    Hello everyone,

just got a gtx 580m for my msi ms 16f2-012.
I did everything according to my experience - took out the gtx 570m, cleaned it, stored it aside.
Then I put in the gtx 580m, planted the thermal pads and paste (IC diamond) and put everything together.
After I started my computer and when windows started, I saw that the graphic driver are installing NVIDIA which is something I´d expect.
However the graphics atm remain on 1024x768, the driver says I do not have any compatible NVIDIA graphic card and when I go to system manager I see that a NVIDIA chip is installed, however the driver are for a standard VGA card.

    Can anyone help me here?
I suppose its a software problem...

    Thanks
    Jakub

    OS: Win 7 x64
    The new card is - GTX 580M P/N 3MF8R (Alienware M18X I think).

Have you tried clean installing new drivers?

Yes. It says the graphics driver cannot find any compatible hardware... :(

EDIT: It might be a BIOS problem, but tbh I have not much experience in BIOS moding...

    Which drivers have you used?

And what's the "Hardware ID" of the display adapter in Device Manager?:

Try to install the latest Nvidia driver for GTX 580M:

    Drivers - GeForce

I had this problem a few years ago, and I solved it by installing the driver from
the CD that came with my computer, but I didn't change my graphics card.
In your case it's possible that the BIOS of your msi ms 16f2-012 doesn't support
the GTX 580M. Make sure your current BIOS supports Nvidia GTX 580M.

    This is what I get...
    The driver was:
    296.10-notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql
    and
    nVidia GeForce GTX 580M - A01 269.03 from DELL

    both the same result...

EDIT: for BIOS I am using the "unlocked BIOS V3.0P" which is working flawlessly...

You may have to install some modded drivers.

When I got my laptop in January, none of the older drivers that I tried worked.

Some modded drivers can be found here:

    AWESOME!
    Worked!

Beware! It´s a bit pain in the ... to set everything in the right way ;)

Now I finished the hardware part:

    16f2-012
    CPU: 2920XM
    RAM: 32Gb 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance
    GPU: GTX 580M
    HDD1: 128GB M4 Crucial SSD
    HDD2: 500GB Seagate 4GB SSD Hybrid
cpu and gpu cooled by IC Diamond and Phobya 7W/mk thermal pads 0.5mm
Notebook cooled by Antec 200 notebook cooler

    BIOS: 3.05P unlocked
using Fan control 1.04 by Pherein (very recommended!)
    Win 7 Professional x64

OC will be maybe done, if I find a reason to do so...
If anyone has some experience in OC, you are welcome to tell me what you did to your 2920xm CPU and the GTX 580M GPU...

    Nice weekend to everyone!

I payed 350USD, shipping included, so I am quite happy tbh.
My notebook should be right for Guild Wars 2 & EVE online.
As I don´t really play other games, I don´t care much about gtx 675m or better cards. IMO the 580M does its job quite well...
I got the 2920XM for 400USD so happy with that one also and the RAM cost me 250USD... both shipping included.

That sounds like good deals for me considering the usual prices for these CPU/GPU and RAM.

I know that new NVIDIA chips are coming and intel has also new stuff hitting the market but this is the moment for all the people who would like to buy the second best equipment, as there is a bunch of hardware junkies (no offense ;)) who will start getting rid of their old hardware... and the prices are falling (you can look into eBay and if you are lucky as I was... or the NBR marketplace ^^)

I suggest you get the 295.73 drivers and mod inf from laptopvideo2go - they were the best drivers performance and stability wise for my Dell 580M (in msi16f2)

    275.33's are way too old.

Those numbers are fine since I run 560m's in SLI mode and my score is around 22000, and one 580 is equal to two 560's.

No issue here, I just took the newest driver - 296.10 and did the same process with the modification of the files.
As for the file I recommend "nvdm.inf" for the gtx 580M as there is the GPU already there (in other *.inf files there are another GPUs stored).
Just insert everything the way it matches your GPU as described and it works like a charm...

350 dollars seems fair, its the same card as the 675M and it would be more for the 7970M (along with effort for modding) so at that price it's fair enough. Just a little surprised you did not just clock your 570M.

Feel free to buy two, but one 7970M is better than two 580M cards.

Looking to put a 580m card into my MSI 16f2 that had a stock 560m. However I read somewhere that the ones that initially came with 560m had some motherboard variations than those with stock 570m/580m.

Tried contacting my retailer to no avail (have yet to respond), so any information provided here will be very much appreciated.

    Good Evening,

I have an MSI GT780DXR laptop, but recently purchased a Dell GTX580m video card...
Haven't been able to get it working, despite modifying the .inf, any ideas?

    Regards,

    Jah

Turns out flashing the vBios fixed it, but now:

In my MSI GT780DXR I've recently installed a Dell GTX580m. Flashed the vBios to MSI and installed the drivers fine. Bought some quality thermal paste, applied it correctly (after lots of research and reapplications).
However, when playing the latest game I have (Wildstar), the card heads toward 75 degrees celcius then reboots the computer. After experimenting with various thermal paste applications, it can stay under for a couple of minutes with the fan at full, but always restarts.
My previous video card died playing this game...
    Thoughts or theories, anyone?
    Regards,
    Jah

75'C is kinda low for overheating. Maybe there is something else at work here...it should be able to handle at least 80'C just fine! Even 85'C would be acceptable under full load.

I really have to edit my settings on this forum so I get notifications..
After messing with several settings, including running everything on the lowest graphics, it seems it wasn't the heat, but some other problem. My laptop restarted even under 70 degrees, and has been restarting more frequently. Another forum's prevailing wisdom suggests the card is ruined, and I've ordered another card. Hopefully that'll fix it, or else it'll be new thread time!

A sudden reboot is usually down to a bad power supply.
