What's not to like? The price. :D

Too rich for my blood, but a darn fine system. I'd grab one if I had the money.

High price but It is very tempting indeed. I think GTX 980 will really shine with single GPU systems like this one, which has the better cooling systems of the market.

Price? Not bad for the tech, and MSI is competitive..... But, Yep, yep, yep...... you got me there. I suppose some will find the price a bit much. :D

It's gonna be GOOD! (tempting the Ryzeki.... he KNOWS he wants it)

Well they beefed up the CPU cooling so the 6820hk would be happy, we will see if they do something for the desktop 980 :)

I agree, even though MSi makes one of the better machines around (currently topped only by Clevo, because desktop socketed CPUs, not anything else), the pricing has gone ridiculous and EVEN MORE so in Europe.

Ya I'm sure they will be able to control temps, but will it be at the expense of more fan noise? The special edition checks all the boxes for me...and then some ..... just nervous about the GPU especially since it is "first gen" untested. If it looks dicey I'll go for the cheaper 980m and buy my own nvme drives.

"First gen" in the sense that its made it way into this form factor with all the consequent limitations and new variables, heck ya. I'd think that this would be obvious.

The 980M is very similar, the board is capable of far exceeding 100W with firmware tweaking, moving up a little in TDP design and core count while maintaining good design margins is not making it a first go around.

Add that to the fact that MSI have been designing custom PCBs for the full GM204 chip since launch, the core will be fully characterized and most of its little quirks will be understood by the engineers at MSI.

So I would not count this as engineering a first gen, just like the 680M -> 780M -> 880M were not really generations, just iterations.

The GT72S DominatorPro G-Dragon-004 with Desktop GTX980 is here, still working on review and overclocking capabilities, here are some of the screenshots and benchmarks I've done so far:

Stock hardware configuration out of the box, I disabled G-Sync just to test the benchmark and the turbo fan was off:

CPU multiplier to 40X at 4GHz, Turbo Fan on:

    The screen is now 75Hz:

WOW, very nice scores, temps, and noise levels! Thanks Ken, for going the extra mile with all the info and pics! It looks like MSI has really done an excellent job with the new GT72S.

Now, where the heck is my new next-gen, dual desktop 980, GT80 gaming beast? ;)

Is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet? (....jumping up and down with excitement, bout to pee my pants....)

Yes the temperature is surprisingly good and still runs very quiet during benchmark unless you turn on Turbo Fan.

The PCB on GTX980 is very small so should be the high density and high quality one, we have seen some laptops uses huge and low quality PCBs but that's not the case here. Another thing is the screen is now 75Hz and it's LG IPS. :)

I am still trying to find the sweet spot for overclocking this beast, the thermal paste on the test is stock so I will try using IC Diamond to see how it performs. :)

Did you say GT80 with dual desktop 980? it's late here in California so I am going to bed, talk to you tomorrow. :p

Impressive scores, Ken) Does the unit also come with a standart 230W PSU? Is it possible to check the power draw with that overclock you achieved?

So we can clearly see additional power connector, but no SLI bridge, meaning they might use differend board design for GT80S.

Great information and testing results, huge improvement for that machine to test with an 11k score in its stock form. Makes me wonder how many watts is being pulled from the wall also to see if that ends up being your ceiling or the card its self.

Great info. The machine looks stunning. Would like to see the max temps ion this machine when it is tested o the extreme to actually judge the overclocking and cooling capabilities (CPU and GPU). It that's a check then this is the system to go for.

I believe there is an option of selecting the 330W PSU also right?

edit: Okay my mistake. Its the Clevo that comes with the option of choosing the 330W PSU. I suppose it has to do with the lesser TDP card used i.e the 980? I suppose a 230W PSU will do fine for a 120W card. How large will the difference in performance be is still a question though (80W difference).

It wasn't hidden, the max temperature shown on the MSI After Burner and it says 86C. There was too many Windows moving around and wasn't notice one of the Window covered the temperature on HWMonitor, but it will be shown on our review video:

Ken, could you please confirm what skylake GT72S models run their display at 75Hz? Do you think the previous model you reviewed had 60Hz because of drivers or 4Gb VRAM or smth else? Tnx

Doesn't seem to be the case with other GT72S and don't know why, maybe has something to do with G-Sync.

Also our detail video review is up, enjoy :)

WOW! Awesome notebook! Early GT72 models were nice, cool, quiet, and powerful, but now the new GT72S is on steroids and a whole new level of beastliness. Kudos Ken, again for an informative video, and 'thumbs-up' to MSI, for continuing to progress their line with gamer's in mind.

Speaking of BEAST, where is my new gaming Weapon of Mass Destruction..... the gaming notebook of the Gods, the new next-gen Skylake GT80?

Is it here yet, is it here yet, is it here yet?

    I want a minimum of 32Gb DDR4, SLI desktop GTX-980 GPU's, PCIe SSD (SuperRAID 4) primary storage, and a Core i7-6920HQ processor.

Work your magic, and make it happen Ken!

Excellent review. The temps on this machine are great for the kind of performance they would be delivering. Some gaming benchmarks would just make this so much more perfect :D
