions?

I'm not sure a MXM would be considered PnP. If it came with the correct vBIOS already, you should be fine - but if not, you'll need to flash it (and this usually has to be done before loading the driver for the card).

I would go back and re read the OP. It should give you specific directions. It's been revised and updated many times. I had help with my install. System bio should be updated first. I also have the 970m and there was no need to update my Vbios as the Clevo Vbios on the card worked fine.

I dont know yet. But as far as i've searched on the internet, there's a SMX2 not the MXM platform.. We'll it still is early to say that they're not going to use an mxm. Well , we will just have to wait first :)

The NVIDIA Quadro M5500 might be something to consider. It is MXM and it’s Maxwell. The downfall is that it uses 150 watt and as far as purchasing one goes I can’t find it anywhere on the web. The performance appears to be similar to the desktop GTX 980 for laptops so going from the GXT 980M to it would be a worthwhile upgrade

    Weel, update of my situation.
I took the vBIOS from Prema mod, for my gtx 970m.
Flashed (the falsher comes with the downloaded zip) and rebooted.
Everything fine. The card have been recognized and i installed the nVidia drivers.

    Actually it works perfectly.
    Havent attempted any overclock.

    So, just to say, 3DMark11 GTX770M = P 5252; with GTX970M = P9570

I am having som problems with my 770m, artifacts been going on for 1 year now, the gaming sucks!!!!
So because NVIDIA is lazy and not releaseing any new cards in 2016, I am thinking of buying 970m

I have GT70 2OC, so I can buy 970m on ebay but does it need a heatsink? Or you can use a heatsink from 770m? The cad is quite costly on ebay, around 500 usd....

The stock 770M heatsink will work with modifications. These mods are described in the first post of this thread.

    Yes, you can.
I did the same upgrade few days ago.
Same laptop GT-70 2OC, upgrading from gtx 770m to gtx 970m.
Same heatsink, just a little work with a dremel.

I bought mine at R&J Technology, as described in the first page.
    460 dollars.

Had to flash the Prema modded vbios to let the VGA be recognized correctly by the system.

    So, you can do it.

    " Updated to MSI vBIOS:

As I stated above at the beginning of the post I updated the graphics card to MSI vBIOS 6GB version. These vBIOS came from a GT72 laptop with a 6GB 970m card. If you get a MSI vBIOS to flash to your 970m or 980m make sure the memory sizes match!"

    MSI GT 70
    Mine is a gtx 670M 3GB GDDR5 and I don't know my Vbios version, Help! I want to install a 980x :D

Hi Guys - I manged to upgrade my MSI GT70 MS-1762 to a GTX 970m card thanks to the awesome support in this thread.

It has been going okay for a few months now, but lately I have been playing a lot of Overwatch and I get quite big FPS drops unles I run on medium graphics settings. I would have thought I could run this on a higher setting given its not the most demanding of games. Here are the results of my 3D mark

    http://www.3dmark.com/fs/8809567

My question is - What are the kind of results I should expect with the specs I have, is that score "normal" or am I likely experiencing CPU throttling or something along those lines?

I used the guide in this thread:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-and-play-drivers-gt60-70-ivy-bridges.789799/

To upgrade to the latest vbios from perma and also allow the nvidia drivers to install natively. My card is a clevo Nvida 970m

    Thanks in advance.
