    Hey guys,

I was wondering what my fellow 1651 users have done about the brightness of the matte displays. It is one of the very few drawbacks, but nonetheless is way to dim. My MSI wind is matte and has a very vibrant display, it is a shame they skipped out on the 1651.

Has anyone found a suitable workaround? Obviously a mod is out of the question.

all you can do is change out the display. matte displays are known for not being as bright as glossy ones are in notebooks normally (but not alwasy the case) the matte display msi uses imo is very dim. the glossy is very very nice though

I'd rather have a dim matte than a bright glossy, haha. It is totally possible to have a bright matte display. My old gateway and my new MSI Wind both have very bright screens. MSI just went cheap on these.

yes it is but they are much harder to come by than glossy ones. most matte ones today are pretty dim in comparison. if i am right it is a samsung panel and they are not know for bright panels to start with for notebooks though i may be wrong on the brand.

Mine doesn't bug me unless I have it next to my desktop's 24" BenQ :). But yes, even though I've only had matte screens before, it seems a little dim; however I didn't want a garish one as I feared the glossy one would be.

Anyway, under Winders (Windows 7 Beta that is) I fiddled about with the Nvidia Control Panel, and was eventually able to get nice settings. Don't forget to tweak "digital vibrance"! But I'm not sure that that did me as much good as Start -> Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Display -> Calibrate Color. It's looking real good to me at the moment, Oblivion looks nice now.

Under Linux (Arch), I ran nvidia-settings to tweak things, again, don't scrimp on the "digital vibrance" If you google around, you can find out how to get the Nvidia stuff you set up to auto load when you login, add
    "nvidia-settings --load-config-only"
to whatever startup scripts are used by your desktop manager (or you can launch nvidia-settings at the console & it will load your ~/.nvidia-settings-rc).

Hope that helps! I'm pretty happy with mine now, but I certainly see how others might like it much brighter, I just haven't liked the few glossy screens I've seen in stores though.

Me too. I had an MS-1651 with the WSXGA+ matte LCD before getting it refunded and now have an MSi GT725-074US glossy WSXGA+ screen, which I am VERY mcuh disliking since it many lighting conditions it reflects too much.

So much so that I'm looking for an aftermarket correction for this gross deficiency. Also, it really seems no birghter at all than I remember the MS-1651 matte screen being, or any other notebook that I've had (Apple macbook, powerbook, and ibooks).
