    Hi,
Installing Win XP Pro on MS-1722. I get the following message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again,
    Follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer ... . Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers .... Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated .... Run CHKDSK /F to check
For hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    ( Technical information )

    *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524,0xC0000034,0x00000000, 0x00000000)

    It is barebone. I got
Sony Optiarc Slim 8X DVD±R Burner Black SATA Model AD-7590S-01 - OEM
    HITACHI Travelstar 5K320 HTS543232L9A300 (0A56417) 320GB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

Has anyone got similar problems? The CD/DVD with drivers has only Vista drivers. I tried to get XP drivers from MSI website, but during installation, it says they are not still there. I got drivers from:

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1521

They do not seem to have any SATA driver. How about chipset driver?

    Any help appreciated.
    Thank you! :)

I had the same problem with a Dell Optiplex 330. I received the
STOP 0x0000007B(0xF78DA63C,0x0000034,0X x0000000,0x0000000 error message if I booted with Windows XP. I resolved the issue by the following actions

    1. On start up (Dell logo), press F2 to enter BIOS

    2. Expand the "Drives" section

    3. Go to "SATA Operation"

    4. Change this from "RAID Auto/AHCI" to "RAID Auto/ ATA"

-EDIT - Just caught the above post since it came up while I was typing up this post. I'm going to try it as well. It looks like this setting is under the Advanced tab in the BIOS for us MS-1722 users. Switching it to disabled. Will keep up on this thread as it goes on. Installing from USB.....

--Edit 2 - Well, that worked. It's installing now using the regular XP SP1 disk. Will keep you all up to date after all the updates and then see what happens when I switch the AHCI back on, lol.

    -Old post
I have the exact same problem and you must be installing XP Pro SP1 and not SP2 or SP3 as well. I used a Knoppix Live CD to check if my drive was at fault and it comes up as /dev/sda strange but it works fine that way. SP2 cds have generic SATA drivers or something I guess.

The chipset used is the Intel® PM45 + ICH9-M according the MSIcomputers.com site and going to Intel's site shows there are two versions of that chipset, MGM45RM and MGM45WU . Both seem to point to this file that contains the word SATA in it's description http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&OSFullName=Windows* XP Home Edition&lang=eng

I'm going to try it and see what happens through slipstreaming. While I'm doing that I hear Vista Home premium and up and also Windows 7 works fine as is.

    Thank you for your messages.
It looks like finally the setup on my machine could continue.

What seems to work is in BIOS, Advanced tab, AHCI set to disabled.
Setup is formatting C: partition now...

Yep, the disabling the ACHI does work. I haven't been able to find a working XP driver for it so it's just going to have to stay disabled until I get Vista or Win7. Thanks for the heads up.

    -Edit

Just read more into AHCI, in order to use it, you must load the driver prior to installing XP, when it says do you want to load your RAID driver, that's when it's done. Or the other method is to slipstream it into your XP install driver set and re-create your bootable XP install CD.

Making an attempt today and hope all goes well. No optical drive yet so installing the OS isn't exactly easy.......

    -Edit 2

Tried slipstreaming and tried merging the drivers from the INF and it didn't work. I can't seem to find a way to rip the AHCI drivers from the install pack. Ah well, XP is going away and I'll get just dump Vista on it when Win 7 is officially out.

I still have issues, a bit strange.

I cannot instal audio driver on it, although the MSI site says the driver they provide should be for XP.

And if I turn off a computer for longer time, like around 1 hour, it cannot boot. Nothing on screen. What I have to do is take out CMOS battery, so BIOS resets. It then reports error asking for F1 in order to enter setup. It is strange, cause it can restart ok many times. It happened twice now, when I had laptop off for around 1 hour.
    -------------
    Edit:
I checked if the processor was seated properly, and it might have been the problem. I will have to try this for longer time and see what happens. 1722 boots ok now. Still audio has no working driver.

    Oddeyeball,

Thank you for the link. Audio works ok now with the driver you recommended.
As for the boot problem, it apparently was the processor not correctly seated, as I wrote before. Now the laptop works ok.

Installing programs... Good thing about XP is that one can make BartPE disc for booting from CD and have Macrium Reflect free edition for imaging of the OS partition.
Doing it right now, so not sure how it will go. I intend to make an image of a fresh install with few basic stuff I put already and then format c: drive and try to restore.

About vista, they say to have PE environment, one has to have paid license for PE 2.0, Macrium has to be full version for that.

    @oddeyeball..

Did you try switching it back on after installing xp? I am trying to install a dual-boot vista and xp system and I was wondering if disabling ahci would lead to problems with vista (I already have vista installed)

Yep, I did. It will still crash. You pretty much have to have that AHCI driver while installing the OS. Windows 7 Beta 7000 has it and Vista SP1 apparently as well. Pre-SP1 Vista does not, well at least mine didn't. The only XP I have was XP Pro SP1 and that didn't have it.

Oh.. What if you install XP and then install the drivers from MSI's site, something called Intel Storage Manager or something, supposed to be the SATA driver. But then again, I am not sure if it works with x64 XP.

That Intel Storage Matrix driver holds the files needed to get it to work however finding a way to extract the drivers so you can use them during to Windows installation wasn't easy. That setup file was meant to update Windows when it was already using AHCI, but you are suppose to get the driver installed during Windows installation. Kinda odd how that worked out.

I actually found a way to do it, the information was on Intel's site under the unattended installation method. You need to run the setup file command with this switch

    -A -A -P C:\<path>

Replace <path> with where you want to put the files, for instance C:\tempfiles is what I used. It will then dump the driver files into a directory and you can hit that F6 button during windows installation to load them from a disk, or maybe even a USB, or a slipstreamed windows installation.

I will try to use these drivers tonight and see what happens. Here I go again with another re-install, lol.

Thanks for finding all that info. Yeah, its always a reinstall frenzy with the new system, I have installed win7 x86, linux, vista business 32 and what not till now. Still havent found something final, lol. What I want is a perfect triple boot with Vista x64, WinXP x64 and some Linux. Maybe put in Win7 just for kicks lol.

I'm having pretty much the exact same problem on my GT627 that I got yesterday. It's an MS-1651 and the bios seems a bit different but i'm going to play around with some of these settings and see what I can figure out.

So far I've found that bios>advanced>configure SATA#1 as RAID (instead of the default AHCI) doesn't seem to work as it apparently goes into windows recovery mode (it's got vista pre-installed) instead of booting off the CD.

I'll play around a bit more and see if there is anything I can find. And if anyone has any advice i'd be most appreciative.

Something about going between AHCI/RAID mode and legacy mode SATA settings make it do that. You are suppose to use the RAID/AHCI drivers during the install of Windows, otherwise you will get that error. There was a trick you can do, but that is something I won't mess with. I'd rather get it done the way it is suppose to be done.

I tried to use the drivers, it sees the driver and installs it, but I still get the BSOD right when setup is starting. I give up, lol.

Thanks for trying! Well, I am running windows server 2008 and happy with it. Just that I have used vista on my old laptop for a long time and wanted to use the same on the newer one.
