I'm currently looking in the $1500 price range for a gaming/multipurpose laptop and the GT60 and NP9150 are at the top of my list. For those of you that chose the GT60, why did you pick it instead of the Sager rival?

Nice thread, looks familiar
Clevo builders have announced that Clevo will no longer be supporting newer GPUs for older (EOL) laptops.
This means that if you choose the 7970m, you will likely be stuck with it or have the choice to upgrade to the 685m or 7990m while the AMD 8000m and Nvidia 700m series will (likely) be incompatible.
MSI on the other hand have simply had the most documented cases of a laptop being upgraded or tested with a card that the laptop was not released with and did not officially support. Modern Clevos will refuse to function with basic, 100% standard low end MXM cards.
Of course, the jury is still out, and no one has tried to upgrade an older Clevo to 7970m or a 600m series card. Several MSIs function flawlessly with the 7970m and none have failed to support it. -
I read MSI has just one fan for both gpu and CPU....while sager has one for each.
is that right?? -

Yes, but its a bigger fan, and the GPU has bigger heatpipes. Some sagers have been known to overheat, while most comparable MSI laptops do not.
The acer 3810tg also has 2 fans. Its a 13" laptop. They're tiny fans and together they couldn't cool the GPU alone on one of these laptops. See my point? -
Which Sagers do you think overheat? I know that the 9170 has much better cooling than the GT70 with similar hardware as I have compared them side-by-side.
-
2 different opinions...lol..
anyway am still stuck between Msi or 9170....I would like to know which really is better...
And any idea when Msi will get 7970...?? am waiting for it. -
How is the stock warranty of an MSI compared to a Sager? I thought I read that MSI even has one year accidental in the stock warranty, is that true?

It has been removed from the current gen laptops though to our knowledge.
believe it or not, the cooling and temps are about the same on these laptops. the only difference was that Sager decided on 2 fans (depending on the model, relevant to this thread the Sager does have dual fans) and MSI cools theirs with 1 fan. -
There are a few Sager threads where folks have been working on upgrading their GPU in their older machines as well.
Concerning the 600M series GPU, some folks were able to simply flash the vBIOS for the 570 and 580 to the 670 and 675 vBIOS so upgrading the physical GPU should be the same concept as they are simply the same card just rebranded. -

Okay, I should say the 7970m AND 6970m. That said the 7970m is working on the ms-16f2 at least. The gt60 and gt70 are basically the same laptop with an upgraded chipset.
The 6970m however is working on the MSI gx740 and gx660 as well as the 16f2 I'm pretty sure.
I don't really feel like digging out a bunch of old threads right now. If you don't believe me you should look for the threads yourself. Not to be a hypocrite but has anyone had success upgrading an older clevo yet? Where are the threads where they're working on it?
I tried a Quadro 3000m on my Clevo w870cu and I got nothing on screen and beeps after 30 seconds. It worked perfectly on an Acer.
You can't flash Kepler GPUs like the 660m and 680m, and I don't think the 570m or 580m will work in the w870cu or w860cu either, just a speculation. -

There are a lot of Sager laptops that have had issues cooling the 6970m, there are a lot of threads about it.

Sure, there is the issue of "maintenance" since apparently the fans get clogged a lot, but it sure seems like they need to be cleaned more often than usual. They should be designed to withstand a little dust and still manage to keep the gpu cool without being propped up. -
when will Msi be getting the 7970??? or will it ever get??
-
You will have to do some mods and implement you own 7970m. There is a forum all about it

Nah...I meant will it get one officially ....?

the 680m will take a lot of time....and will be costlier ...

I'm not sure why you're delivering such misinformation in this thread (Clevo's have problems with overheating now?), but you should not be doing that.
And the W8x0CU owners who are using 6970Ms would go against everything you've said. -

I really don't have anything to prove, you can talk to the resellers directly if you don't believe either of us, I just want the information to be known widely because Clevo resellers tend to advertise upgradeability, and in this case because I was asked why I chose MSI over Clevo.
The 6970ms in the w860cu and w870cu seem to be the 1 exception so far.
I'm not talking about official support. MSI obviously doesn't need to officially support all the cards that their laptops do in fact support despite the fact that they were never released with them, because they have proper MXM structure to handle all types of cards.
Clevo must have done something with the w860cu and w870cu specifically for the 6970m that they aren't doing anymore, something they used to do with their older laptops that supported more MXM cards. -

if the GT60 isn't almost a pound heavier than 9150, I would buy it already..
-
It has been a good laptop, but its cooling is substandard, and single fan as well. Not to mention the exhaust is blown right over your mouse hand (when right handed).
For that matter my ASUS G73 I just sold would over heat as well under heavy gaming loads, hence I have CM SF-19 cooling stands. All of my friends larger ACER laptops had over heating issues as well. So its not just a Sauger/Clevo or MSI issue.
These days though, systems will usually (or should) just clock down when heat is an issue. -

fan boost was a little surprising how loud that was.
I guess if it works that is what matters but comments from
owners saying you cant really hear it when gaming must have
their volume turned up to 11... -
as far as noise, when the turbo fan is kicked on, it is definitely noticeable but some of us have just learned to tune it out or wear a headset. -

GT60 is cheaper in price. Sager NP9150 can be upgraded to 675M GTX and AMD 7970 vga power.

I know it's hard, but you vendors need to try and keep up -
This may be the reason I get a GT70 rather than a Sager laptop. I just signed the petition for Sager as well.
Have you gotten your 7970M yet Meaker? I have been watching, I do see the link there but where are the pics of the GPU inside the MSI laptop?
those photos only seem to show benches but they were a bit small, was that really in the GT70?
I'll go back to lurking now. -
There are only so many hours in the day and so many threads I can hit.
Thanks for the link there Meaker. Now, I did see the 5870M and the heatsink mods but has anyone actually gotten their hands on the 7970M to install now?
I also still see you updated your sig to show it is on its way. We would love to see the whole setup.
Pau1ow has done a nice job, I do see where it is showing it is an MSI in the display with the 7970M. -

Should hopefully have it by Friday next week. Damn bank holidays for the jubilee on Monday and Tuesday are delaying it.
Why you chose GT60/GT70 over the Sager NP9150/NP9170
